Chapter 8: The Truth About The Night Everything Burned

Adrian had heard countless accusations in his life.

Competitors called him ruthless.

Enemies called him arrogant.

The media called him impossible to understand.

But nothing had ever shaken him like those five words.

*It was you.*

He stared at his mother.

“What does that mean?””

She looked broken.

Not like a powerful woman hiding a secret.

Not like someone manipulating the truth.

Like someone who had carried a weight for twenty years and finally could no longer hold it.

“Mom.””

The word escaped before he could stop it.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Because it was the first time he had called her that since she walked back into his life.

“I’m sorry.””

Adrian looked around the damaged ballroom.

The stolen files.

The unconscious Thomas.

The message on the wall.

Everything felt unreal.

“No more secrets.””

His voice was firm.

“No more protecting me.””

His mother nodded slowly.

“You deserve the truth.””

Marcus moved closer.

“We need to leave.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because whoever took those files knows we’re here.””

Rachel nodded.

“He was inside the building.””

Adrian looked at the security cameras.

“Can we find him?””

The technician shook his head.

“All cameras went offline at exactly the same time.””

“Someone planned this.””

“Yes.””

Adrian looked toward the message on the wall.

“Someone who knew exactly where to hit.””

His mother looked down.

“Your grandfather trained people like that.””

Adrian turned.

“My grandfather?””

She nodded.

“People who didn’t ask questions. People who followed orders.””

“Is he still alive?””

“No.””

“Then who is doing this?””

Nobody answered.

And Adrian hated that.

He hated that everyone seemed to know pieces of his life except him.

He walked toward his mother.

“You said you protected me.””

“Yes.””

“From what?””

She looked at him.

“From knowing what happened that night.””

“The fire.””

She nodded.

Adrian waited.

Finally.

The truth.

His mother took a deep breath.

“The night Elena’s foundation burned, Daniel found documents.””

“What documents?””

“Proof that your grandfather and Charles Laurent had been using the company to hide illegal transactions.””

Adrian looked at Victoria.

She lowered her eyes.

“My father…”

“Yes,” Adrian’s mother said quietly.

“Your father and Charles were partners.””

Victoria looked devastated.

“My father never told me everything.””

Adrian looked at her.

“But you knew enough.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

Nobody spoke.

His mother continued.

“Daniel found the files and brought them to Elena because he trusted her.””

“She helped him.””

“Yes.””

“And then the fire happened.””

His mother’s face changed.

A memory.

A painful one.

“Your grandfather found out.””

Adrian’s hands tightened.

“What happened next?””

“He sent people to destroy the foundation.””

Rachel covered her mouth.

“And Elena?””

“She was inside.””

Adrian looked at Lily.

The little girl’s eyes were fixed on his mother.

She remembered.

Of course she remembered.

She had been there.

“Lily saw it.””

His mother nodded.

“She saw everything.””

The little girl looked down.

“She saw Daniel trying to save Elena.””

Adrian froze.

“Daniel was there?””

“Yes.””

Marcus spoke softly.

“He went back inside the building.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because Elena was trapped.””

“And my father?””

His mother looked away.

That hesitation frightened him.

“My father arrived.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“My father was there?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did everyone say it was an accident?””

His mother’s eyes filled with pain.

“Because your father made a deal.””

“What deal?””

“He promised your grandfather he would take the blame publicly if he let Daniel and Elena escape.””

Adrian stared.

“That makes no sense.””

“It does when you understand your father.””

She looked at him.

“Your father knew he couldn’t defeat him.””

“So he sacrificed himself.””

“Yes.””

Adrian remembered the years after.

His father becoming colder.

Harder.

More distant.

Everyone had blamed him.

Even Adrian.

He had thought his father chose the company over them.

Maybe he had chosen them over himself.

“What happened to Daniel?””

Marcus answered.

“Your grandfather discovered he survived.””

“And?””

“He sent people after him.””

Adrian looked at Lily.

“And Elena?””

“She disappeared to protect him.””

Adrian shook his head.

“But Elena said my father saved her.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did she let everyone believe he destroyed her?””

His mother looked at the floor.

“Because your father asked her to.””

Adrian froze.

“Why?””

“Because if people believed Elena hated him, nobody would search for her.””

The room became silent.

His entire understanding of his family had reversed.

The villains.

The heroes.

The victims.

Everything was different.

Then Adrian noticed something.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at him.

“Why did Lily warn me tonight?””

Marcus looked at the little girl.

“Because someone was going to repeat history.””

Adrian frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel answered.

“Three days ago, Lily found evidence.””

“Where?””

“In the old Vale archive.””

Adrian looked at her.

“The archive my father hid.””

“Yes.””

“What evidence?””

Rachel looked nervous.

“The person behind everything was preparing to destroy the last remaining proof.””

Adrian looked around.

“The files that were stolen tonight.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

“And the champagne?””

Nobody answered.

Adrian looked at Victoria.

Her face changed.

“Victoria.””

She swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t?””

“No.””

“Then why did Lily accuse the woman in red?””

Victoria looked at the little girl.

And Lily immediately looked away.

Adrian noticed.

“You know something.””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

“Then why is she afraid of you?””

The question hit hard.

Victoria didn’t answer.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Because Lily remembers.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Remembers what?””

Marcus looked at Victoria.

“The night Elena disappeared.””

Victoria’s face went pale.

Adrian slowly turned.

“What did you do?””

Victoria whispered:

“Nothing.””

But nobody believed her.

Not anymore.

“I was there,” she admitted.

Adrian felt his stomach drop.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Victoria closed her eyes.

“My father brought me.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted me to see what happened when people challenged powerful families.””

A cold silence followed.

Adrian stared.

“You were a child.””

“I know.””

“And you watched?””

Tears appeared in her eyes.

“Yes.””

Lily suddenly moved.

She grabbed Adrian’s hand.

Then she opened her notebook.

She wrote one sentence.

*She tried to help my mother.*

Adrian stared.

Everyone looked shocked.

Victoria looked at Lily.

“You remember?””

The little girl nodded.

Victoria covered her mouth.

A painful expression crossed her face.

“I was fifteen.””

Adrian looked at her.

“What happened?””

Victoria whispered.

“I saw my father’s men lock the doors.””

Everyone froze.

“Lock the doors?””

Victoria nodded.

“They wanted the fire to look like an accident.””

Adrian’s voice became quiet.

“And you?””

“I tried to stop them.””

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Victoria looked at him.

“Because my father threatened my little brother.””

Silence.

Adrian suddenly understood.

Everyone in this story had been trapped.

Everyone had been protecting someone.

Everyone had been afraid.

But fear did not erase the damage.

“What happened after?””

Victoria wiped her tears.

“I helped Daniel get Elena out.””

Adrian looked at Marcus.

Marcus nodded.

“She did.””

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you let me hate her?””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“Because your father told me the truth could only come out when you were strong enough to handle it.””

Adrian laughed quietly.

“Everyone decided what I could handle.””

Nobody spoke.

Then the doors opened.

A security guard rushed inside.

“Mr. Vale!””

Everyone turned.

“What happened?””

The guard looked terrified.

“We found Mr. Thomas.””

Adrian moved immediately.

“Is he alive?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

The guard hesitated.

“In the parking garage.””

Adrian frowned.

“Then why do you look scared?””

The guard swallowed.

“Because he wasn’t alone.””

A cold feeling moved through Adrian.

“Who was with him?””

The guard looked at the floor.

“Your father.””

Nobody moved.

Adrian stared.

“My father is dead.””

The guard shook his head.

“No, sir.””

A pause.

“He’s alive.””

Adrian’s heart stopped.

Then the guard added:

“And he’s asking to speak with you.””

Adrian looked toward the exit.

After twenty years of believing his father was gone…

The man who started everything was waiting downstairs.

And Adrian knew one thing.

May you like

Whatever truth remained buried…

His father was the only person who could finally reveal it.
