Chapter 4: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

For five years, Adrian Vale had believed he knew every secret worth knowing.

He knew the numbers behind his companies.

He knew the names of every executive who reported to him.

He knew which investors trusted him and which ones smiled while waiting for him to fail.

But standing in the doorway of his own engagement gala, staring at a man who was supposed to be dead, Adrian realized he had known almost nothing.

The figure stepped out of the shadows.

The ballroom lights caught his face.

Older.

Thinner.

A scar running across his left cheek.

But unmistakable.

Adrian stopped breathing.

“Marcus?””

The man didn’t smile.

He only looked at him with tired eyes.

“Hello, Adrian.””

The room exploded with whispers.

Guests lifted their phones.

Security moved forward.

But Adrian raised his hand.

“No one touches him.””

The security team stopped.

Because Adrian’s voice wasn’t angry.

It was shocked.

Marcus Vale.

His father’s former chief financial officer.

The man who had managed the family empire before disappearing seven years earlier.

The man whose car had been found abandoned near a bridge.

The man whose disappearance had been ruled an accident.

The man Adrian’s father had called “a traitor” before he vanished.

“You’re alive,” Adrian whispered.

Marcus looked at him.

“Apparently.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“Adrian, don’t listen to him.””

Marcus turned his eyes toward her.

A bitter expression crossed his face.

“Still protecting the Laurents?””

Victoria’s face hardened.

“Still pretending you’re the victim?””

The room became silent.

Adrian looked between them.

“You know each other.””

Neither answered.

That was all the confirmation he needed.

“Everyone leave,” Adrian ordered.

The guests hesitated.

A billionaire’s engagement party had transformed into a crime scene, and nobody wanted to miss the ending.

Adrian looked toward security.

“Now.””

Within minutes, the ballroom emptied.

The music stopped.

The cameras disappeared.

Only a small group remained.

Adrian.

Victoria.

Marcus.

Rachel.

Lily.

And the truth waiting between them.

Adrian walked toward Marcus.

“I watched your funeral.””

Marcus looked down.

“I know.””

“You know?””

“I was there.””

The words hit harder than expected.

Adrian stared.

“You were there?””

Marcus nodded.

“From across the street.””

“Why?””

Marcus looked toward Victoria.

“Because I needed to know who would come.””

Adrian followed his gaze.

Victoria’s expression was unreadable.

“And?””

Marcus’s voice became quiet.

“She didn’t.””

Victoria crossed her arms.

“That proves nothing.””

Marcus laughed softly.

A tired, painful laugh.

“You always were good at acting innocent.””

Adrian stepped between them.

“Enough.””

He looked at Marcus.

“I need answers.””

Marcus nodded.

“You deserve them.””

He reached into his coat and pulled out a folder.

The same folder Adrian had seen from the doorway.

The name on the front was written in black ink.

*ELENA CARTER.*

Adrian stared at it.

“Why do you have her files?””

Marcus looked at Lily.

“Because I promised her I would protect her daughter.””

Lily immediately moved closer to him.

Adrian noticed.

The girl trusted him.

That mattered.

“When did you meet Elena?””

Marcus opened the folder.

“Seven years ago.””

He removed a photograph.

A woman stood beside a small building surrounded by children.

Elena.

She was smiling.

Happy.

Alive.

Adrian looked at the picture.

“She built that foundation.””

“Yes.””

“And my company bought the land.””

Marcus nodded.

“Your father forced the sale.””

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

The words were heavy.

“Your father and Charles Laurent.””

Victoria looked away.

Adrian noticed.

“Victoria.””

She didn’t respond.

“Look at me.””

Slowly, she did.

“How much did you know?””

Her silence lasted too long.

Marcus answered for her.

“Everything.””

Adrian felt something inside him break.

“No.””

Marcus’s expression softened.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

Adrian stepped back.

“You’re saying she knew?””

Marcus looked at Victoria.

“She knew before she met you.””

The room went completely still.

Adrian turned toward Victoria.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria’s eyes filled with anger.

“Don’t do this.””

“Do what?””

“Look at me like I’m a monster.””

Adrian stared.

“I don’t know what to look at you like anymore.””

The sentence hurt her.

For a second, the confidence disappeared.

Then she became defensive.

“My father made decisions. I was not responsible for everything he did.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You were there the night Elena died.””

Lily covered her mouth.

Even though she couldn’t speak, her reaction was loud enough.

Adrian looked at Marcus.

“Died?””

Everyone froze.

Adrian slowly turned.

“Everyone told me the fire killed her.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“No.””

A cold silence followed.

“No?””

Marcus shook his head.

“Elena survived.””

Adrian stared.

“Then where is she?””

Marcus looked at Lily.

The little girl lowered her eyes.

“She was taken.””

Adrian’s voice became sharper.

“Taken by who?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

That frightened Adrian more than the answer would have.

“Who?””

Marcus looked toward the folder.

“Someone who wanted the world to believe she was gone.””

Adrian opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Medical records.

Police reports.

And one picture that made his hands freeze.

A hospital room.

Elena Carter lying in bed.

Alive.

The date was six years earlier.

Six months after the fire.

Adrian looked at Marcus.

“How did you get this?””

Marcus’s eyes darkened.

“Because I was the one who helped her escape.””

Victoria suddenly moved.

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at her.

Her voice was no longer calm.

No longer controlled.

“Stop telling him things you don’t understand.””

Adrian slowly turned.

“What don’t I understand?””

Victoria’s eyes moved between them.

“You think this is simple?””

“No.””

Adrian held up the photograph.

“I think my entire life has been a lie.””

Victoria stepped closer.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“Then tell me.””

She stopped.

“Tell me what happened that night.””

Nothing.

Again.

Silence.

Adrian shook his head.

“That’s what I thought.””

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

“Then you need to understand one thing.””

She looked at Lily.

The little girl immediately stepped back.

Adrian noticed.

“Don’t look at her.””

Victoria ignored him.

“Elena Carter wasn’t the person you think she was.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“There it is.””

Adrian frowned.

“What?””

“The story she always tells.””

Victoria looked at Marcus.

“Because it’s true.””

Adrian looked between them.

“What did Elena do?””

Marcus hesitated.

And that hesitation confused him.

Because Marcus had been accusing Victoria.

But now he looked uncomfortable.

Almost afraid.

Adrian noticed.

“You know something else.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

“Marcus.””

The older man looked at him.

“There’s something you need to know before you open the rest of those files.””

“What?””

Marcus looked at Lily.

The girl was holding the edge of Adrian’s jacket.

“She wasn’t the only child Elena saved.””

Adrian frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus reached into the folder and pulled out another document.

A birth certificate.

He handed it to Adrian.

Adrian looked down.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

The name at the top.

The name of the child.

The name he had never expected.

His hands went cold.

Because it wasn’t Lily Carter’s name.

It was another name.

A name connected to his own family.

Marcus whispered:

“Adrian, there is one more person who knows what happened that night.””

The lights above them suddenly flickered.

Then every screen in the ballroom turned on.

A video began playing.

A woman appeared.

Older.

Weak.

But alive.

Elena Carter.

And her first words froze everyone in the room.

“Adrian Vale…”

She looked directly into the camera.

“Your father didn’t destroy my life.””

A pause.

Then:

“He saved it.””

Adrian stared at the screen.

And then Elena said the words that changed everything.

“The person you should fear was never Charles Laurent.””

The video glitched.

The screen went black.

And one final message appeared:

*LOOK INSIDE YOUR OWN FAMILY.*
