Chapter 7: The Person Behind The Betrayal
Adrian had spent his entire life believing that the people closest to him were the safest people in the world.
His father.
His mother.
His fiancée.
His family.
But now, standing in the empty ballroom with secrets falling apart around him, he understood something terrifying.
The people closest to you were also the ones who knew exactly where to hurt you.
The figure stepped into the light.
Adrian stared.
“No…”
The man stopped.
His face was familiar.
Too familiar.
Because Adrian had seen him thousands of times.
In photographs.
In company meetings.
At family events.
The person standing before him was the last person Adrian expected.
“Uncle Thomas.””
Thomas Vale looked older than Adrian remembered.
His silver hair was messy.
His expensive suit was wrinkled.
And for the first time, the man who had always seemed untouchable looked afraid.
“Adrian.””
His voice was quiet.
Almost gentle.
But Adrian didn’t move.
“You were listening.””
Thomas looked around the room.
“I needed to know what you found.””
“What I found?””
Adrian laughed once.
A bitter sound.
“You mean what you spent years hiding?””
Thomas looked away.
That was enough.
Adrian stepped forward.
“How long?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
“How long did you know?””
“Adrian…”
“How long did you know Daniel was alive?””
Silence.
Thomas lowered his head.
“Years.””
The answer landed like a punch.
Adrian looked at Victoria.
Then Marcus.
Then his mother.
Then back at Thomas.
“My entire family knew.””
Nobody spoke.
“And I was the only person who didn’t?””
His mother took a step forward.
“Adrian…”
He looked at her.
The woman he had mourned.
The woman he had imagined beside him during every major moment of his life.
“I spent twenty years thinking you were gone.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You don’t know.””
The room became painfully quiet.
“I visited your grave.””
His mother looked down.
“I know.””
“I talked to a stone.””
Tears appeared in her eyes.
“Adrian…”
“And you were alive.””
She closed her eyes.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He looked around.
“Everyone keeps saying they protected me.””
His voice became sharper.
“But nobody protected me from the truth.””
Nobody answered.
Because he was right.
Thomas finally spoke.
“Your mother didn’t betray you.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Then who did?””
Thomas hesitated.
That hesitation made Adrian’s stomach tighten.
“You know.””
Thomas looked toward Victoria.
Then toward Adrian’s mother.
“I know who started everything.””
“Who?””
The old man’s expression changed.
Pain.
Regret.
Fear.
“Your grandfather.””
Adrian froze.
“My grandfather died before I was born.””
“Yes.””
“So how could he?””
Thomas walked slowly toward the table.
“He didn’t start it alone.””
He placed a folder down.
“Your grandfather built the foundation of the Vale empire.””
Adrian stared.
“He was ruthless.””
Thomas continued.
“He believed families were businesses. Children were investments. Love was a weakness.””
Adrian’s mother looked away.
“And when he discovered Daniel existed…”
Adrian interrupted.
“Why did that matter?””
Thomas looked at him.
“Because Daniel was not just another son.””
The room went silent.
Adrian frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Old.
Yellowed.
Medical records.
Adrian picked them up.
Then stopped.
His eyes moved across the page.
A DNA report.
A birth record.
A name.
He looked confused.
“What is this?””
Thomas’s voice was quiet.
“Daniel wasn’t your father’s only secret.””
Adrian stared.
“What are you saying?””
Thomas looked at Lily.
Then at Adrian.
“Daniel was the first child.””
Adrian felt the room shift.
“And me?””
Thomas swallowed.
“You were the second.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does.””
“No.””
Adrian shook his head.
“No, because Daniel and I are brothers.””
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why are you saying he was the first child like I wasn’t?””
Thomas looked at him.
“Because your grandfather planned to erase Daniel from the family.””
Adrian stared.
“And my father let him?””
“No.””
Thomas’s answer came immediately.
“Your father fought him.””
A memory flashed.
His father’s anger.
His distance.
His obsession with protecting the family name.
Adrian had always assumed his father wanted power.
But maybe he had been fighting a war nobody knew existed.
“What happened?””
Thomas sighed.
“Your grandfather discovered Daniel knew about illegal activities inside the company.””
Adrian looked at the files.
“What activities?””
“Money laundering. Fraud. Illegal acquisitions.””
Rachel quietly spoke.
“The land where Elena’s foundation stood.””
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
Adrian looked at the documents.
His hands tightened.
“So Daniel found evidence.””
“Yes.””
“And my grandfather tried to silence him.””
“Yes.””
“And Elena helped him.””
“Yes.””
Adrian looked at his mother.
“Then why did everyone think she was involved?””
His mother finally spoke.
“Because I allowed them to.””
Adrian stared.
“What?””
She walked closer.
“I knew they would come after you.””
Her voice trembled.
“After Daniel disappeared, they needed someone else to blame.””
“Who?””
“My father.””
Adrian froze.
His mother looked down.
“Your grandfather.””
The words were quiet.
But devastating.
“My own father was the person who ordered everything.””
Nobody moved.
Adrian felt anger rising.
Not toward the dead man.
Toward everyone who had carried this secret.
“Then why hide me from the truth?””
His mother cried silently.
“Because your grandfather had people everywhere.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“He threatened you.””
The room became still.
Adrian looked at her.
“What?””
“He told me if I exposed him, you would disappear too.””
A cold feeling moved through Adrian.
“How old was I?””
“Eight.””
The same age Daniel disappeared.
His mother continued.
“I made a choice.””
“You chose to leave me.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I chose to make you believe I was gone so they would stop looking.””
Adrian looked away.
He wanted to be angry.
He wanted to forgive.
But he didn’t know which one he was supposed to feel.
Then Thomas spoke.
“There’s something else.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
Of course.
Another secret.
Another hidden truth.
“What now?””
Thomas looked toward Victoria.
“She wasn’t just investigating your family.””
Victoria stiffened.
Adrian turned.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas continued.
“Victoria was sent by her father.””
Adrian looked at Victoria.
“You knew.””
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“To find information.””
“Yes.””
“About Daniel?””
“Yes.””
His chest tightened.
“So our entire relationship…”
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
“At first.””
Adrian looked at her.
“At first?””
She stepped closer.
“I was supposed to gather information about your family.””
“Then what?””
“Then I met you.””
He didn’t respond.
“I stopped.””
“Did you?””
Victoria looked hurt.
“Yes.””
Adrian shook his head.
“Then why did you hide everything?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked at his mother.
Then Thomas.
“Of what my father would do if he knew I changed sides.””
Before Adrian could answer, the lights suddenly went out.
Complete darkness.
A second later, an alarm sounded.
Everyone froze.
Marcus moved immediately.
“Everyone down!””
Glass shattered somewhere near the entrance.
Lily screamed silently and grabbed Adrian’s hand.
Then emergency lights flashed red.
And Adrian saw something terrifying.
The folder containing all the evidence was gone.
Thomas was on the floor.
Unconscious.
And written on the wall behind him was a message in black ink.
*YOU FOUND THE PAST. NOW LOSE THE FUTURE.*
Adrian looked around.
Someone had escaped.
Someone who knew every secret.
Someone who had been close enough to take everything.
Then his phone vibrated.
A message.
From an unknown number.
Only one sentence.
*Ask your mother who she really protected that night.*
Adrian looked at his mother.
She had gone pale.
Because she knew exactly what the message meant.
And then she whispered the words Adrian never expected to hear:
“Adrian…”
A tear rolled down her face.
“The person I protected wasn’t Daniel.””
May you like
A pause.
“It was you.””
