The Song That Found Him / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13: The Choice He Refused To Make

For a moment, nobody moved.

The rain fell between them like a curtain.

Bear stared at Victor.

Then at Eli.

Then at Evan.

Two sons.

Two lives.

Two children who had already lost too much.

And one man standing in front of him trying to make him choose.

Bear slowly shook his head.

“Bear: No.””

Victor’s smile faded slightly.

“Victor: Excuse me?””

Bear stepped forward.

“Bear: I said no.””

His voice carried through the storm.

“Bear: You don’t get to put a knife in someone’s hand and call it a choice.””

Victor studied him.

“Victor: Still pretending you’re different?””

Bear’s eyes hardened.

“Bear: I am different.””

A pause.

“Bear: Because I’m not you.””

The words hit harder than any punch.

Victor’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Something colder.

Disappointment.

“Victor: You think love makes you better?””

Bear looked at his sons.

“Bear: No.””

He looked back.

“Bear: The fact that I know what it feels like to lose someone does.””

Eli stared at him.

Evan stared too.

Because neither boy had ever heard someone choose them without hesitation.

Nadia covered her mouth.

She had spent twenty years believing she was protecting her children.

But now she watched Bear do something she never thought possible.

He refused to sacrifice either one.

Victor stepped closer.

“Victor: You don’t understand the situation.””

Bear laughed quietly.

“Bear: That’s what everyone keeps telling me.””

He looked around.

“At some point, all of you forgot something.””

Victor frowned.

“What?””

Bear pointed toward Eli and Evan.

“They’re not pieces on a board.””

The rain continued.

“They’re not evidence.””

“They’re not weapons.””

“They’re my sons.””

The silence afterward was different.

Not empty.

Powerful.

Eli looked down.

Evan looked away.

Both boys trying not to show what those words meant.

Victor shook his head.

“Victor: You always were sentimental.””

Bear’s expression didn’t change.

“Bear: And you always were afraid of it.””

Victor’s jaw tightened.

A small reaction.

But everyone noticed.

Nadia stepped beside Bear.

“Victor: It ends tonight.””

Victor looked at her.

“You still think you have a say?””

Nadia held up the metal drive.

“Yes.””

Victor’s eyes locked onto it.

“There it is.””

Bear noticed.

“Bear: That’s what you want.””

Victor smiled.

“Victor: More than anything.””

Bear looked at Nadia.

“What’s on it?””

She hesitated.

Then answered.

“Everything.””

A pause.

“Victor’s operation.””

The words hung there.

Darius stepped forward.

“Darius: The people he worked with.””

Simone nodded.

“The names. The payments. The records.””

Victor looked at Darius.

“You really decided to betray me?””

Darius looked tired.

“No.””

He glanced at Bear.

“I decided to stop helping you.””

Victor laughed.

“You think you’re a hero now?””

Darius shook his head.

“No.””

A pause.

“I know exactly what I am.””

He looked at the ground.

“Someone who waited too long.””

Bear understood.

Everyone here carried guilt.

Everyone had failed Nadia somehow.

But tonight was about fixing what they could.

Victor suddenly reached inside his coat.

Bear reacted instantly.

“Bear: Don’t.””

But Victor wasn’t reaching for a weapon.

He pulled out a phone.

He pressed one button.

A second later, headlights appeared in the distance.

More vehicles.

More people.

Evan looked around.

“How many are there?””

Darius’s face went pale.

“Too many.””

Victor smiled.

“Victor: You thought this was a meeting.””

He looked at Bear.

“It was a collection.””

Bear moved closer to Eli and Evan.

Protecting both.

Nadia whispered:

“Bear, we need to get them out.””

Bear nodded.

But before they moved, Evan spoke.

“Evan: Wait.””

Everyone looked at him.

The young man stared at Victor.

“You said one of us had to choose.””

Victor smiled.

“Yes.””

Evan stepped forward.

Bear immediately grabbed his arm.

“Bear: No.””

Evan looked at him.

For the first time, Bear saw himself in him.

The stubbornness.

The anger.

The need to understand.

“Evan: I spent my whole life wondering why I was left behind.””

His eyes moved to Nadia.

“Evan: I thought nobody wanted me.””

Nadia’s face broke.

“Evan: I’m not running anymore.””

Bear tightened his grip.

“Bear: You don’t have to prove anything.””

Evan looked at him.

“I know.””

A pause.

“I’m doing it because I want to.””

Before Bear could respond, Evan turned toward Victor.

“Evan: You’re wrong about one thing.””

Victor raised an eyebrow.

“What?””

Evan looked at Eli.

Then Bear.

Then Nadia.

“You think families break when they’re hurt.””

He shook his head.

“They break when people stop choosing each other.””

Victor said nothing.

Because for once, he had no answer.

Then the sound of approaching footsteps filled the road.

They were surrounded.

Bear looked at Nadia.

She looked back.

No words.

Just understanding.

Twenty years apart.

One moment together.

Bear grabbed Eli’s hand.

Then reached for Evan’s shoulder.

“Bear: Nobody chooses.””

He looked at Victor.

“Bear: We all leave.””

Victor smiled.

“Victor: Let’s see.””

The first man stepped out of the darkness.

Then another.

Then another.

Bear lowered his stance.

May you like

The storm raged.

And for the first time in twenty years, he wasn’t fighting alone.
