Chapter 8: The Woman Behind The Window
Bear couldn’t move.
He had imagined this moment thousands of times.
In his dreams.
In his anger.
In the long nights when he sat alone wondering if Nadia remembered him.
But never like this.
Never with her standing behind a window.
Never with proof.
The second-floor shadow disappeared.
Bear stepped forward.
“Bear: Nadia?””
His voice was barely above a whisper.
The building gave no answer.
Eli climbed off the motorcycle.
“Eli: Mom?””
That changed everything.
The shadow returned.
The curtain moved.
And Bear saw her.
Older.
Different.
But the same.
The same eyes.
The same expression.
The same woman who had once held his hand and promised forever.
Nadia.
Bear forgot how to breathe.
Twenty years of pain collapsed into one second.
“Bear: Nadia…”
The door of the abandoned building opened.
Slowly.
She stepped outside.
Rain touched her face.
She looked at him.
And tears appeared instantly.
Neither of them moved.
Because sometimes seeing someone again after losing them is harder than losing them the first time.
Bear wanted to run.
He wanted to hold her.
He wanted to scream.
Instead, he stood frozen.
Nadia looked at Eli.
Her expression broke.
“Eli: Mom.””
The boy ran.
Nadia dropped to her knees and caught him.
She held him like she had been afraid she would never touch him again.
Bear watched.
Silent.
Because that was the moment he understood.
She was real.
The woman he buried in his heart was alive.
After a few seconds, Nadia looked up.
Her eyes met Bear’s.
“Bear: Why?””
One word.
Twenty years of questions behind it.
Nadia stood slowly.
The rain soaked her clothes.
“Bear…”
Her voice shook.
He shook his head.
“No.””
He looked away.
“Bear: Don’t say my name like nothing happened.””
Pain crossed her face.
“Bear: You let me believe you were gone.””
Nadia closed her eyes.
“I know.””
“Bear: You let me hate myself.””
“I know.””
“Bear: You let me think I wasn’t worth staying for.””
That broke her.
A tear mixed with the rain.
“Bear: Why?””
For a long moment, Nadia said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“Because I knew someone would kill you if I came back.””
The anger in Bear’s face weakened.
Not gone.
But shaken.
“Bear: Who?””
Nadia looked past him.
At the vehicles.
At Darius.
At Simone.
Her expression changed.
Fear.
“Bear: Nadia?””
She looked at him.
“Bear: Who?””
Nadia swallowed.
“Darius.””
Everyone froze.
Bear slowly turned.
Darius stood near the SUV.
His face was unreadable.
“Bear: Him?””
Nadia nodded.
“Bear: You said he helped you.””
Nadia looked at Darius.
“Bear: You said he protected Eli.””
Her voice broke.
“Bear: What is going on?””
Nadia looked at Eli.
Then back at Bear.
“Darius protected Eli.””
A pause.
“But he was never the person we were hiding from.””
Bear frowned.
“Bear: Then who?””
Nadia looked terrified.
Before she could answer, the building lights suddenly flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then went out.
Everyone became alert.
Darius immediately moved.
Not toward them.
Toward the road.
“Darius: We need to leave.””
Bear noticed.
“Bear: Why?””
Darius looked toward the darkness.
“Darius: Because they found us.””
A low rumble came from the road.
Multiple engines.
Not one.
Not two.
Several.
Nadia grabbed Eli.
Bear stepped in front of them.
The old instinct returned.
Protect.
The headlights appeared through the rain.
A line of vehicles approaching.
Bear looked at Nadia.
“Bear: Who are they?””
Nadia’s face went pale.
“Bear: Tell me.””
She whispered the answer.
“Those are the people who made me disappear.””
The first vehicle stopped.
A door opened.
A man stepped out.
Older.
Calm.
Confident.
He didn’t look at Bear.
He looked at Nadia.
And smiled.
“Man: Twenty years.””
Nadia held Eli tighter.
The man continued.
“Man: I was wondering how long it would take you to bring him back.””
Bear stared.
“Bear: Who are you?””
The man finally looked at him.
May you like
And smiled.
“Man: I’m the reason your wife never came home.””
