Chapter 9: The Man Who Stole Twenty Years
The rain became heavier.
But Bear barely noticed.
The man standing in front of him looked ordinary.
That was the most dangerous thing about him.
No anger.
No shouting.
No weapon in his hand.
Just a calm expression.
Like he had been waiting for this exact moment.
Bear stepped forward.
“Bear: Name.””
The man smiled.
“Man: You still give orders.””
Bear’s eyes hardened.
“Bear: Name.””
A pause.
Then:
“Man: Victor Hale.””
Nadia’s face changed.
Bear noticed.
“Bear: You know him.””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Bear looked back at Victor.
“Bear: What did you do?””
Victor glanced at Nadia.
“Victor: She never told you?””
Bear turned.
“Nadia.””
She looked at the ground.
“Bear: Tell me.””
Nadia took a breath.
“Bear, Victor was involved in—”
Victor interrupted.
“Victor: In her old life.””
The words made Bear’s attention snap back.
“Bear: Old life?””
Victor smiled.
“Victor: You thought Nadia was just a woman who played piano and loved motorcycles.””
Bear said nothing.
“Victor: She was much more than that.””
Nadia’s face tightened.
“Victor: She knew things.””
Bear looked at her.
“Bear: What things?””
Victor answered.
“Victor: Things powerful people would kill for.””
The storm surrounded them.
Every answer created more questions.
Bear hated it.
“Bear: And because of that, you took her?””
Victor shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at Nadia.
“She chose to disappear.””
Bear’s eyes narrowed.
“Bear: Explain.””
Victor stepped closer.
“Victor: Nadia discovered something she shouldn’t have.””
Nadia interrupted.
“Enough.””
Victor ignored her.
“Victor: She discovered that people close to her were not who they claimed to be.””
Bear looked at Darius.
Then Simone.
Then Nadia.
Everyone carried secrets.
“Bear: Including me?””
Nadia’s face softened.
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
“Bear: Then who?””
Victor smiled.
“Victor: That’s the question, isn’t it?””
Bear stepped closer.
“Bear: I’m tired of questions.””
Victor looked at him.
“Victor: You should be.””
Then he looked at Eli.
The boy immediately moved closer to Bear.
Victor noticed.
“Victor: He’s the reason this started.””
Bear’s expression changed.
“Bear: Don’t look at him.””
Victor continued.
“Nadia found out Eli wasn’t just a child.””
Nadia’s voice became sharp.
“Victor.””
“Victor: He was proof.””
Bear froze.
“Bear: Proof of what?””
Nobody answered.
Victor looked satisfied.
Because he knew he had just opened the door.
“Bear: What does that mean?””
Nadia grabbed Bear’s arm.
“Bear: Look at me.””
He did.
Her eyes were full of fear.
Not for herself.
For him.
“Bear: Whatever he says, don’t believe him.””
Victor laughed quietly.
“Victor: Still protecting him.””
Nadia stepped forward.
“Victor: You don’t get to rewrite this.””
Victor looked at her.
“Victor: I don’t have to.””
He pointed toward Eli.
“The truth already exists.””
Bear looked at the boy.
Eli looked terrified.
Bear lowered his voice.
“Bear: Eli.””
The boy looked up.
“Bear: What haven’t they told me?””
Eli’s eyes filled with tears.
“I don’t know.””
And Bear believed him.
Because the child looked just as lost as he felt.
A sudden movement came from behind Victor.
Several people stepped out of the vehicles.
Surrounding them.
Bear immediately shifted.
Protecting Nadia and Eli.
Victor watched.
“Victor: There it is.””
Bear looked at him.
“Bear: What?””
Victor smiled.
“The reason Nadia loved you.””
A pause.
“You always protect people before you protect yourself.””
Bear stared.
Victor turned toward the road.
“Victor: But tonight, that’s going to get you killed.””
The group began moving closer.
Darius stepped forward.
“Darius: Victor.””
Victor looked at him.
“Victor: You disappointed me.””
Darius shook his head.
“You hurt enough people.””
Victor laughed.
“Victor: And you still think you’re the hero.””
Bear looked between them.
“Bear: Someone explain what is happening.””
Nadia grabbed his hand.
A small gesture.
The first time in twenty years.
Bear looked down at their hands.
Then back at her.
She whispered:
“Bear, I need you to trust me.””
His eyes filled.
“Bear: I spent twenty years trying to understand why you left.””
She looked at him.
“Bear: I don’t know if I can trust anything anymore.””
Nadia nodded.
“I know.””
A tear slipped down her face.
“But trust this.””
She squeezed his hand.
“I never left you.””
Before Bear could answer, Victor raised his hand.
The people around him stopped.
Then Victor spoke.
“Victor: You want the truth?””
He looked at Bear.
“Victor: Fine.””
A smile.
“But you’re going to hear it from the person who started all of this.””
Everyone turned.
Victor looked behind Bear.
Bear slowly followed his gaze.
And saw Simone standing there.
Holding another old photograph.
Her hands were shaking.
Victor smiled.
“Victor: Tell him what Nadia never could.””
Simone looked at Bear.
May you like
And whispered:
“Your son was never supposed to survive.””
