Chapter 5: Nadia’s Last Words
The gas station lights returned three seconds later.
Three seconds.
That was all.
But it was enough.
Enough for Bear to know someone was watching.
Enough for him to know this wasn’t just about the past.
This was happening now.
He looked at the phone sitting on the wet concrete.
Nobody moved toward it.
Nobody claimed it.
That made it worse.
Bear slowly picked it up.
The screen was cracked.
No number.
No name.
Only the message.
DON’T OPEN THE LETTER.
He looked around the gas station.
At Darius.
At Simone.
At the vehicles surrounding them.
Then at Eli.
“Bear: Did you know about this?””
Eli shook his head quickly.
“Eli: No.””
Bear believed him.
The boy was scared.
Not pretending.
Scared.
Darius watched Bear carefully.
“Darius: You should listen.””
Bear turned.
“Bear: You’re giving me advice now?””
Darius didn’t react.
“Darius: Nadia always said your biggest weakness was that you needed answers.””
Bear stepped closer.
“Bear: And your biggest mistake is thinking that’s a weakness.””
For the first time, Darius looked uncertain.
Bear held up the envelope.
“Bear: Twenty years ago, I lost my wife.””
His voice lowered.
“Bear: Tonight, I found out I had a son.””
Eli looked up.
Bear paused.
He hadn’t meant to say it.
Not yet.
But hearing the words out loud changed something.
A son.
The possibility.
The fear.
The hope.
All mixed together.
“Bear: Nobody takes him from me.””
Simone looked at him.
Her eyes softened.
“Simone: You sound just like her.””
Bear looked away.
“Bear: Don’t compare me to Nadia.””
Simone shook her head.
“Simone: You don’t understand.””
She stepped closer.
“Simone: She spent years believing you were the only person who could protect him.””
Bear looked at the envelope.
“Bear: Then why didn’t she come to me?””
Simone’s face fell.
“Simone: Because she couldn’t.””
Again.
That word.
Couldn’t.
Bear hated it.
Because it left room for a thousand possibilities.
“Bear: Everyone keeps saying that.””
He looked at Darius.
“Bear: What happened?””
Darius remained silent.
Bear’s patience disappeared.
He grabbed Darius by the front of his coat and pushed him against the side of the SUV.
Eli flinched.
Simone stepped forward.
“Simone: Bear!””
But Bear didn’t let go.
“Bear: Twenty years.””
Rain ran down Darius’s face.
“Bear: Twenty years I thought she chose to leave me.””
Darius looked directly into his eyes.
“Darius: She chose to save you.””
Bear froze.
The grip loosened.
“Bear: What?””
Darius spoke quietly.
“Darius: Nadia found out people were looking for her. For Eli. For you.””
Bear stared.
“Bear: Me?””
Darius nodded.
“Darius: You weren’t just her husband.””
A pause.
“You were her hiding place.””
The words hit.
Bear released him.
Darius straightened his coat.
“Darius: She knew if they found you, they would use you to get to her.””
Bear looked at Eli.
The boy was staring at the ground.
“Bear: He knew?””
Simone answered.
“Simone: Eli knew enough.””
Bear’s face tightened.
“Bear: He’s eight.””
Simone looked away.
“Simone: Nadia did everything she could.””
The statement bothered him.
Because it sounded like a goodbye.
Bear looked at the envelope.
His thumb traced his name.
“Bear: If she wanted me to have this…”
He looked at Darius.
“Bear: Why are you trying to stop me?””
Darius didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Darius: Because once you read it, you won’t be able to pretend your old life exists anymore.””
Bear stared.
“Bear: It doesn’t.””
A long silence.
Then he opened the envelope.
Inside was one folded piece of paper.
Only one page.
His hands shook.
Not from fear.
From seeing her handwriting.
The first line was enough to break him.
*Bear, if you are reading this, then our son found you.*
His breathing stopped.
Our son.
Eli looked at him.
Bear couldn’t speak.
He continued reading silently.
*I know you’re angry. I know you think I abandoned you. I need you to understand one thing before anything else. I never stopped loving you.*
Bear closed his eyes.
For one second, he was no longer standing at a gas station.
He was just a man reading words from the woman he lost.
Then he reached the final paragraph.
And his expression changed.
The pain disappeared.
Replaced by confusion.
Then shock.
Because Nadia’s final words weren’t about where she had been.
They weren’t about why she left.
They were about someone else.
Someone Bear had never heard of.
The letter ended with one sentence.
*Protect Eli from the person who has been protecting him.*
Bear slowly lowered the paper.
Everyone watched him.
Simone looked nervous.
Darius looked afraid.
Bear looked between them.
“Bear: Who is she talking about?””
Nobody answered.
Then Eli pointed behind Bear.
His voice barely came out.
“Eli: She meant her.””
Bear turned.
Slowly.
May you like
And saw Simone standing there.
With tears in her eyes.
