Chapter 12: The Enemy Inside the Room
Every person in the chapel looked around.
Guests.
Officers.
Family.
Friends.
Anyone could be the person Marcus feared.
Daniel’s heartbeat seemed louder than the silence.
“Who?””
Marcus did not answer immediately.
His eyes moved slowly across the room.
Then stopped.
Not on Vanessa.
Not on General Hayes.
Not on Maya.
On someone standing near the back.
One of the officers.
The officer’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But Maya noticed.
She noticed because soldiers learned to recognize fear.
“General,” she whispered.
Hayes saw it too.
“Officer.””
The man straightened.
“Yes, sir.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Tell them.””
The officer remained silent.
Daniel looked confused.
“What is happening?””
Marcus stared at the man.
“Three years ago, you were assigned to investigate my disappearance.””
The officer said nothing.
“You were supposed to find out what happened.””
Still nothing.
“Instead, you erased evidence.””
The chapel gasped.
The officer finally spoke.
“That’s not true.””
Marcus shook his head.
“It is.””
The officer looked at General Hayes.
“Sir, you can’t believe him.””
General Hayes’s expression was cold.
“I believe the evidence.””
The officer’s confidence disappeared.
Daniel looked between them.
“How?””
Marcus reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small device.
A recording.
“I kept copies.””
The officer stepped forward.
“You had no right.””
Marcus smiled sadly.
“That’s what people say when they’re caught.””
Maya watched the confrontation.
The wedding had become an investigation.
The altar had become a courtroom.
And Daniel stood at the center of a truth he never asked for.
General Hayes looked at the officer.
“Why?””
The man said nothing.
“Why betray your own people?””
The officer looked away.
Then slowly laughed.
“Because you all believed loyalty was enough.””
Nobody spoke.
The officer continued.
“You followed orders. You saved lives. You wore uniforms.””
He looked at Maya.
“But none of you understood power.””
Maya’s expression hardened.
“People died because of you.””
The officer shrugged.
“People always die.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“And my father?””
The officer looked at him.
That was the first time he showed emotion.
Regret.
“Your father was never supposed to find the documents.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“So he died because of you.””
The officer did not answer.
He didn’t need to.
Marcus moved closer.
“You almost killed him.””
The officer looked at Marcus.
“And you survived.””
“Yes.””
“That was the mistake.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
The truth was finally becoming clear.
Marcus had not disappeared because he abandoned them.
He disappeared because someone wanted him gone.
General Hayes signaled the officers.
“Remove him.””
The two officers moved forward.
The corrupt officer did not resist.
But before leaving, he looked at Daniel.
“You think knowing the truth fixes everything?””
Daniel stared.
The man smiled.
“It doesn’t.””
Then he was taken away.
Silence returned.
But this silence was different.
The danger was gone.
The secrets were not.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
A thousand questions remained.
But one mattered most.
“Why did you come today?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Because I heard you were getting married.””
Daniel looked at Maya.
Marcus continued.
“And I knew she deserved the truth before she became part of a family built on lies.””
Maya looked down.
Daniel turned toward her.
The torn certificate was still on the floor.
Their wedding had been destroyed.
But somehow, standing there with the truth finally exposed, Daniel realized something.
The marriage certificate was not the only thing that had been torn apart.
His entire understanding of family had been ripped open.
Marcus walked toward him.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I don’t know if I can.””
Marcus nodded.
“I understand.””
A long silence passed.
Then Daniel looked at the old photograph.
At Maya.
At Vanessa.
At the people who had hidden pieces of his life.
And he asked the question nobody expected.
“If the truth is finally out…”
He looked at Marcus.
“Why do I feel like there’s still something you’re not telling me?””
Marcus froze.
Maya noticed.
General Hayes noticed.
And Vanessa whispered:
“Because there is.””
Daniel turned.
His mother’s face was filled with fear again.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
Then at Maya.
Then at her son.
“There’s one last secret.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Because he knew the time had come.
The secret he had spent years protecting.
The one truth even he was afraid to reveal.
“The night you were born…”
Marcus’s voice broke.
May you like
“Was not the beginning of this story.””
“It was the reason everything started.””
