Chapter 7: The Truth Hidden Under His Father’s Name

“The man who died overseas was not the person you were told he was.””

General Isaac Hayes stopped reading.

The sentence hung in the air.

Daniel stared at him.

Then at his mother.

Then back at the note.

“My father wrote that?””

Vanessa did not answer.

That was answer enough.

Daniel slowly shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was barely audible.

“No, my father died when I was eight.””

Nobody moved.

“I went to the funeral,” Daniel continued.

“I saw the pictures. I know what happened.””

General Hayes looked at him carefully.

“Do you know what you were told happened?””

The question landed harder than Daniel expected.

Because suddenly he realized something terrifying.

He knew the story.

But he had never questioned who gave it to him.

Vanessa stood slowly.

“Isaac, please.””

General Hayes turned toward her.

“You had years.””

Her eyes filled.

“I was trying to keep my son safe.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Safe from my own father?””

Vanessa looked away.

Maya watched the pain on his face.

She wanted to reach for him.

But she knew he needed answers more than comfort.

General Hayes placed the note on the table.

“Daniel, your father’s name was not the only thing changed.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

The general took a breath.

“It means the man you were told was your father may not have been the man who raised you.””

The chapel erupted with whispers.

Daniel stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Maya felt her chest tighten.

The secret was becoming larger with every sentence.

Daniel turned toward his mother.

“Tell me he’s wrong.””

Vanessa looked at him.

And the sadness in her face told him everything.

Daniel stepped back.

“You knew.””

A tear slipped down Vanessa’s cheek.

“I knew something.””

“No.””

His voice sharpened.

“You knew everything.””

“I knew enough to be afraid.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Afraid of what? The truth?””

Vanessa looked at Maya.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Of what the truth would do to you.””

Maya finally spoke.

“Daniel.””

He looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

He frowned.

“For what?””

“For being part of this.””

The honesty surprised him.

Maya continued.

“Marcus found me because he needed someone he could trust.””

Daniel looked down.

“You trusted him.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Maya’s eyes lowered.

“Because he saved my life too.””

That stopped him.

General Hayes looked at her.

Maya rarely spoke about that day.

Not even to him.

Daniel noticed.

“You never told anyone.””

“No.””

“Why?””

She looked toward the photograph.

“Because Marcus didn’t want people remembering him as a victim.””

A quiet sadness filled her voice.

“He wanted people to remember what he stood for.””

Daniel looked at the picture again.

A soldier.

A secret.

A missing piece of his own life.

General Hayes opened the folder.

“There is more.””

Vanessa immediately reacted.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

She looked terrified.

“Enough.””

Daniel stared.

“Enough?””

He walked closer.

“My entire life has been built around things you refused to tell me.””

His eyes filled.

“My father. Marcus. Maya. This photograph.””

He pointed toward the torn marriage certificate on the floor.

“You ruined the one day I thought belonged to me.””

Vanessa looked at the broken paper.

For a moment, she seemed ashamed.

Then she whispered:

“I was wrong about Maya.””

Maya looked surprised.

Vanessa faced her.

“I thought you were taking my son away.””

Maya said nothing.

“But you were the person who protected him.””

The apology was quiet.

But it came too late.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“What else are you hiding?””

Vanessa hesitated.

That hesitation answered him.

General Hayes slowly removed another document from the folder.

“This was recovered from Marcus’s personal effects.””

Daniel looked at it.

“What is it?””

“A report.””

“About what?””

The general looked at Maya.

Then Daniel.

“About the night Marcus disappeared.””

Daniel frowned.

“Disappeared?””

The word confused him.

“He died.””

General Hayes shook his head.

“No.””

The room froze.

Daniel’s face went blank.

“What?””

The general spoke carefully.

“Marcus Reed was declared missing overseas.””

Maya looked at him.

“What?””

General Hayes looked surprised.

“You didn’t know?””

“No.””

Maya’s voice became smaller.

“He told me…”

She stopped.

Daniel noticed.

“He told you what?””

Maya looked away.

“He told me he wasn’t going to make it.””

General Hayes lowered his eyes.

“Maybe he believed that.””

Daniel stared.

“Wait.””

He pointed between them.

“You’re saying Marcus might not have died?””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

And somehow that was worse.

Vanessa whispered:

“He came back.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“What?””

Her face was pale.

“He came back years later.””

The chapel went silent.

Maya felt a chill.

“When?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Before today.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You saw him?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

“When?””

She swallowed.

“Three months ago.””

Daniel stared.

Three months.

The same time Maya and Daniel had announced their engagement.

Maya felt something inside her shift.

Marcus had been alive.

He had known.

He had watched from somewhere.

And he had stayed silent.

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“Why would he disappear?””

General Hayes looked at the note.

Then at the final line.

Because suddenly the answer seemed closer than ever.

He unfolded the paper.

But before he could read it, Maya noticed something written on the back.

A name.

A name that made her blood run cold.

May you like

Because it was not Marcus.

It was hers.
