Chapter 9: The General’s Hidden Choice

The silence after the accusation felt heavier than any argument.

Daniel stared at General Isaac Hayes.

The man who had walked into his wedding like a hero.

The man who had defended Maya.

The man who claimed to be bringing truth.

Had hidden something too.

“You sealed the file?””

General Hayes nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked almost betrayed.

“Why?””

The general did not answer immediately.

Because for the first time all morning, he looked uncertain.

Not afraid.

Not weak.

Just human.

“I made a decision.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

He looked at his mother.

“I made a decision.””

He looked at Maya.

“I made a promise.””

He looked back at the general.

“Everyone had a reason.””

His voice cracked.

“But nobody thought I deserved the truth.””

Maya felt the words.

Because she was part of that too.

General Hayes lowered his eyes.

“You’re right.””

The admission surprised everyone.

“I was wrong.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You promised Marcus.””

“Yes.””

“And you broke that promise.””

The general looked at her.

“No.””

He took a breath.

“I protected it.””

Daniel frowned.

“How?””

General Hayes walked to the table.

He opened the sealed folder.

Inside was another report.

Older.

More damaged.

“The file was not sealed because Marcus did something wrong.””

He looked at Daniel.

“It was sealed because Marcus discovered something dangerous.””

Maya stepped closer.

“What?””

The general looked at the report.

“Information about a military operation.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t understand.””

“You will.””

General Hayes removed a page.

“This mission involved several soldiers.””

He looked at Maya.

“Marcus.””

Then at Daniel.

“And someone else connected to your family.””

Vanessa went pale.

Daniel noticed.

“Who?””

General Hayes placed the page down.

A name was visible.

Daniel read it.

Then froze.

Because it was a name he recognized.

A name from childhood.

A name he had heard his mother mention many times.

“No.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Daniel…”

He looked at her.

“You knew.””

She started crying.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“You knew enough.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped away.

“Who was he?””

General Hayes answered.

“Your father’s closest friend.””

Daniel frowned.

“My father had friends.””

The general nodded.

“One friend who died the same night Marcus disappeared.””

Maya looked confused.

“Why wasn’t this in the report?””

The general was silent.

Then he answered.

“Because someone removed it.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Who?””

General Hayes stared at the page.

The answer was painful.

“I don’t know.””

A sound escaped Daniel.

A frustrated laugh.

“You don’t know?””

The general looked at him.

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“So we’re back to secrets.””

Maya stepped forward.

“Daniel.””

He looked at her.

She saw how exhausted he was.

How much he had lost in one morning.

“I’m trying to understand,” he said.

His voice was softer.

“I really am.””

Maya nodded.

“I know.””

“But every time I find an answer, there’s another question.””

She had no argument.

Because he was right.

General Hayes closed the folder.

“There is one thing Marcus was certain about.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What?””

“He believed someone wanted the truth buried.””

“Why?””

The general looked toward the torn marriage certificate.

Then at Maya.

“Because the truth would connect people who were never supposed to meet.””

Daniel stared.

“Maya and me?””

The general nodded.

“Yes.””

Maya felt a chill.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa slowly stood.

Her face was full of fear.

“Because Marcus knew something about Daniel’s birth.””

Daniel froze.

“My birth?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He knew before I did.””

Maya looked at her.

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa’s voice trembled.

“I’m saying Marcus discovered Daniel wasn’t just connected to the mission.””

She looked at her son.

“He was the reason the mission happened.””

Daniel went completely still.

The words made no sense.

“My birth caused a military mission?””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That’s not what I mean.””

She looked at Maya.

“Marcus found out the truth about Daniel’s father.””

General Hayes stepped forward.

“Vanessa.””

But she continued.

Because after years of silence, she finally seemed unable to carry it anymore.

“The man Daniel called his father…”

Her voice broke.

“He wasn’t his father.””

Daniel stared.

The chapel seemed to tilt.

Maya reached for him.

But before she could touch his arm, the doors behind them suddenly opened.

A figure stood outside.

Everyone turned.

The person stepped into the bright chapel.

Older.

Tired.

Carrying years of secrets.

Daniel stopped breathing.

Because he knew that face.

A face he had only seen in old photographs.

A face everyone said was gone forever.

May you like

Marcus Reed was standing at the chapel entrance.

Alive.
