Chapter 6: The Secret Buried in the Photograph

Nobody moved.

Vanessa’s words changed the room.

Someone else was there.

Daniel stared at the photograph in her hands.

“Who?””

Vanessa did not answer.

Her fingers tightened around the edges.

Maya watched her carefully.

A person who had spent the entire morning controlling everyone suddenly looked powerless.

That meant the answer mattered.

A lot.

General Hayes stepped closer.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Her eyes moved to Daniel.

And Maya saw something painful.

Regret.

“I was trying to keep him away from this.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You mean me.””

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.””

The answer was quiet.

But it was enough.

Daniel looked devastated.

“Why?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

No words came.

Maya stepped closer to the table.

“Let me see the photograph.””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then slowly handed it over.

Maya studied it.

The image showed Marcus on the battlefield.

But now she noticed something else.

A shadow in the distance.

A person standing behind the vehicle.

Someone she had never noticed before.

Her heart started racing.

“General…”

He took the photo.

His expression changed.

“You’re sure?””

Maya nodded.

“I never saw him.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Who?””

General Hayes did not answer immediately.

He looked at Vanessa.

And Vanessa looked away.

That reaction said everything.

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“You know.””

Vanessa whispered:

“I know who he was.””

The chapel waited.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Tell me.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I can’t.””

“You can.””

“I can’t.””

The desperation in her voice surprised everyone.

Daniel stared at her.

“You destroyed my wedding because you didn’t want Maya in this family.””

He pointed toward the photograph.

“Now I find out you’ve been hiding things about my entire life.””

His voice broke.

“And you still can’t tell me why?””

Vanessa looked at Maya.

“I was afraid.””

Maya frowned.

“Of what?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Of losing him.””

She looked at Daniel.

“Of losing my son.””

Daniel’s expression softened for half a second.

Then hardened again.

“You already lost me.””

The sentence crushed her.

General Hayes quietly placed the photographs back into the folder.

“There is one person who can answer this.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Who?””

The general hesitated.

Then reached inside the folder.

He pulled out a small document.

Not a military report.

Something personal.

An old handwritten note.

Maya recognized it instantly.

Her face changed.

“No.””

Daniel noticed.

“What?””

Maya stared at the note.

“Where did you get that?””

General Hayes looked at her.

“Marcus gave it to me.””

Her breathing stopped.

“That wasn’t supposed to leave his belongings.””

The general frowned.

“Maya.””

She stepped back.

Because she understood.

Something was wrong.

Marcus had trusted her with a secret.

But this note was never supposed to exist outside her possession.

Daniel looked between them.

“What does it say?””

General Hayes unfolded it.

The first line made Vanessa sit down.

Because she recognized the handwriting.

The same handwriting.

The same man.

The same secret.

Daniel saw the reaction.

“Mom?””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

And then she whispered the name of the person she had been trying to hide from him for years.

“Your father.””

The room went silent.

Daniel froze.

“My father?””

Maya felt her entire body go cold.

Because Marcus had never mentioned Daniel’s father.

Not once.

General Hayes looked down at the note.

Then slowly read the first sentence.

“Daniel, if you are reading this, it means your mother finally ran out of ways to hide the truth.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Daniel stared at her.

“My father wrote this?””

Nobody answered.

Then General Hayes turned the page.

And the next sentence made Maya’s heart stop.

Because it revealed the one thing Marcus had never told her.

May you like

The one thing that changed the entire mission.

“The man who died overseas was not the person you were told he was.””
