Chapter 10: The Night Everyone Lied

“I never wanted you to know this way.””

My father’s words hurt more than Daniel’s accusation.

Because Daniel was a stranger.

A man outside our door.

A man who could be lying.

But my father…

My father was the person who held my hand when I was scared of thunderstorms.

The person who stayed up all night when I had a fever.

The person who told me the truth always mattered.

And now he was standing there, looking like someone who had been carrying a secret too heavy to hold.

I stepped back.

“Know what?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Maya…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“No more.””

The kitchen became silent.

“I spent my whole life believing my mom left me. Then I found out she didn’t. Then I found out Vanessa lied. Then some man appears at our door saying you’re hiding something too.””

I looked at him.

“I need you to tell me.””

Marcus looked toward the glass door.

Daniel was still outside.

Still waiting.

Still listening.

My father lowered his voice.

“Not with him here.””

Daniel laughed.

“Still trying to control the story, Marcus?””

My father’s face tightened.

“Leave.””

“You know she deserves to know.””

“I said leave.””

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“You’re worried because she’ll hear what you did.””

My mother spoke through the phone.

“Daniel, stop.””

“You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore, Elena.””

The anger in his voice appeared for the first time.

It was quick.

Sharp.

Then gone.

Marcus noticed too.

He walked toward the door.

“You have five seconds to leave my property.””

Daniel laughed.

“Still the hero.””

Marcus opened the door slightly.

Not enough for Daniel to enter.

Enough for me to see him.

He was older than I expected.

Gray beginning at his temples.

A perfectly pressed shirt.

A calm smile that didn’t reach his eyes.

He looked like someone people trusted.

That scared me.

Because dangerous people rarely looked dangerous.

“Maya,” Daniel said.

I froze.

He knew my name.

“I’ve wanted to meet you for a long time.””

Marcus stepped in front of me.

“She’s not talking to you.””

Daniel looked at my father.

“You really think you can hide everything forever?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“You should have told them years ago.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“Don’t.””

Daniel smiled slightly.

“You still protect him.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“Protect who?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel looked at me.

“Ask your father why your mother disappeared that night.””

My mother’s voice became urgent.

“Maya, don’t listen to him.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

Silence.

That was enough.

I turned to Marcus.

“Dad.””

He looked broken.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Broken.

“Eleven years ago,” he said quietly, “your mother and I had a fight.””

My heart sank.

“You fought?””

“Yes.””

“About what?””

He looked down.

“Daniel.””

The name felt poisonous now.

Marcus continued.

“Your mother discovered he had been stealing from her company.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

“You’re still blaming me?””

“You threatened her.””

“You have no proof.””

My father ignored him.

“Elena wanted to expose him.””

My mother was crying quietly.

“I should have listened.””

I looked at her.

“Listened to what?””

She closed her eyes.

“I wanted to leave that night.””

The words hurt.

“Leave me?””

“No.””

She answered immediately.

“Never you.””

My throat tightened.

“I wanted to take you somewhere safe.””

Marcus continued.

“But I thought we had time.””

The sentence made my stomach drop.

“What happened?””

Nobody moved.

Then Marcus said:

“Your mother left the house.””

“And?””

“And her car was found abandoned.””

I stared.

“What?””

My mother whispered:

“I was taken.””

The room went cold.

Daniel stopped smiling.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Marcus looked at him.

“You thought nobody would find out.””

Daniel shook his head.

“This is ridiculous.””

My father continued.

“Elena was missing for three days.””

I looked at my mother.

“Three days?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

My mother’s voice broke.

“Daniel found me.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re making me the villain because it’s easier.””

My father closed the door.

This time, completely.

The lock clicked.

And everyone inside knew.

The real story had finally begun.
