Chapter 14: The Truth My Mother Buried

Nobody spoke.

Not Marcus.

Not Vanessa.

Not even Daniel.

Because the picture had changed everything.

Clara wasn’t a story from the past.

She wasn’t someone who disappeared.

She was here.

Watching.

Waiting.

My father took my phone.

His face tightened.

“She’s nearby.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I told you.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You knew?””

Daniel smiled.

“I know more than all of you.””

My father’s anger returned.

“Why are you helping her?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

Because for the first time, he looked offended.

“Helping her?””

He laughed.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your aunt and I had the same goal.””

My mother whispered:

“Destroy me.””

Daniel looked toward the phone.

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“Expose you.””

I felt confused.

“Expose what?””

Nobody answered.

My mother looked broken.

I turned toward her.

“Mom.””

She was quiet.

Then:

“I had another child.””

The world stopped.

My father looked shocked.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I stared at the phone.

“What?””

My mother cried.

“Before you.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“You had a daughter?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

My mother looked away.

“She died.””

The room went silent.

I felt a thousand emotions at once.

Sadness.

Confusion.

Anger.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t want you to carry my pain.””

“But I carried yours anyway.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

My mother started crying.

“I know.””

I looked at the letter.

At all the secrets.

All the things everyone thought they were protecting me from.

“But what does that have to do with Clara?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Clara blamed me.””

“For her daughter?””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at the letter.

“Was it your fault?””

My mother shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel interrupted.

“That’s what she tells herself.””

My father looked at him.

“You were there?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

My mother’s voice became softer.

“Clara’s daughter was sick.””

I listened.

“Doctors warned us she needed treatment immediately.””

“What happened?””

My mother swallowed.

“I helped her.””

“That sounds good.””

“It wasn’t enough.””

She looked down.

“And Clara never forgave me.””

I stared.

“So she ruined your life because she was grieving?””

My mother cried.

“Grief can turn into anger.””

Marcus looked toward Daniel.

“And you?””

Daniel smiled.

“I saw an opportunity.””

The honesty was terrifying.

“I knew Clara was vulnerable.””

My father’s hands tightened.

“You used her.””

“Yes.””

Daniel didn’t deny it.

“I used her anger.””

The room became silent.

“To get Elena’s company.””

My mother whispered.

“And then when I refused…”

Daniel finished:

“I made sure nobody believed you.””

I looked at him.

“You destroyed my family.””

Daniel looked at me.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Your family destroyed itself.””

I hated that part of me wondered if he was right.

Because everyone had lied.

Everyone had hidden something.

Even the people who loved me.

My father walked toward Daniel.

“You’re leaving.””

Daniel didn’t move.

“You think this is over?””

“Yes.””

“No.””

Daniel smiled.

“Because Clara isn’t the biggest secret.””

My mother froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked at her.

“You never told Maya why you really came back.””

My heart stopped.

My mother didn’t answer.

“Mom?””

She looked at me.

“I came back because I found something.””

“What?””

Daniel laughed.

“She found proof.””

Marcus frowned.

“Proof of what?””

Daniel stepped back.

“The person who caused the accident that killed Clara’s daughter…”

Everyone froze.

“…wasn’t Elena.””

I stared.

“Then who?””

May you like

Daniel looked directly at Vanessa.

And the entire room changed.
