Chapter 9: The Man Who Knew Everything
Nobody moved.
The voice outside the door was calm.
Too calm.
That was what scared me.
Angry people made noise.
Dangerous people stayed quiet.
Marcus stood between us and the hallway.
His hand rested on the door handle.
But he didn’t open it.
“Who is this?””
The man laughed softly.
Like the question amused him.
“You know exactly who this is.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
“Daniel,” she whispered.
Hearing the name out loud made everything real.
The man outside wasn’t a memory.
He was here.
Now.
At our house.
My house.
The place where I had always felt safe.
The door opened slightly.
Not because Marcus opened it.
Because someone outside pushed against it.
My father immediately stepped forward and forced it closed.
“Get away from my door.””
Daniel’s voice stayed calm.
“You always were protective, Marcus.””
My father froze.
“How do you know me?””
A pause.
Then:
“I know everyone involved.””
My skin prickled.
Everyone.
Marcus looked at me.
Then at the note in his hand.
Daniel knew about the letter.
He knew about me.
“How long have you been watching us?””
No answer.
That silence said enough.
My father’s jaw tightened.
“Leave.””
Daniel sighed.
“You don’t understand what’s happening.””
My mother suddenly spoke through the phone.
“Daniel.””
The voice outside went quiet.
“Maya’s mother.””
I felt a chill.
The way he said it wasn’t angry.
It was almost familiar.
Like he had been waiting years to hear her voice.
“You finally decided to come back.””
My mother’s voice became cold.
“You stayed away because you knew I was looking for the truth.””
Daniel laughed.
“No. You stayed away because you were afraid.””
My father looked confused.
“Afraid of what?””
Nobody answered.
The silence was unbearable.
Then Daniel said:
“Ask Elena why she really disappeared.””
My heart dropped.
“What does that mean?””
My mother immediately responded.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Daniel laughed again.
“She never told you?””
Marcus looked at the phone.
“Elena.””
My mother didn’t answer.
That was the first time I saw her afraid.
Not sad.
Not hurt.
Afraid.
“What didn’t you tell me?””
My mother whispered:
“Maya…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“I’m done with secrets.””
The room became silent.
Even Daniel stopped speaking.
I looked at the door.
“I want the truth.””
A few seconds passed.
Then Daniel spoke.
“Good.””
My father looked furious.
“You don’t get to decide anything for her.””
Daniel ignored him.
“Maya, your mother wasn’t just hiding from me.””
My fingers tightened around the edge of the counter.
“She was hiding something else.””
My mother’s voice became urgent.
“Daniel, stop.””
That made my stomach twist.
Because I knew.
Whatever he was saying…
There was something there.
Marcus turned toward Elena’s voice.
“What is he talking about?””
Silence.
Then my mother said:
“I was trying to protect Maya.””
Everyone had said that.
Vanessa.
My mother.
Everyone.
But nobody explained from what.
I looked at the trophy.
The note.
The photograph.
The years stolen from me.
“What are you protecting me from?””
My mother didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
“Your father.””
The room froze.
Marcus stared at the phone.
“What?””
I looked at my dad.
“No.””
Daniel continued.
“Ask him what happened the night Elena disappeared.””
My father’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
A flicker.
A memory.
A fear.
And suddenly, for the first time that day…
I wondered if my father had secrets too.
“Maya,” Marcus said softly.
I looked at him.
“Tell me.””
He didn’t speak.
The man outside smiled.
I could hear it through the door.
“Now you understand.””
My father slowly looked down.
At the letter.
At the photograph.
At me.
May you like
And then he whispered:
“I never wanted you to know this way.””
