Chapter 12: The Person Behind the Secret
Nobody wanted me to turn the page.
That was the problem.
For years, everyone had decided what I could handle.
What I could know.
What truth was too painful.
But nobody asked what lies were doing to me.
I held the letter tighter.
“I’m reading it.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Maya.””
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
But certain.
“I need to know.””
Vanessa started crying.
“Maya, please.””
I looked at her.
“You had eleven years to tell me.””
She looked away.
That hurt more than if she had argued.
Because she knew I was right.
I turned the page.
The handwriting continued.
*There is one person who helped Daniel hide what happened.*
My heart raced.
*Someone who had access to our home. Someone who knew my schedule. Someone who knew exactly where I would be that night.*
I looked around the kitchen.
My home.
The place where all these secrets lived.
Marcus read over my shoulder.
His face became serious.
*I never wanted to believe it was true.*
My mother’s voice shook.
“Maya, stop.””
I looked at the phone.
“Why?””
“Because I wanted to tell you myself.””
“Tell me what?””
Silence.
Then:
“The person who helped Daniel…”
My mother stopped.
I waited.
Everyone waited.
Finally, she whispered:
“Was my sister.””
The room froze.
I blinked.
“Your sister?””
My mother didn’t answer.
Marcus looked confused.
“I thought Elena was an only child.””
Vanessa looked at the phone.
“No.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“She wasn’t.””
I turned.
“What?””
Vanessa looked like she regretted speaking.
“She had a sister.””
My father stared at her.
“How do you know that?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Again.
Another secret.
I felt anger rising.
“Everyone knows everything except me.””
Nobody argued.
Because it was true.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You knew Elena had a sister?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought it was over.””
My mother laughed sadly through the phone.
“It was never over.””
I looked at the letter again.
There was more.
*Her name is Clara.*
The name meant nothing to me.
But it meant something to Vanessa.
Her face changed.
Marcus noticed.
“Vanessa.””
She looked terrified.
“You know her.””
“No.””
The answer came too fast.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Don’t lie again.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
“I met her once.””
My stomach dropped.
“When?””
She looked at me.
“After Elena disappeared.””
The room went silent.
“You met the person who helped hurt my mother?””
Vanessa started crying.
“I didn’t know.””
“You keep saying that.””
“I swear.””
I looked at her.
“What did she tell you?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“She told me Elena had abandoned you.””
My hands shook.
The same story.
The same lie.
Over and over.
My mother’s voice became cold.
“She planned everything.””
Marcus looked at the letter.
“Why would your sister do this?””
A long silence.
Then my mother answered:
“Because she believed everything I had belonged to her.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
My mother didn’t respond.
Vanessa did.
“She was jealous.””
“Of what?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Of Elena’s life.””
The house became silent.
Then the front door handle moved.
Everyone froze.
Someone was trying to open it.
Marcus immediately stepped between us and the hallway.
Daniel’s voice came from outside.
“You found her name.””
Nobody spoke.
He continued.
“Good.””
My father looked furious.
“How are you hearing this?””
Daniel laughed.
“You still don’t understand.””
The door handle moved again.
“I’ve been waiting eleven years for Maya to find out.””
I held the letter against my chest.
Daniel spoke one final sentence.
And this time, his voice wasn’t calm.
It was threatening.
“Because once she knows what her aunt did…”
May you like
A pause.
“…she’ll finally understand why Elena was never supposed to come back.””
