Chapter 3: The Name on the Paper

“Marcus…”

Daniel barely recognized his own voice.

The name felt like a stone dropping into still water.

Ava watched her father stare at the paper in his hands, his face changing with every second. The anger was still there, but something else had replaced it.

Confusion.

Disbelief.

Pain.

Vanessa stood frozen near the couch, her fingers twisting together.

“Daniel,” she whispered.

He didn’t look at her.

“Who is Marcus?””

The question was simple.

But Vanessa reacted like he had struck her.

Ava noticed.

That was the thing about secrets.

People always reacted before they answered.

Vanessa looked toward the hallway.

“Ava doesn’t need to be here for this.””

Daniel finally looked up.

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“She stays.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“She’s a child.””

“She’s the person this involves.””

Ava’s chest tightened.

The person this involves.

She didn’t like the sound of that.

Daniel looked back at the paper.

“What is this?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

“It’s not what you think.””

Daniel gave a quiet, humorless laugh.

“I’m starting to hate that sentence.””

Ava watched him unfold the document completely.

“What is Marcus?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Someone from my past.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Your past?””

“Yes.””

“Why is his name on a document connected to my daughter’s account?””

Silence.

Ava felt her fingers go cold.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Answer me.””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“I made a mistake.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I was desperate.””

“Still not an answer.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I thought I could fix it before you found out.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Fix what?””

Vanessa didn’t speak.

So Daniel walked toward her.

Not aggressively.

Not threateningly.

Just slowly.

Like he was trying to understand how the person standing in front of him had become someone he didn’t know.

“You took Ava’s money.””

Vanessa looked away.

“You lied to me.””

Another silence.

“And now there is a man named Marcus connected to all of this.””

Daniel held up the paper.

“Tell me why.””

Vanessa sat down.

Her shoulders dropped.

For the first time since Ava had known her, she looked exhausted.

Not elegant.

Not controlled.

Just tired.

“I knew Marcus before I met you.””

Daniel’s expression didn’t change.

“How long before?””

“Years.””

“Were you together?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Ava looked between them.

She didn’t understand everything.

But she understood hesitation.

And this one felt important.

“Yes,” Vanessa finally said.

Daniel looked away.

“Together how?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“He was my fiancé.””

The room became completely silent.

Ava looked at her father.

His face was impossible to read.

“You never told me you were engaged before.””

“Because it was over.””

“When?””

“Before you.””

Daniel looked back at the paper.

“Then why is he connected to our family now?””

Vanessa rubbed her forehead.

“He contacted me.””

“When?””

“A few months ago.””

Ava’s stomach tightened.

A few months ago.

That was when the money started disappearing.

Daniel noticed the same thing.

“And that’s when the withdrawals started.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

“Wow.””

The word came out quietly.

Ava had never heard disappointment sound like that.

Not anger.

Not yelling.

Just someone realizing they had trusted the wrong person.

“Who is Marcus?”” Ava asked.

Everyone turned toward her.

She immediately wished she hadn’t spoken.

But Daniel’s expression softened.

“Ava…”

“I deserve to know.””

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

“He’s nobody.””

Daniel immediately looked at her.

“Don’t lie again.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“He’s someone who had problems.””

“What kind of problems?””

She looked down.

“Financial problems.””

Daniel stared.

“So you gave him money?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Vanessa didn’t respond.

Daniel’s patience disappeared.

“Vanessa.””

“I didn’t give him the money.””

Ava waited.

Then Vanessa said the words that made the room feel smaller.

“I used Ava’s account as proof.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I needed him to believe I could get money.””

Ava felt confused.

“Why would he need proof?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Proof of what?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Proof that I was still connected to money.””

Daniel stared.

“You showed him Ava’s account?””

“I didn’t show him everything.””

“You used my daughter’s savings to convince another man you had access to money?””

Vanessa started crying.

“I was scared.””

Ava shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

Ava’s voice trembled.

“You were scared after you got caught.””

Vanessa looked hurt.

But Ava kept going.

“You weren’t scared when you took it.””

The words surprised even Ava.

She had spent so long staying quiet.

So long trying not to make Vanessa angry.

But now she couldn’t stop.

“You knew it was wrong.””

Vanessa looked away.

Daniel watched his daughter.

And something in his expression changed.

Not anger.

Pride.

Ava had never seen him look at her that way during a fight before.

“Where is Marcus now?”” Daniel asked.

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“He disappeared.””

“After you transferred money?””

“No.””

“After you showed him my daughter’s account?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Daniel looked at the paper again.

Ava noticed his hand shaking.

That scared her more than his anger.

Her father was always steady.

Always calm.

But now he looked like the ground beneath him had cracked.

“What is this document?”” Daniel asked.

Vanessa stared at the floor.

“A loan agreement.””

Ava’s eyes widened.

“A loan?””

Daniel looked at the paper.

“Read the name.””

He already knew.

But he wanted her to say it.

Vanessa whispered:

“Marcus Reed.””

Daniel looked confused.

Then suddenly angry.

“Why would a loan agreement have your signature?””

Vanessa didn’t respond.

“Vanessa.””

She took a breath.

“Because I signed it.””

Daniel stared.

“And what did you use as collateral?””

Vanessa’s silence answered before her words did.

Ava felt a strange pressure in her chest.

She knew something terrible was coming.

Daniel slowly looked at the document again.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“You didn’t.””

Vanessa started crying harder.

“I thought I had more time.””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“What did you put up?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“The house.””

Ava stopped breathing.

The house.

The place where she lived.

The place where her father’s pictures hung on the walls.

The place where she had grown up.

Daniel stepped backward.

“You used our house?””

“I was going to fix it.””

“How?””

“I had a plan.””

“What plan?””

Vanessa looked at him.

But she didn’t answer.

Because there was another truth.

A worse one.

Daniel saw it immediately.

“There’s more.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Ava’s account wasn’t the only thing Marcus knew about.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“What else did you tell him?””

Vanessa stayed silent.

“What else?””

Ava felt tears forming again.

Because she already knew.

Whatever came next was bigger than money.

Bigger than a secret.

Daniel grabbed the edge of the table.

“Vanessa, what did you tell him?””

Vanessa’s lips trembled.

Then she whispered:

“I told him about your company.””

Daniel went completely still.

Ava looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

But Daniel didn’t answer.

He was staring at Vanessa like he had just discovered a stranger living inside his home.

“You gave him information about my business?””

“I didn’t think he would use it.””

Daniel’s voice became dangerously quiet.

“What information?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“I gave him the client list.””

The room went silent.

Ava didn’t understand what that meant.

But Daniel did.

And the look on his face told her everything.

This wasn’t just about money anymore.

This was about something that could destroy everything her father had built.

Daniel slowly picked up his phone.

“Call Marcus.””

Vanessa shook her head immediately.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because he won’t answer.””

Daniel stared.

“How do you know?””

Vanessa looked at the phone.

Then at the paper.

Then at Ava.

And Ava saw the fear return to her eyes.

“Because…”

Vanessa whispered.

“He already contacted me today.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What did he say?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her voice broke.

“He said if I didn’t get him more money by tomorrow…”

She stopped.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What?””

Vanessa looked toward the front door.

Like she was afraid someone was outside.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“He said he would tell Ava the truth about why he really came back.””
