Chapter 9: The Truth Behind the Lie

Nobody spoke for several seconds after the recorder clicked off.

The silence felt unnatural.

Like the entire house was waiting.

Ava stared at the small device in Daniel’s hand.

Her mother’s voice was gone.

But the fear in it remained.

“Marcus is not the man Ava should be afraid of.””

The sentence replayed in her mind.

Over and over.

Daniel slowly lowered the recorder.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

But Ava knew that calm now.

It was the same calm from earlier.

The calm before everything broke.

“You know something.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t.””

“Then why are you afraid?””

Vanessa looked at the photograph.

At Rachel.

At Ava.

At Marcus standing behind them.

“I thought…”

She stopped.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Thought what?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I thought Marcus was the worst thing that happened.””

Ava frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa sat down slowly.

“Rachel didn’t trust many people.””

Daniel looked at the recorder.

“But she trusted me.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why would she leave a message warning me?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because she knew something would happen.””

Ava held the photograph tighter.

“What happened to her?””

Nobody answered.

The question had been there from the beginning.

The question nobody wanted to touch.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“You know.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I know what Rachel believed.””

“Tell us.””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“She believed someone inside our circle was helping Marcus.””

Ava felt cold.

“Someone close?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked around the room.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“But Rachel knew?””

“Yes.””

“Who did she suspect?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Vanessa.””

Her voice broke.

“She never told me the name.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because she thought I would be in danger too.””

Ava looked at the recorder.

Her mother had known.

She had known something was coming.

And she had tried to leave clues.

For years.

“I don’t understand,” Ava whispered.

Everyone looked at her.

“If Marcus isn’t the person I should be afraid of…”

She looked at Daniel.

“Then why did he threaten us?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know.

And Ava could see that scared him.

Daniel always had answers.

But now he was standing in the middle of the same mystery.

The same darkness.

Just like everyone else.

Then his phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

Again.

Vanessa whispered:

“Don’t answer.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because he wants you angry.””

Daniel answered.

“Marcus.””

A pause.

Then a man laughed softly.

“You found Rachel’s message.””

Ava felt her stomach tighten.

Daniel’s grip tightened around the phone.

“Where is she?””

Silence.

Then Marcus said:

“You still think I’m the villain.””

“You threatened my daughter.””

“I tried to protect her.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Protect her?””

“Yes.””

Ava stepped closer.

She wanted to hear.

Every word.

“You stole from her.””

Marcus laughed.

“Vanessa stole from her.””

Everyone looked at Vanessa.

She closed her eyes.

Marcus continued.

“I told her not to involve Ava.””

Daniel went quiet.

Ava noticed.

Because that wasn’t what she expected.

“You expect me to believe you care about her?””

“No.””

Marcus’s voice became serious.

“I expect you to believe Rachel.””

Daniel looked at the recorder.

Marcus continued:

“She knew the truth.””

“What truth?””

A long pause.

Then:

“The truth about you.””

Ava looked at Daniel.

Her father’s face changed.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“Ask Vanessa what happened the night Rachel disappeared.””

The call ended.

Daniel immediately turned.

Vanessa looked terrified.

“What happened that night?””

Vanessa didn’t speak.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at Ava.

Then at Daniel.

“I found Rachel.””

Ava’s heart stopped.

“You found her?””

Vanessa nodded.

“After she left Marcus.””

Daniel stared.

“And?””

“She came to me.””

“When?””

“The night she disappeared.””

Ava felt dizzy.

“She was alive?””

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped back.

“You told me she left.””

Vanessa started crying.

“I thought I was helping her.””

“How?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“Rachel was injured.””

The room froze.

Ava whispered:

“Injured?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She had been fighting with Marcus.””

Daniel’s voice became low.

“What happened?””

“She said she found something.””

“What?””

Vanessa looked at the recorder.

“The same thing she hid.””

Daniel stared.

“The file.””

“Yes.””

“What was in it?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“She wouldn’t tell me.””

“Why?””

“Because she was afraid someone was listening.””

Ava looked around the room.

The house suddenly felt full of ghosts.

“Then what happened?””

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“Rachel asked me to take Ava.””

Ava stopped.

“To take me?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“Somewhere safe.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Then why didn’t you?””

Vanessa looked destroyed.

“Because someone found us.””

Ava’s breathing stopped.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at the front door.

Like she could see the memory standing there.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel’s voice sharpened.

“You don’t know?””

“I saw a car.””

“What kind?””

“I don’t remember.””

“Who was driving?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You’re telling me Rachel came to you injured, asked you to protect my daughter, and then someone found you?””

“Yes.””

“And then what?””

Vanessa looked at Ava.

“I woke up later.””

Ava felt a chill.

“What?””

“I was unconscious.””

“For how long?””

“I don’t know.””

“And Rachel?””

Vanessa looked down.

“She was gone.””

The room became silent.

Daniel stared.

“You thought she left?””

“I didn’t know what else to think.””

“But you lied.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at Ava.

“Because I thought if Marcus believed Rachel ran away, he would stop looking.””

Ava shook her head.

“But he never stopped.””

“No.””

Daniel walked away.

His hands moved through his hair.

Everything was too much.

Then Ava noticed something.

Something she hadn’t noticed before.

The photograph.

The one from the box.

She turned it over again.

The handwriting.

The picture.

The background.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

Ava pointed.

“There’s something behind us.””

Daniel took the photo.

“What?””

Ava touched the corner.

“The building.””

He looked closer.

Behind Rachel, Marcus, and little Ava was a sign.

A faded sign.

Daniel narrowed his eyes.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

Vanessa stood.

“What is it?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He walked to his laptop.

Typed quickly.

Then stopped.

Ava watched his expression.

“What?””

Daniel turned the screen.

A location.

An old property.

A storage facility.

Vanessa whispered:

“That’s where Rachel kept things.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What things?””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“The things she wanted Ava to have when she was older.””

Ava stared.

“My mom had a place for me?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel grabbed his keys.

“We’re going there.””

Vanessa immediately grabbed his arm.

“No.””

He looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because if Marcus knows about the key…”

She looked at Ava.

“He knows about the storage unit too.””

Daniel pulled away.

“Then we need to get there first.””

Ava stood.

“I’m coming.””

“No.””

Daniel answered immediately.

Ava looked at him.

“Dad.””

“It’s not safe.””

“I’m tired of everyone deciding what I can handle.””

Daniel went quiet.

Because she was right.

Ava looked at the key.

“My mother left something for me.””

She looked at him.

“I need to know what it is.””

Daniel stared at her.

Then slowly nodded.

“Okay.””

Vanessa looked shocked.

“Daniel.””

“She deserves the truth.””

They left the house together.

But none of them noticed the black car parked across the street.

Inside, someone watched them leave.

A phone lit up.

A message was sent.

*They found the key. They’re going to the storage unit.*

A reply came almost instantly.

*Good. Let them open it.*

A pause.

Then another message.

*They’ll finally learn what Rachel was hiding.*

The person in the car looked toward the house.

And smiled.

May you like

Because the storage unit wasn’t where the secret ended.

It was where the real secret began.
