Chapter 6: The Recording
Daniel stared at the message.
Ava stared at Daniel.
Neither of them moved.
The phone screen glowed between them, showing the words that had somehow managed to make the entire world feel smaller.
*Press play if you want to know why your mother really left.*
Ava’s voice was barely a whisper.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel locked the phone.
“Ava…”
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You don’t get to do that anymore.””
Daniel froze.
She immediately regretted how sharp it sounded, but she couldn’t take it back.
“No more hiding things because you think you’re protecting me.””
Daniel looked down.
“You’re right.””
The answer surprised her.
He didn’t argue.
He didn’t defend himself.
He just admitted it.
“I should have told you the truth a long time ago.””
Ava looked at the phone.
“Then play it.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“No.””
Her face fell.
“Why?””
“Because I don’t know what’s on it.””
“Exactly.””
“Ava—”
“I deserve to know.””
Daniel looked toward the house.
Vanessa was still inside.
Watching.
Waiting.
Ava followed his eyes.
“Does Vanessa know?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Ava stood.
“I knew it.””
Daniel quickly stood too.
“Ava, wait.””
“What else don’t I know?””
“Nothing.””
“You said that before.””
The words hurt him.
She saw it.
But she couldn’t stop.
Because every secret felt like another piece of her life had been taken without permission.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“I’m sorry.””
Ava looked away.
She wanted to believe him.
She really did.
But apologies didn’t erase years.
They didn’t erase birthdays.
They didn’t erase every time she asked about her mother and was given a simple answer.
“She wasn’t ready.””
“She wasn’t around.””
“Some things are complicated.””
Now she knew.
Complicated meant hidden.
Daniel walked back inside.
Ava followed.
Vanessa immediately stood.
“What did he say?””
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew he would do this.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“What?””
“The recording.””
Her silence answered him.
Ava looked at Vanessa.
“You knew?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I knew he threatened to send something.””
“You didn’t tell us?””
“I was going to.””
Ava laughed softly.
“When?””
Vanessa looked away.
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You need to tell us everything.””
Vanessa sat down.
“I’m trying.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You’re trying now because you’re cornered.””
Vanessa looked like she wanted to argue.
But she couldn’t.
“What is on the recording?”” Daniel asked.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“He only said he had something.””
“About Ava’s mother?””
Vanessa nodded.
Ava sat across from her.
“Tell me about my mother.””
Vanessa looked at her.
And for a moment, Ava saw something unexpected.
Sadness.
Real sadness.
“Her name was Rachel.””
Ava listened carefully.
“She was beautiful,” Vanessa said quietly.
Daniel looked surprised.
Vanessa continued.
“She loved music. She used to sing while cooking. She hated mornings but loved watching the sunrise.””
Ava’s throat tightened.
She had almost no memories.
Only pieces.
A perfume smell.
A soft voice.
A song she couldn’t remember.
“Why did she leave?””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
He looked back.
Neither wanted to answer.
Finally, Vanessa said:
“Because she believed she had no other choice.””
Ava frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Rachel and Marcus had problems.””
“What kind of problems?””
“Marcus was angry all the time.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Ava noticed.
“She was afraid of him.””
The room went quiet.
Ava looked at Daniel.
“You knew?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I knew they were having issues.””
“But not everything.””
“No.””
Ava looked at Vanessa.
“And you?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I knew more than I told you.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“I knew Marcus was dangerous.””
The words hit harder than Ava expected.
“Then why did you let him near me?””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“I didn’t.””
“But you brought him back.””
“I didn’t know he would come back.””
Ava looked away.
Everything was becoming too much.
Marcus.
Her mother.
The money.
The lies.
Her entire life felt like a puzzle where everyone else had pieces except her.
Daniel’s phone vibrated.
Everyone looked.
A new message.
From Marcus.
Daniel opened it.
A video file.
Ava held her breath.
“Don’t open it,” Vanessa whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because once you see it, you can’t forget it.””
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then he pressed play.
The phone audio filled the room.
At first, there was only static.
Then a woman’s voice.
Ava froze.
She knew the voice.
Not because she remembered it.
Because something deep inside her recognized it.
“Rachel,” Daniel whispered.
The recording was old.
The sound was unclear.
But the voice was unmistakable.
“If anything happens to me, Daniel needs to know the truth.””
Ava covered her mouth.
Her eyes widened.
Daniel grabbed the phone tighter.
Rachel’s voice continued.
“Marcus says he can change, but I know better now.””
Ava looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa looked like she was about to break.
“He found out about the money.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“What money?””
The recording continued.
“I tried to leave quietly. I tried to protect Ava.””
Ava’s breathing became shallow.
Protect Ava.
Her mother had said her name.
“She doesn’t deserve to grow up afraid.””
Then a sound.
A door closing.
A man’s voice in the background.
Ava couldn’t hear the words.
Rachel’s voice became urgent.
“I have to go.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
The silence afterward felt worse than the recording itself.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“What money was she talking about?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
“I don’t know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I swear.””
Daniel replayed the last few seconds.
The same words.
The same fear.
Ava looked at him.
“Dad.””
He turned.
“She was scared.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“Of Marcus?””
“Yes.””
“Then why is he saying he wants to tell me the truth?””
Nobody answered.
Because the answer was obvious.
Marcus wasn’t trying to help Ava.
He was trying to control the story.
Daniel stood.
“I’m calling the police.””
Vanessa looked alarmed.
“No.””
He stared.
“No?””
“If you do that, he’ll panic.””
“He’s already threatening my daughter.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Daniel, you don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She hesitated.
Again.
Always hesitation.
Daniel’s patience was gone.
“Explain.””
Vanessa looked at Ava.
Then whispered:
“When Rachel disappeared…”
Ava’s heart stopped.
“She didn’t leave.””
The room froze.
Daniel stared.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“I said she didn’t leave.””
Ava stood slowly.
“Then where did she go?””
Vanessa looked like she wished she could take the words back.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“Vanessa.””
“I don’t know what happened after that night.””
“What night?””
Vanessa looked at Ava.
“The night Rachel tried to run.””
Ava felt dizzy.
Daniel stepped closer.
“You told me she left.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“I thought she did.””
“You thought?””
“I found her car.””
Ava whispered:
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
Then at the front door.
Then back at Ava.
“It means Marcus might not have come back for money.””
Daniel stared.
“Then why?””
Vanessa’s voice trembled.
“Because he thinks Ava knows something.””
Ava froze.
“Knows what?””
Vanessa looked at her.
And this time, there was no hiding.
No excuse.
No way to soften it.
“Something your mother left behind.””
The room went silent.
Daniel’s phone buzzed again.
Another message.
He looked down.
His face changed.
Ava immediately knew.
“What?””
Daniel turned the screen around.
A photo.
A recent photo.
Of their house.
Taken from outside.
Below it was a message:
*You have 24 hours to give me what Rachel hid.*
Ava stared at the picture.
Someone had been watching them.
Someone had been close.
Daniel’s hand tightened around the phone.
Then Ava noticed something in the corner of the image.
A reflection.
A person standing near the street.
Watching the house.
Watching them.
And Ava whispered:
“Dad…”
Daniel looked at her.
“That’s him, isn’t it?””
Neither of them answered.
May you like
Because they both knew.
Marcus was already there.
