Chapter 5: The Father I Never Knew

Ava didn’t understand the words at first.

Not because they were complicated.

Because they were impossible.

“Marcus is your biological father.””

The sentence sat in the room like something that didn’t belong there.

Ava stared at Vanessa.

Then at Daniel.

Then back at Vanessa.

“No.””

The word came out before she could stop it.

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Ava…”

“No.””

Ava shook her head.

“My dad is my dad.””

Daniel looked at her.

And that hurt more than anything.

Because he didn’t deny it.

He didn’t say, “That’s not true.””

He didn’t say, “Vanessa is lying.””

He just stood there.

Silent.

And Ava felt her heart sink.

“Dad?””

Daniel looked away.

That one movement answered a question he didn’t want to answer.

Ava stepped backward.

“How long have you known?””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Ava—”

“How long?””

Her voice cracked.

Daniel took a breath.

“Since before you were born.””

The room spun.

Ava grabbed the edge of the table.

Before she was born.

All those years.

All those birthdays.

All those moments when she called Daniel Dad.

He had known.

Vanessa had known.

And she hadn’t.

“You knew?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Ava stared at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

The question wasn’t angry.

It was worse.

It was hurt.

Daniel looked like he had been waiting years to hear it.

“Because I was afraid.””

Ava laughed softly.

A broken sound.

“You were afraid?””

“Yes.””

“Of what?””

Daniel walked closer.

But Ava stepped back.

He stopped.

“Of losing you.””

The answer should have made her feel better.

It didn’t.

“Why would I lose you?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because I thought if you knew the truth, you might look at me differently.””

Ava wiped her eyes.

“But you knew.””

“I know.””

“You knew every day.””

“I know.””

“You knew I wasn’t your daughter.””

Daniel’s expression changed instantly.

“No.””

The word came out sharp.

“Ava, listen to me.””

She looked at him.

“You are my daughter.””

“But not really.””

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You are my daughter in every way that matters.””

Ava shook her head.

“How can you say that?””

“Because I was there.””

His voice broke slightly.

“I was there when you took your first steps.””

Ava looked down.

“I was there when you got sick and wouldn’t sleep unless I held your hand.””

His eyes filled.

“I was there when you learned how to ride a bike and cried because you thought falling meant you failed.””

Ava’s lips trembled.

“I was there for every school project. Every nightmare. Every bad day.””

Daniel touched his chest.

“You think DNA changes that?””

Ava didn’t answer.

Because part of her believed him.

And part of her was still shattered.

Vanessa quietly stood.

“I should have told you.””

Ava turned toward her.

“Yes.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I wanted to.””

“No, you didn’t.””

The words surprised Vanessa.

Ava continued.

“If you wanted to tell me, you would have.””

Vanessa looked hurt.

But Ava didn’t stop.

“You lied about money.””

“Ava—”

“You lied about Marcus.””

“Ava.””

“You lied about everything.””

Vanessa’s face collapsed.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Ava stared.

“From what?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

And that silence made Ava realize something.

Adults always said they were protecting children.

But sometimes they were protecting themselves.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“When were you planning to tell her?””

Vanessa didn’t respond.

“When?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Exactly.””

Ava looked at the front door.

Suddenly she wanted to leave.

She wanted to go somewhere where nobody had secrets.

Somewhere where nobody knew something important about her life except her.

“I need air.””

Daniel immediately moved.

“Ava—”

“I said I need air.””

She grabbed her backpack.

This time nobody stopped her.

She walked outside.

The afternoon sun was still bright.

The neighborhood still looked peaceful.

Cars still passed.

Neighbors still watered their lawns.

Everything looked normal.

But Ava felt like the world had quietly changed.

She sat on the front steps.

A few minutes later, the door opened.

Daniel came outside.

He didn’t sit immediately.

He waited.

Like he was asking permission.

Finally, he sat beside her.

Neither spoke.

For a while, they just watched the street.

Then Daniel said:

“I should have told you.””

Ava looked ahead.

“Yes.””

“I know.””

“Why didn’t you?””

Daniel sighed.

“Because when your mother left…”

He stopped.

Ava turned slightly.

“My mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your birth mother.””

The words felt strange.

Like talking about a person from a story.

“What happened?””

Daniel looked down.

“She and I weren’t together when you were born.””

“Why?””

“She made choices.””

“What choices?””

Daniel hesitated.

Ava noticed.

“Dad.””

“I don’t want to say things about her that I can’t prove.””

That surprised Ava.

Even now, he was careful.

“She left when you were very young,” Daniel said.

“And Marcus?””

“Marcus wasn’t around.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked toward the street.

“Because he chose not to be.””

Ava swallowed.

“So now he’s back?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel didn’t answer right away.

“I don’t know.””

Ava looked at him.

“You’re scared.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

That honesty surprised her.

Her father always seemed like he knew what to do.

But now he looked lost.

“Why would he care about me now?””

Daniel looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

Ava hugged her knees.

“Maybe he doesn’t.””

Daniel frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“Maybe he just wants something.””

The words hurt Daniel because they were true.

He didn’t want them to be.

But they were.

Inside the house, Vanessa watched them through the window.

Her phone vibrated.

She looked at the screen.

Her face immediately changed.

A message.

From Marcus.

She hesitated.

Then opened it.

*You told him.*

Vanessa’s fingers shook.

Another message appeared.

*That was a mistake.*

She looked outside.

At Daniel.

At Ava.

At the family she had almost destroyed.

Then another message arrived.

*Now I have to do this the hard way.*

Vanessa’s breathing stopped.

She typed quickly.

*Please. Don’t involve her.*

The reply came instantly.

*You should have thought about that before you used her account.*

Vanessa stared at the screen.

Then a final message appeared.

*Tomorrow, Ava learns everything.*

Vanessa dropped the phone onto the table.

Because she knew something Daniel didn’t.

Something Marcus had hidden from everyone.

Something that could change the way Ava saw her entire life.

Outside, Ava leaned against her father’s shoulder.

For the first time all day, she almost felt safe.

Almost.

Until Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the unknown number.

Ava noticed his expression.

“Who is it?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, he picked up.

“Hello?””

A pause.

Then Daniel’s face went pale.

Ava sat up.

“What happened?””

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

He looked at Ava.

Then at the house.

Then back at her.

“It was Marcus.””

Ava’s heart stopped.

“What did he want?””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“He said he wants to meet you.””

Ava froze.

“Me?””

Daniel nodded.

“And he said if I refuse…”

He looked toward the phone.

“He’ll send you something.””

“What?””

Daniel swallowed.

“A recording.””

Ava felt cold.

“What kind of recording?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because Marcus had already sent it.

May you like

And the message waiting on Daniel’s phone had only one line:

*Press play if you want to know why your mother really left.*
