Chapter 5: The Name Hidden in My Father’s Last Letter

The message stayed on my phone screen for almost a full minute.

I read it again.

And again.

*Ask Adrian why he lied about who killed your father.*

The words blurred.

Not because I couldn’t understand them.

Because I understood them too well.

Adrian was standing three feet away from me.

The rain fell between us.

And for the first time since I met him, I didn’t see the man who saved his son.

I saw a stranger.

A stranger who had known the truth about my family.

A stranger who had watched me carry the wrong memories for fourteen years.

“Emma.””

I looked up.

His voice was softer now.

Careful.

Like I was something fragile.

That made me angry.

“Don’t.””

His expression changed.

“I know you’re upset.””

“Upset?””

I laughed.

The sound was bitter.

“My entire life is built on things people decided I couldn’t handle.””

Rachel stepped closer.

“Emma—”

“No.””

I turned toward her.

“You too.””

She stopped.

“You knew.””

Her eyes lowered.

“I knew some things.””

“Some things?””

My hands shook as I held up my phone.

“Someone just told me Adrian lied about who killed my father.””

The silence that followed was enough.

I didn’t need anyone to confirm it.

Because they all had the same reaction.

Not surprise.

Fear.

I looked at Adrian.

“Tell me.””

He didn’t answer immediately.

And that was the worst part.

Because the truth was no longer something he was protecting me from.

It was something he was choosing whether to give me.

“Adrian.””

He closed his eyes briefly.

Then he said:

“I didn’t lie.””

I stared at him.

“You’re going to start with that?””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then why did someone send me that message?””

“Because they want you to believe I’m the enemy.””

“Are you?””

The question hung in the air.

Adrian looked at me.

And for one second, I saw something I hadn’t expected.

Pain.

Not guilt.

Pain.

“No.””

The answer came quietly.

“But I understand why you think I am.””

I looked away.

“I don’t know what to think anymore.””

“That’s exactly what they want.””

“Who?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

I was tired of that.

Tired of every conversation ending at the edge of the truth.

“Who?””

This time my voice was louder.

Adrian looked toward the empty street.

Then back at me.

“The person who destroyed your family.””

My heart tightened.

“Your uncle?””

He nodded.

“But he died.””

“No.””

The word was almost a whisper.

“He disappeared.””

I looked at the photograph again.

My uncle’s face stared back at me.

A man I had mourned.

A man everyone told me was gone.

A man who had apparently been standing behind my entire nightmare.

“How?””

Adrian looked at the old photo.

“Your father discovered your uncle was working with Victoria.””

My stomach turned.

“Working with her?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

Adrian hesitated.

Then Rachel answered.

“For money.””

I looked at her.

“Money?””

She nodded.

“Your father’s company was worth billions. When he discovered financial records showing someone was stealing from the company, he started investigating.””

“My uncle.””

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

“My own family?””

Rachel looked down.

“He wasn’t the only one.””

The parking garage suddenly felt colder.

“Who else?””

Nobody answered.

Then Adrian’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I watched his face.

“Where?””

A pause.

“I’m coming.””

He ended the call.

“What happened?””

Adrian looked at me.

“Leo is gone.””

Everything stopped.

“What?””

Rachel went pale.

“No.””

Adrian grabbed his keys.

“Someone took him from the hotel.””

I felt the blood leave my face.

The little boy from the ballroom.

The boy I had saved.

The boy who somehow connected all of this.

“No,” I whispered.

Adrian opened the car door.

“Get in.””

I looked at him.

“Why do you need me?””

His answer surprised me.

“Because whoever took Leo knows you remember.””

The drive back to the Ashford Grand Hotel felt unreal.

Nobody spoke.

The city passed outside the window.

People walked on sidewalks.

Cars moved through intersections.

Everyone continued living their normal lives.

While mine had been turned upside down in less than twenty-four hours.

I stared at the letter in my hands.

I still hadn’t finished reading it.

Part of me was afraid.

Afraid that every line would destroy another piece of my life.

But another part of me knew I couldn’t stop.

I opened it again.

The handwriting was my father’s.

The same handwriting that used to appear on birthday cards.

The same handwriting that once wrote grocery lists on the refrigerator.

Now it carried secrets.

*Emma,*

*If you have found this letter, then I failed to protect you.*

My eyes burned.

*I need you to understand one thing. Everything I did was to keep you alive.*

I swallowed.

Alive.

Everyone kept using that word.

*Leo Ashford is not only connected to the Ashford family. He is connected to you.*

My hands froze.

I read the sentence again.

Connected to me.

What did that mean?

The next line was smudged.

Almost destroyed.

But I could still read part of it.

*The truth about Leo’s birth must never reach—*

The rest was missing.

A torn section.

I flipped the paper.

Nothing.

“Emma?””

I looked up.

Adrian was watching me.

“What?””

“You found something.””

I hesitated.

Then I handed him the letter.

His eyes moved across the page.

When he reached the sentence about Leo, his face changed.

“What?””

I leaned forward.

“What does it mean?””

He didn’t answer.

“Adrian.””

He looked out the window.

“Your father suspected something about Leo’s birth.””

“What?””

“I don’t know the full details.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“It’s the truth.””

I stared at him.

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my father.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Leo.””

“Yes.””

“And you don’t know?””

His silence returned.

I shook my head.

“Unbelievable.””

“Emma.””

“No.””

I looked away.

“Every time I trust someone, I find out they knew more than they told me.””

For a moment, Adrian said nothing.

Then quietly:

“You’re right.””

I looked at him.

“I’m right?””

“Yes.””

That surprised me.

He didn’t defend himself.

Didn’t argue.

“I should have told you sooner.””

“Why didn’t you?””

His answer came slowly.

“Because your father made me promise.””

I stared at him.

“My father?””

“He believed if you knew the truth, you would go looking for answers.””

“And?””

Adrian looked at me.

“And the people who wanted those answers buried would come after you.””

I thought about Victoria.

The locked door.

The message.

Leo disappearing.

Maybe he was right.

But being right didn’t make it easier.

When we arrived at the hotel, the entire lobby had changed.

The elegance was gone.

Security guards filled the entrance.

Employees whispered.

Guests were being moved away.

The place that had been a symbol of wealth now felt like a crime scene.

A woman ran toward Adrian.

“Mr. Ashford.””

“Where is my son?””

She hesitated.

“Private security is reviewing footage.””

“Show me.””

She looked at me.

Then Rachel.

Then back at Adrian.

“Sir…”

“Now.””

The woman nodded.

We followed her into a security room.

Screens covered the walls.

Different angles of the hotel played simultaneously.

The ballroom.

The hallway.

The entrance.

Then one screen froze.

Leo.

Walking down a hallway.

Holding his red toy car.

My breath caught.

“He was alone?””

The security manager shook his head.

“No.””

The footage continued.

A woman appeared.

She was wearing a black coat.

Her face was hidden.

But the way she walked…

I knew that walk.

“No.””

Adrian looked at me.

“What?””

I stepped closer to the screen.

“That’s not a stranger.””

The woman turned slightly.

For a brief second, the camera caught her face.

Rachel gasped.

Adrian went completely still.

Because we all recognized her.

Victoria Ashford.

But then the video changed.

A second person appeared behind her.

A man.

Older.

Wearing a gray coat.

The security manager paused the footage.

“Do you know him?””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at the screen.

At the face I had spent fourteen years believing was dead.

My uncle.

Alive.

Standing beside the woman who had destroyed my family.

Adrian whispered:

“He came back.””

The room went silent.

Then Leo’s voice came from the speakers.

Tiny.

Afraid.

“Uncle Daniel?””

My entire body froze.

Because the next words were captured clearly.

And they changed everything.

May you like

“I’m sorry, Leo,” my uncle said.

“You were never supposed to survive long enough to find out who you really are.””
