Chapter 7: The Truth Waiting Behind the Door
The phone felt heavier in my hand than it should have.
One photograph.
One sentence.
One impossible choice.
*Come alone, Emma.*
I stared at the picture of Leo.
His face was pale.
His eyes looked directly into the camera.
Not crying.
Not screaming.
Just waiting.
Like he already knew I would come.
Because maybe he did.
Maybe that was the worst part.
Someone had spent fourteen years studying my life.
My fears.
My weaknesses.
My memories.
And now they knew exactly where to hurt me.
“Emma.””
I looked up.
Adrian was watching me.
He already knew.
Not because I told him.
Because my face had betrayed me.
“What did they send you?””
I locked my phone.
“Nothing.””
His expression hardened.
“Don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Protect me from the truth.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because they sounded familiar.
Almost like something I had said to him.
I looked toward the house.
“I have to go inside.””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
I turned.
“No?””
Adrian stepped closer.
“You know it’s a trap.””
“I know.””
“And you’re still going?””
“Yes.””
“Emma.””
His voice lowered.
“If you walk in there alone, you’re giving them exactly what they want.””
I looked at him.
“And if I don’t?””
He had no answer.
Because we both knew.
Leo was inside.
A child was inside.
And whoever had taken him had already calculated every possible move.
Rachel stepped between us.
“Maybe there’s another way.””
I looked at her.
“Do you have one?””
She opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
That was answer enough.
I looked at the house again.
A single light burned on the second floor.
Behind one of those windows was Leo.
A boy I had saved without knowing why.
A boy connected to a past I couldn’t remember.
A boy everyone was willing to destroy secrets for.
“I’m going in.””
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
I turned.
“You said you wanted to protect me.””
“Yes.””
“Then trust me.””
His expression changed.
Because he knew.
I wasn’t asking permission.
I was asking him to believe I wasn’t the scared sixteen-year-old girl who had lost everything.
I was someone who had spent fourteen years surviving.
Finally, he whispered:
“Five minutes.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“If you’re not out in five minutes, I go in.””
“That defeats the whole purpose.””
“It’s the only deal you’re getting.””
I almost argued.
Then I saw his eyes.
He wasn’t trying to control me.
He was terrified.
I nodded.
“Five minutes.””
The front door wasn’t locked.
That scared me more than if it had been.
I pushed it open slowly.
The house smelled old.
Dust.
Wood.
Something metallic.
Something I couldn’t identify.
“Hello?””
My voice echoed.
No answer.
I stepped inside.
The living room looked untouched.
Furniture covered in white sheets.
Old paintings on the walls.
A fireplace that hadn’t been used in years.
It didn’t look like a place where someone was holding a child.
It looked like a place where someone had been waiting.
A sound came from upstairs.
A small movement.
“Leo?””
Silence.
Then:
“Emma?””
My heart stopped.
I ran.
“Leo!””
I reached the second floor and found him sitting inside a bedroom.
He was tied to a chair.
But he was unharmed.
The second he saw me, his face changed.
Relief.
“Emma.””
I rushed forward and cut the rope around his hands.
“Are you okay?””
He nodded.
Then immediately asked:
“Did my dad come?””
I froze.
“Your dad?””
He looked toward the hallway.
“Adrian.””
The question felt strange.
“Why?””
Leo lowered his voice.
“Because Uncle Daniel said he wouldn’t.””
My hands stopped.
“Why would he say that?””
Leo looked scared.
“Because he said Adrian always chooses the truth over people.””
The words sounded too mature coming from a child.
“What else did he say?””
Leo looked down.
“He said everyone lied to me.””
I sat beside him.
“Leo.””
He looked at me.
“Did he tell you why?””
The boy hesitated.
Then whispered:
“He said my real family was coming.””
Cold moved through me.
“Your real family?””
Before he could answer, the bedroom door closed behind us.
I turned.
Victoria stood there.
Alone.
No Daniel.
No guards.
Just her.
“You shouldn’t have come.””
I stood in front of Leo.
“You took him.””
Her eyes moved to the boy.
“I protected him.””
“By kidnapping him?””
“By keeping him away from people who want to use him.””
I laughed.
“You expect me to believe that?””
Victoria’s expression remained calm.
“You believe whatever Adrian tells you?””
The question bothered me.
Because I didn’t know anymore.
“Where is Daniel?””
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
“He’s gone.””
“Gone?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked at Leo.
“Because he found out something even I didn’t know.””
I felt my pulse increase.
“What?””
Victoria looked at me.
“You.””
The room became silent.
“What about me?””
She stepped closer.
“Your father wasn’t protecting Leo from the Ashfords.””
She looked directly into my eyes.
“He was protecting Leo from you.””
I stared at her.
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
I wanted to say yes.
Immediately.
But something stopped me.
The letter.
The photograph.
The way everyone reacted when I remembered.
Victoria continued.
“Your father discovered the truth about Leo’s birth.””
She paused.
“And when he realized who Leo really was, he made a choice.””
“What choice?””
“To hide him.””
“Why?””
Victoria’s voice became quieter.
“Because if the world knew Leo existed, your family would have been destroyed completely.””
I shook my head.
“You’re lying.””
“Am I?””
She looked at Leo.
“Ask him.””
I turned.
Leo looked terrified.
“Leo?””
He didn’t answer.
“Leo, what do you know?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.””
My chest tightened.
“Sorry for what?””
He whispered:
“Because I remember you.””
The room disappeared.
“What?””
Leo looked at me.
“When I was little.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“You remember me?””
He nodded.
“You told me you would come back.””
The memory hit.
A little boy.
A red toy car.
A promise.
But there was something else.
Something missing.
Something hidden.
“What happened after that?””
Leo looked down.
“My mom came.””
“Your mom?””
“Yes.””
“Who was she?””
His lips trembled.
Then he said the name.
A name I knew.
A name that changed everything.
“Your sister.””
I stopped breathing.
My sister.
The sister everyone told me had died before I was born.
The sister who existed only in old photographs.
The sister my parents never talked about.
“That’s not possible.””
Victoria watched me carefully.
“Your parents told you she died.””
I looked at Leo.
“Because she didn’t.””
The room spun.
“My sister had a child?””
Leo nodded.
“And your father spent his life protecting him.””
I stepped backward.
“No.””
My entire past cracked open.
My father’s secrets.
The missing records.
The reason Leo felt familiar.
The reason my father had been willing to risk everything.
Because Leo wasn’t just connected to my family.
He was my family.
I looked at Victoria.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“And Daniel?””
“He knew too.””
“Why?””
Her answer came softly.
“Because your sister didn’t die naturally.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“What happened to her?””
Victoria looked toward the hallway.
Then whispered:
“Ask Adrian.””
My heart sank.
Again.
“Why?””
“Because he was the last person who saw her alive.””
A noise came from downstairs.
Footsteps.
Adrian.
Victoria looked toward the door.
“He’s here.””
I turned.
“What are you going to do?””
Her eyes met mine.
For the first time, I saw something unexpected.
Regret.
“Tell him the truth.””
“Which truth?””
She looked at Leo.
Then at me.
“The truth about why your sister died.””
The door opened.
Adrian stood there.
His face changed when he saw Leo.
Then when he saw me.
But before he could speak, Victoria said:
“Adrian, she knows.””
He froze.
“Knows what?””
I stared at him.
My voice was barely a whisper.
“Why did you let me believe my sister was dead?””
Adrian’s face went pale.
And in that moment, I knew.
He had an answer.
A terrible one.
May you like
Because he didn’t look surprised.
He looked guilty.
