Chapter 9: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

I forgot how to breathe.

For fourteen years, I had lived with one certainty.

My father was gone.

Dead.

A name on a document.

A photograph on a shelf.

A memory that grew older every year because I had no new ones to replace it.

But now his voice came from downstairs.

My father’s voice.

Calling my name.

“Emma.””

Leo grabbed my hand.

“Who is that?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know.

Because the impossible had become the only thing left that made sense.

Adrian looked at me.

“Stay here.””

This time, I didn’t argue.

Not because I trusted him.

Because my mind was too busy trying to understand how a dead man could speak.

Adrian moved toward the door.

I followed anyway.

He looked back.

“Emma.””

“I need to see.””

His expression softened.

Then he nodded.

“Okay.””

The hallway felt endless.

Every step toward the stairs felt like walking deeper into a nightmare I had been trapped in since childhood.

Victoria stood near the wall.

She looked pale.

Not afraid of the person downstairs.

Afraid of what I was about to learn.

“You knew.””

She looked at me.

“I suspected.””

I stopped.

“You suspected my father was alive?””

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“I suspected he survived.””

The words barely made sense.

“Survived?””

Adrian looked at her.

“You knew?””

Victoria looked away.

“I knew there were questions.””

I felt anger rise again.

Questions.

Everyone had questions.

Everyone except me.

“You all had years to tell me.””

Nobody answered.

Then the voice came again.

“Emma.””

Closer.

The front door opened.

And I saw him.

At first, my mind refused to accept it.

Because memories don’t age.

The man I remembered was younger.

A man with dark hair.

A warm smile.

A father who used to carry me on his shoulders.

The man standing in front of me had gray in his hair.

Lines around his eyes.

A face marked by years I never got to witness.

But it was him.

It was my father.

“Dad?””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

His eyes filled instantly.

And for one terrible second, I saw the father I remembered.

Not the stranger.

Not the man connected to secrets.

My father.

“Emma.””

I stepped backward.

“No.””

His expression broke.

“I know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“This isn’t real.””

“I wish it was different.””

My hands started trembling.

“You’re dead.””

“I know.””

“You let me believe you were dead.””

The pain in his face was worse than anger.

“I had to.””

I laughed.

A broken sound.

“You had to?””

I stepped closer.

“You had to let your daughter think she lost her father?””

He looked down.

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

The sentence made me furious.

“Everyone says that.””

My voice echoed through the house.

“Everyone.””

I pointed at Adrian.

“Him.””

At Victoria.

“Her.””

“And now you.””

My father looked at the floor.

“I know how it sounds.””

“No.””

My eyes burned.

“You don’t.””

I swallowed.

“Because you got to live.””

The room went silent.

“You got to wake up every morning.””

My voice cracked.

“You got to know where I was.””

He closed his eyes.

“And I spent fourteen years visiting your grave.””

The words destroyed him.

Good.

A part of me wanted him to feel what I felt.

The emptiness.

The unanswered questions.

The years of wondering why I wasn’t enough to stay for.

But another part of me still saw the man who taught me how to ride a bike.

The man who held my hand when I was scared.

The man who used to say:

No matter what happens, I’ll find you.

And he had.

Just too late.

My father looked at Leo.

Everything changed.

His expression softened.

“Leo.””

The boy stepped forward slowly.

“You know me?””

My father’s eyes filled.

“Yes.””

Leo looked confused.

“Who are you?””

My father looked at me.

Then back at him.

“I knew your mother.””

The room became quiet.

Leo held the red toy car tighter.

“Clara?””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

“You knew my mom?””

“Yes.””

“Did she love me?””

The question was so simple.

So painful.

My father looked away for a moment.

Then nodded.

“More than anything.””

Leo’s eyes filled.

“Then why did she leave?””

Nobody spoke.

Finally, my father said:

“She didn’t.””

Leo looked up.

“She was trying to come back to you.””

A tear slipped down his cheek.

“She promised.””

My father knelt.

“She kept her promise.””

“How?””

He looked at me.

“Because she made sure you found Emma.””

I froze.

“Me?””

My father nodded.

“She knew if anything happened to her, you were the only person she trusted to protect him.””

My heart tightened.

The message on the toy.

The warning.

The memories.

Everything.

But one question remained.

I looked at Adrian.

“Why did Clara warn me about him?””

The room changed.

Everyone became still.

My father looked at Adrian.

And Adrian looked away.

There it was.

The answer.

Hidden in their silence.

“Dad.””

He took a breath.

“Adrian saved Clara.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

“But he also made a mistake.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

“What mistake?””

My father looked at him.

“You trusted Daniel.””

The name hung in the air.

Adrian said nothing.

My father continued.

“Adrian believed Daniel was helping Clara escape.””

“And he wasn’t.””

“No.””

My father looked at me.

“He was leading her into a trap.””

My stomach dropped.

“Then why did Clara warn me about Adrian?””

Adrian finally spoke.

“Because she didn’t know.””

Everyone looked at him.

He continued quietly.

“Not at first.””

I stared.

“Explain.””

He looked at the floor.

“I found Clara after Daniel attacked her.””

My breath caught.

“He had already hurt her.””

Adrian’s voice became rough.

“I tried to get her out.””

“Then why did she die?””

His jaw tightened.

“Because Daniel found us.””

The room was silent.

“And you?””

“I fought him.””

“You lost?””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“I lost.””

Adrian looked at me.

“And Clara died because I wasn’t fast enough.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my father said:

“Emma, there’s something else.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Damaged.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized it.

The handwriting.

Clara’s handwriting.

“She wrote this before she died.””

I didn’t move.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

“Because I wasn’t sure who I could trust.””

I took the envelope.

My hands shook.

Inside was one piece of paper.

Only a few lines.

*Emma,*

*If you are reading this, then Leo found you.*

My eyes burned.

*I need you to know something. The person who destroyed our family is not the person you think.*

I continued.

*Daniel was only a piece of the plan.*

My heart raced.

*The person who ordered everything was someone closer. Someone who knew every secret in our family. Someone who had access to everything we trusted.*

The paper trembled.

Then I reached the final line.

And everything stopped.

*Emma, don’t trust your father.*

I looked up.

Slowly.

My father’s face had changed.

Adrian looked shocked.

Victoria looked terrified.

And then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

From the same unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*You finally know the truth. Now ask your father why Clara wrote that letter after he was the one who helped her die.*

I looked at the man standing in front of me.

The father I had mourned.

The father I had wanted back.

May you like

And for the first time since he appeared…

I wondered if I should have been afraid when he came home.
