Chapter 6: The Child Who Was Never Supposed to Exist
Nobody moved.
The security room was filled with the sound of the paused video.
A frozen image.
A missing child.
A man who was supposed to be dead.
And a sentence that made my entire body go cold.
*You were never supposed to survive long enough to find out who you really are.*
I stared at the screen.
Leo.
A seven-year-old boy.
The same child who had looked up at me through broken glass and asked if I was hurt.
The same child who had held my hand because he was scared.
What did he mean?
Who was Leo really?
“Play it again.””
My voice barely sounded like mine.
The security manager looked at Adrian.
Adrian nodded.
“Play it.””
The footage continued.
The hallway camera showed Victoria walking beside Leo.
She wasn’t dragging him.
She wasn’t forcing him.
That almost made it worse.
Leo was following her.
Like he trusted her.
Like he had done it before.
Behind them walked Daniel.
My uncle.
The man everyone told me had died.
The man whose photograph was now burned into my mind.
Leo stopped.
Even through the speakers, I could hear his small voice.
“Where are we going?””
Victoria turned.
“You’re going to meet someone.””
“Who?””
The camera angle shifted.
The sound became unclear.
Then Daniel leaned closer.
And those words came.
“You were never supposed to survive long enough to find out who you really are.””
The footage ended.
The room went silent.
I turned slowly toward Adrian.
“Explain.””
He didn’t answer.
“Adrian.””
His eyes remained on the black screen.
“I don’t know.””
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn’t believe those words were coming out of his mouth again.
“You don’t know.””
“I know some things.””
“Then start.””
He looked at me.
“Leo’s birth records were altered.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
“Because someone wanted his identity hidden.””
“From who?””
Adrian hesitated.
“Everyone.””
I shook my head.
“No. That doesn’t make sense.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“Emma.””
I looked at her.
“Please don’t tell me you knew.””
Her silence answered before her words did.
My chest tightened.
“How much?””
Rachel looked away.
“How much did you know?””
“I knew Leo was important.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She closed her eyes.
“I knew there were questions about his birth.””
I felt anger rise.
“You all knew.””
“Emma—”
“You all knew there was something strange about this child, and nobody thought maybe I deserved to know?””
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody could argue.
Adrian took a step toward me.
“I need to tell you something.””
I almost smiled.
“Another secret?””
“No.””
His voice was different.
Serious.
“Something I should have told you fourteen years ago.””
I waited.
“Your father didn’t just investigate my family.””
He looked at the security footage.
“He investigated Leo’s birth.””
I felt the room tilt.
“Why would my father care about that?””
“Because he was the one who discovered the truth.””
“What truth?””
Adrian’s eyes met mine.
“Leo was born before Victoria married into the Ashford family.””
I frowned.
“That doesn’t explain anything.””
“No.””
He swallowed.
“Because Victoria wasn’t his biological mother.””
The words landed slowly.
I stared.
“What?””
Rachel looked down.
“Leo’s mother died before anyone could reveal the truth.””
My mind raced.
“Then who is his mother?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
He looked at the letter in my hand.
At the handwriting.
At the secret my father died protecting.
“Your father believed Leo’s mother was connected to your family.””
I felt my fingers go numb.
“My family?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Nobody answered.
And then something clicked.
The photograph.
My father.
Adrian.
Daniel.
The secrets.
The missing records.
The way Leo had looked familiar.
I remembered the first moment I saw him in the ballroom.
The scar above his eyebrow.
The dark eyes.
The feeling that I knew him.
I whispered:
“No.””
Adrian looked at me.
“Emma.””
“No.””
My voice grew louder.
“That’s impossible.””
Rachel reached for my arm.
But I stepped away.
“Don’t.””
I looked at Adrian.
“Tell me I’m wrong.””
He said nothing.
“Tell me.””
The silence broke me.
Because sometimes silence was the cruelest confession.
The next hour passed like a dream.
The police arrived.
Security teams searched the hotel.
Everyone moved around us.
But I barely noticed.
My entire world had narrowed down to one question.
Who was Leo?
And why had my father died protecting the answer?
Adrian finally received a call.
He stepped away.
I watched him.
The way he moved.
The way people listened when he spoke.
The way he carried guilt like it weighed more than his own body.
I used to think powerful people were fearless.
I was wrong.
Sometimes powerful people were just better at hiding what scared them.
Rachel sat beside me.
“You hate me.””
I looked at her.
“I don’t know what I feel.””
“That’s fair.””
“You lied.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She stared at the floor.
“Because your father asked me to.””
I looked at her.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“My father is dead.””
“I know.””
“Then why are all of you still obeying him?””
Rachel’s eyes filled.
“Because he was the only person who tried to save Leo.””
I went quiet.
She continued.
“Fourteen years ago, everyone wanted Leo hidden. Your father was the only one who looked at him and saw a child.””
I remembered the little boy behind the fence.
The lost toy car.
The scared eyes.
“He knew Leo was in danger.””
“Yes.””
“From Victoria?””
Rachel hesitated.
“From more than Victoria.””
I looked at her.
“Who else?””
Before she could answer, Adrian returned.
His face was pale.
“What happened?””
He looked at me.
“We found where they took him.””
Relief hit first.
Then fear.
“Where?””
“A private property outside the city.””
“Then let’s go.””
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
My anger returned instantly.
“No?””
“It’s a trap.””
“Leo is there.””
“I know.””
“Then we go.””
“Emma.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t get to tell me to stay away from this anymore.””
His expression softened.
“This isn’t about you proving something.””
“It is about me.””
I pointed at the letter.
“My father died because of this.””
I pointed toward the screen.
“Leo was taken because of this.””
I looked at Adrian.
“And I’m done standing outside the door while everyone else decides what I’m allowed to know.””
For several seconds, he just stared at me.
Then he nodded.
“Okay.””
Rachel looked surprised.
“Adrian.””
“She’s right.””
The admission shocked me.
He continued:
“But you stay behind me.””
I almost argued.
Then I saw his face.
Not control.
Concern.
Real concern.
I nodded.
The property was hidden deep beyond the city.
No signs.
No neighbors.
Just a large house surrounded by trees.
The kind of place where secrets could survive.
Adrian parked far away.
“We go quietly.””
Rachel checked her phone.
“No signal.””
“Of course not,” Adrian said.
I looked at him.
“You’ve been here before.””
He didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
“When?””
His face tightened.
“Fourteen years ago.””
The answer made my stomach twist.
“You brought Leo here?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
He looked toward the house.
“Because this was where your father died.””
I stopped.
The world went quiet.
The place.
The house.
The death I had spent fourteen years imagining.
It happened here.
I looked at the dark windows.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Adrian looked at me.
“Because the official story was easier.””
“What was the official story?””
“That your father died in an accident.””
“And the truth?””
He looked away.
“The truth is that he died trying to save Leo.””
A light turned on inside the house.
Someone was awake.
Then my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
Again.
I opened it.
A picture appeared.
Leo.
Sitting inside the house.
Alive.
But scared.
Underneath the image was one sentence.
*Come alone, Emma.*
Another message appeared before I could breathe.
*If Adrian follows you, Leo dies.*
I looked up.
Adrian was watching my face.
“What happened?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because in that moment, I understood something.
The person behind everything didn’t just know my past.
May you like
They knew exactly how to use it against me.
And they had been waiting fourteen years for me to come back.
