Chapter 3: The Lie Behind the Luxury
Alejandro did not raise his voice.
That was what scared everyone the most.
The old Alejandro would have exploded. The man I knew before all of this would have demanded answers so loudly that everyone in the room would have stopped breathing.
But the man standing in front of Valeria was different.
Quiet.
Controlled.
Dangerously calm.
“Tell me the truth,” he said.
Valeria stared at him.
“I can explain.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“Don’t explain. Tell me the truth.””
The lobby lights reflected off the marble floor between them. A place built to make people feel powerful suddenly felt like a courtroom.
Everyone was watching.
The guests.
The employees.
The people who had walked past me every day without knowing my name.
Now they knew.
Now they knew I was not just another worker pushing a cart.
I was Lucia Montero.
The woman someone had tried to remove from her own life.
Valeria glanced at Mr. Bennett.
That small movement told Alejandro everything.
“You two worked together.””
She shook her head quickly.
“No, that’s not what happened.””
“Then why did you look at him?””
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
Because I knew what fear looked like.
I had lived with it.
But my fear came from losing my home, my marriage, and the future I thought I had.
Hers came from being exposed.
There was a difference.
Alejandro turned toward the manager.
“How long?””
Mr. Bennett looked confused.
“How long what, sir?””
“How long have you been hiding my wife from me?””
The manager lowered his eyes.
“I was following instructions.””
“Whose?””
The silence answered before he did.
Alejandro stepped closer.
“Whose instructions?””
Mr. Bennett swallowed.
“Valeria’s.””
The lobby erupted into whispers.
Valeria’s face tightened.
“You’re lying.””
Mr. Bennett looked at her.
“You told me everything would be handled.””
“You said you understood the situation.””
“You promised nobody would find out.””
Alejandro looked between them.
The betrayal was becoming clearer by the second.
But I noticed something.
Something Alejandro didn’t.
A hesitation.
A missing piece.
Because Valeria was not the only person who benefited from me disappearing.
There was another question.
Why would anyone need me hidden?
Alejandro owned companies. He had lawyers, accountants, security teams.
A woman like Valeria could manipulate emotions.
But she couldn’t control everything.
Someone else had helped build the trap.
I stepped forward.
“I want to know something.””
Everyone looked at me.
Alejandro’s expression softened.
“Lucia, you should sit down.””
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
“I’ve been sitting quietly for months.””
I looked at Valeria.
“I want answers.””
Valeria looked away.
“You don’t understand.””
A bitter laugh escaped my mouth.
“Actually, I understand more than you think.””
She looked back at me.
“You think you lost everything because of me?””
Her words cut deeper than I expected.
Because there was something behind them.
Something complicated.
I studied her face.
“You were trying to take my husband.””
She shook her head.
“I was trying to survive.””
The room went silent.
Alejandro frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Valeria looked at him.
For the first time, the confidence disappeared completely.
“I didn’t know what they were planning.””
“They?””
Alejandro repeated the word.
“Yes.””
Her eyes moved toward Mr. Bennett.
Then toward me.
“There are things you don’t know about your company.””
Alejandro’s expression changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Valeria took a deep breath.
“I was told you were going to divorce Lucia.””
My heart tightened.
Alejandro looked at me.
“I never said that.””
“I know that now.””
“Who told you?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Your brother.””
The name hit the room like a dropped glass.
I had heard about him.
Marcus Montero.
Alejandro’s younger half-brother.
The man who worked beside him but always seemed to stand in his shadow.
The man who smiled during family dinners while his eyes calculated everything.
Alejandro stepped back slightly.
“No.””
Valeria shook her head.
“Yes.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does.””
Her voice became stronger.
“Marcus told me your marriage was over. He said Lucia was going to leave you after the baby was born. He said you were preparing a transfer because you didn’t want a divorce battle.””
Alejandro looked at me.
I saw confusion.
Then realization.
Then pain.
Because suddenly, all the things that never made sense started connecting.
The cold behavior.
The legal paperwork.
The missing communication.
The people around him acting like I was a problem.
Someone had created a story.
And everyone had been living inside it.
I looked at Alejandro.
“Did you really believe I would leave you?””
His face broke.
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
“No, Lucia.””
His voice lowered.
“I never believed that.””
I looked at him.
“Then why didn’t you come home?””
That question hurt him more than anything else.
Because there was no easy answer.
He looked away.
And I knew.
There was something he still wasn’t telling me.
A secret.
A decision.
Something that had started all of this.
Before he could speak, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
The color drained from his face.
“Who is it?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
May you like
Because the name on the screen was enough.
Marcus Montero.
