The Wife They Tried to Hide / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9: The Last Move

The first thing Alejandro did was call the police.

The second thing he did was call his attorney.

The third thing he did was look at me and say, “You are not going anywhere alone.””

I almost argued.

The old version of me would have.

I had spent months proving I could survive without anyone protecting me. I had learned how to stretch money, hide fear, and carry pain without letting the world see it.

But this was different.

This wasn’t about pride.

This was about the family we were trying to save.

So I nodded.

For the first time in a long time, I let someone stand beside me.

The flash drive sat on the table in Alejandro’s office.

The same office where I had once brought him lunch.

The same office where I had sat beside him during late nights, listening to him talk about dreams.

Now it held evidence of the person who almost destroyed us.

Alejandro’s attorney arrived within the hour.

A woman named Evelyn Carter.

She was sharp, calm, and the kind of person who noticed everything.

She reviewed the files without saying much.

That made me nervous.

People who react quickly are easier to read.

People who stay quiet are usually finding the truth.

Finally, she looked up.

“This is bigger than a family dispute.””

Alejandro leaned forward.

“Explain.””

“These files show a pattern.””

She turned the laptop toward us.

“There are altered documents. Communications with employees. Attempts to create false narratives about Lucia’s intentions.””

She looked at me.

“Someone was building a case against you.””

My stomach tightened.

“A case for what?””

“Fraud. Financial misconduct. Possibly to remove you from ownership rights.””

Alejandro’s face hardened.

“He wanted to make her look guilty before she even knew she was accused.””

Evelyn nodded.

“That appears to be the plan.””

I looked at the screen.

There were emails.

Messages.

Notes.

A timeline.

My life reduced to a strategy.

A problem to solve.

A person to remove.

Then I saw something that made me stop breathing.

A file labeled:

“Final Transfer.””

I pointed.

“What is that?””

Evelyn opened it.

The room became silent.

Inside was a document prepared for Alejandro’s signature.

A transfer agreement.

One that would move control of several companies into a temporary management structure.

Managed by Marcus.

Alejandro read quickly.

Then slowly.

“He was going to take everything.””

Not just money.

Not just influence.

Everything Alejandro had built.

But there was something else.

A section near the bottom.

Evelyn zoomed in.

“Wait.””

We all looked closer.

“What?”” Alejandro asked.

She pointed.

“This requires two signatures.””

I felt a chill.

“Whose?””

Evelyn read the names.

“Alejandro Montero.””

She paused.

“And Lucia Montero.””

My heart sank.

“He needed my signature.””

“Yes.””

Alejandro looked at me.

“That’s why he tried to destroy your reputation.””

Because if I was seen as untrustworthy, desperate, or dishonest, my signature would become meaningless.

Marcus didn’t just want me gone.

He wanted me discredited.

The betrayal felt heavier because it was so calculated.

He wasn’t reacting.

He was planning.

A knock interrupted us.

Everyone froze.

Security had been increased.

Nobody was supposed to enter without permission.

A guard appeared at the door.

“Mr. Montero, someone left this at reception.””

He handed over an envelope.

Alejandro didn’t touch it.

“Who delivered it?””

“No one saw.””

Evelyn stood.

“Don’t open it.””

But Alejandro looked at me.

And I knew what he was thinking.

This was no longer about fear.

It was about ending this.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was one piece of paper.

A handwritten note.

“You always did choose love over business.””

Alejandro’s face changed.

Below the message was another sentence.

“Let’s see what you choose now.””

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone stared.

He answered.

“Marcus.””

A laugh came through.

“You found the files.””

Alejandro’s voice became ice.

“You’re finished.””

“No.””

Marcus sounded calm.

“You’re emotional. That’s your problem.””

“You destroyed my family.””

“I saved your company.””

“You almost ruined my wife.””

A pause.

Then Marcus said something that made my blood run cold.

“I never wanted Lucia hurt.””

Alejandro looked at me.

“Then why?””

“Because she was the one thing you loved more than power.””

The words were cruel because they were true.

Marcus had understood Alejandro’s weakness.

But he had misunderstood something else.

Love was not always a weakness.

Sometimes it was the reason people finally fought back.

Alejandro said:

“You’re going to answer for everything.””

Marcus sighed.

“Maybe.””

Another pause.

“But before that happens, there’s one thing you should know.””

Alejandro tightened his grip on the phone.

“What?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Valeria wasn’t the only person helping me.””

Everyone went still.

I looked at Alejandro.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus continued.

“Ask your wife who gave me access to the first documents.””

My heart dropped.

Because once again, a shadow appeared behind the truth.

Alejandro looked at me.

Not accusing.

Just confused.

“Lucia?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know what he’s talking about.””

The call ended.

And for the first time since this nightmare began, I felt something worse than anger.

Fear.

Because what if Marcus had one final lie?

What if he had found a way to make us doubt each other again?

Then Evelyn spoke.

“Don’t let him separate you.””

We looked at her.

“That’s what he wants.””

She closed the laptop.

“He has lost control. The only weapon he has left is confusion.””

I looked at Alejandro.

And I realized something.

For months, Marcus had been trying to make us strangers.

But now we knew the truth.

May you like

And the truth had brought us back together.

No matter what came next.
