The Wife They Tried to Hide / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

Valeria was waiting in a quiet café the next morning.

Not the kind of place where wealthy people went to be seen.

The kind of place where people went when they didn’t want anyone asking questions.

Alejandro sat across from her.

I sat beside him.

Not because I trusted her.

Because I was tired of people telling my story without me being present.

Valeria looked different.

The confidence was gone.

The perfect image had cracks.

She looked like someone who had finally realized she was no longer protected by the people who used her.

“I know you don’t want to see me,” she said.

Alejandro’s expression remained cold.

“Then why are we here?””

Valeria looked at me.

“Because she deserves the truth.””

I almost laughed.

“The truth from you?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

That surprised me.

“I was wrong.””

The words were quiet.

Simple.

But they mattered.

Not because they fixed anything.

They didn’t.

Some damage cannot be repaired by one apology.

“I thought I understood what was happening,” Valeria continued.

“I thought Lucia was leaving you.””

Alejandro said nothing.

“I thought I was helping you.””

I looked at her.

“You were helping yourself.””

She accepted that.

“Yes.””

No excuse.

No argument.

Just honesty.

And somehow, that made it more uncomfortable.

“Marcus contacted me first,” she said.

Alejandro’s eyes narrowed.

“When?””

I felt a chill.

“A year?””

She nodded.

“He told me you were unhappy. He told me your marriage was only about appearances.””

My jaw tightened.

“That was a lie.””

“Yes.””

She looked down.

“I know that now.””

Alejandro leaned forward.

“What else?””

Valeria took a breath.

“He told me there was going to be a leadership change in the company.””

“Meaning?””

“Meaning he expected you to step away.””

The table went quiet.

Marcus had not just wanted money.

He wanted control.

Valeria continued.

“He said once Lucia was gone, you would make emotional decisions. He said you would need someone who understood your world.””

Her voice became smaller.

“I thought he meant me.””

There it was.

The painful truth.

She had not only been manipulated.

She had also wanted something.

She wanted a life she believed was waiting for her.

I could understand wanting love.

I could understand wanting to be chosen.

But wanting something did not give anyone permission to destroy someone else.

“Why tell us now?”” Alejandro asked.

Valeria looked toward the window.

“Because Marcus abandoned me too.””

She gave a bitter smile.

“Once I stopped being useful, he stopped answering.””

Alejandro’s expression didn’t change.

“Where is he?””

Valeria hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

But then she reached into her purse.

She placed a small flash drive on the table.

“I found this in his office.””

Alejandro stared at it.

“What is it?””

“Proof.””

The word sat between us.

“Proof of what?””

Valeria looked directly at me.

“That Marcus planned everything.””

My heart started beating faster.

Alejandro picked up the drive.

“Why didn’t you give this to me before?””

Her eyes filled with shame.

“Because I was scared.””

I understood that feeling.

Fear had controlled all of us.

The difference was what we did after we realized the truth.

Alejandro stood.

“We need to see what’s on this.””

As we walked out, my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

I opened it.

And felt the blood leave my face.

It was a picture.

A picture of me entering the hotel months earlier.

Underneath it were words.

“You should have stayed hidden.””

I stopped walking.

Alejandro noticed.

“What happened?””

I handed him the phone.

His expression turned dark.

Because the message wasn’t just a threat.

It was a warning.

Someone knew we had the evidence.

May you like

And whoever sent it wanted us to know one thing.

The person behind everything was still watching.
