The Wife They Tried to Hide / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7: The Document That Was Twisted

Marcus held the folder between his fingers like he was presenting a winning hand.

That was the thing about people who spend their lives manipulating others.

They become so confident in their own plans that they forget one important detail.

The truth has a way of surviving.

Alejandro took the folder.

He didn’t rush.

He didn’t react.

He simply opened it.

I watched his eyes move across the first page.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Marcus stood there waiting for the explosion.

He wanted anger.

He wanted confusion.

He wanted Alejandro to look at me the way he had months earlier, when lies still had room to breathe.

But that moment was gone.

“What is this?”” Alejandro asked.

Marcus tilted his head.

“You tell me.””

Alejandro looked back at the document.

“It’s a financial authorization form.””

Marcus smiled slightly.

“Signed by Lucia.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

Because I knew that paper.

I remembered that meeting.

Six months earlier.

Before everything fell apart.

Before I was pushed out of my own life.

“That document was for the baby foundation,” I said.

Marcus looked at me.

“Interesting.””

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“You know exactly what it was for.””

Alejandro looked at me.

“The baby foundation?””

I nodded.

“Your company was starting a community program. Remember?””

He stared.

Slowly, pieces started connecting.

The program had been his idea.

A foundation that would help young parents with childcare, education, and financial assistance.

I had loved the idea because it reminded me of the man Alejandro used to be.

The man who believed success meant helping people.

“I signed paperwork because you asked me to review the family support division,” I said.

Marcus laughed quietly.

“Convenient.””

I looked at him.

“You changed the paperwork.””

His expression shifted.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Alejandro saw it.

“You changed it?””

Marcus recovered quickly.

“Don’t listen to her.””

“No.””

Alejandro’s voice became sharper.

“I asked you a question.””

Marcus looked at him.

“I adjusted some language.””

“To what?””

Silence.

“To protect the company.””

There it was again.

That phrase.

Always protection.

Always a reason.

Always some excuse that made selfishness sound noble.

Alejandro opened the document again.

“What exactly did you change?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

I knew.

And now Alejandro knew too.

The original document gave me authorization to help manage the foundation.

The version Marcus presented made it look like I was transferring company assets into my personal control.

A small change.

A few sentences.

A completely different meaning.

That was how people like Marcus destroyed lives.

Not with obvious lies.

With carefully edited truths.

“You wanted me to look like I was stealing from my own husband,” I said.

Marcus looked at me.

“You wanted power.””

I almost couldn’t believe him.

“Power?””

“Yes.””

His voice hardened.

“You think everyone doesn’t know who you are?””

Alejandro stepped forward.

“Careful.””

But Marcus kept going.

“You married a wealthy man. You had access to everything. Everyone assumed you were innocent because you were the wife.””

My chest tightened.

Not because his words hurt.

Because they revealed how he thought.

He never saw relationships.

He only saw transactions.

“Is that what you told Alejandro?”” I asked.

Marcus didn’t respond.

“That I was using him?””

Still nothing.

“That I wanted his money?””

His silence was enough.

Alejandro looked devastated.

Not because he believed Marcus.

Because he was realizing how much poison had been poured into his life.

“I trusted you,” Alejandro said.

Marcus looked at him.

“I was trying to save what you built.””

“No.””

Alejandro shook his head.

“You were trying to take it.””

The confidence left Marcus’s face.

Only for a second.

But it was there.

The first crack.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.””

“I know exactly what I’m saying.””

Alejandro held up the document.

“You used my wife’s signature against her.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“You’re choosing her over your own family?””

Alejandro stared at him.

And then he said something I would never forget.

“She is my family.””

Marcus went quiet.

Because he finally understood.

The old Alejandro might have been controlled by fear.

By pressure.

By assumptions.

But the man standing there now had lost everything once already.

He wasn’t afraid of losing anymore.

Marcus left after that.

No dramatic goodbye.

No final threat.

Just a man walking away because his plan had failed.

But I knew it wasn’t over.

People like Marcus didn’t spend months building a trap just to walk away when someone found the door.

That night, Alejandro and I sat in the kitchen.

The same kitchen where we had cooked together.

The same kitchen where we had once danced while waiting for dinner to finish.

It felt strange being there.

Like two people visiting an old memory.

“I should have believed you,” Alejandro said.

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised him.

But I couldn’t lie anymore.

“I needed you to.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

A long silence passed.

Then he asked:

“Do you still love me?””

The question hurt.

Because the answer was not simple.

Love doesn’t disappear just because someone hurts you.

But love also doesn’t erase pain.

“I do.””

His eyes lowered.

“But I don’t know if that’s enough.””

He nodded slowly.

“I understand.””

And that was the first time I believed he actually did.

Not because he said the right thing.

Because he didn’t try to force me to forgive him.

He accepted that forgiveness was something he had to earn.

Later that night, I woke up to find Alejandro sitting in the living room.

Alone.

Holding the ultrasound picture from our baby appointment.

I watched him from the hallway.

And for the first time in months, I saw him grieving too.

Not just the situation.

The time he lost.

The moments he missed.

The father he almost failed to become.

Then his phone buzzed.

He looked down.

His face changed.

I knew immediately.

Something else had happened.

He read the message.

Then looked toward me.

“Lucia.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

May you like

He stood slowly.

“It’s Valeria.””
