Chapter 4: The Man Behind the First Lie
For five seconds, nobody moved.
The voice coming from the speakers filled the old building.
Calm.
Controlled.
Familiar.
Adrian.
But the phone in my hand was still connected to him.
I could hear his breathing.
I could hear the silence on the other end.
My mind struggled to understand what my eyes and ears were telling me.
“How are you doing this?”” I whispered.
Adrian’s voice on the phone became sharper.
“Nia, where are you?””
I looked toward the ceiling speakers.
Then back at my phone.
“You tell me.””
“Nia, I swear I’m not there.””
The voice from the speakers laughed softly.
Not Adrian’s usual laugh.
This one was colder.
More confident.
“You always did underestimate how many people know your secrets.””
Evelyn moved quickly.
She grabbed my arm.
“We need to leave.””
I looked at her.
“You knew this would happen.””
Her eyes filled with regret.
“I knew someone would come.””
“Someone?””
She looked toward the entrance.
“Not someone.””
A pause.
“Everyone.””
The lights flickered again.
Then the main doors opened.
Three people walked inside.
Two security guards.
And behind them…
Vanessa.
My chest tightened.
She walked into the building wearing a long coat over her evening dress from the gala.
The same woman who had stood beside Adrian hours earlier.
The same woman who had smiled while I was humiliated.
But now there was something different in her expression.
Not arrogance.
Not victory.
Fear.
“Nia,” she said quietly.
I stared at her.
“You followed me.””
“No.””
She looked at Evelyn.
“I came because I finally understand what Adrian has been hiding.””
I almost laughed.
“Now you understand?””
Vanessa flinched.
Good.
For once, she felt something close to what I had felt.
Betrayal.
Evelyn stepped between us.
“Why are you here?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“Because Adrian wasn’t honest with me either.””
That surprised me.
Not because I trusted Vanessa.
I didn’t.
But because powerful men like Adrian usually made sure their secrets were protected from everyone.
Including the people closest to them.
“What did he tell you?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked down.
“He told me you were a temporary problem.””
My jaw tightened.
“He told me the marriage was already over. He said he just needed the right moment to remove you from the company.””
The words hurt.
Not because they were new.
Because they confirmed something I already suspected.
“He promised you the CEO position,” I said.
Vanessa looked up.
A small, embarrassed expression crossed her face.
“Yes.””
The answer was honest.
And somehow that made it worse.
“You believed him.””
“I did.””
“Why?””
Her eyes moved around the building.
“At first?””
She swallowed.
“Because I thought he was powerful.””
A bitter smile appeared.
“Then I realized he was just afraid.””
Before I could respond, the speakers crackled again.
The other Adrian spoke.
“You’re making this more complicated than it needs to be.””
Vanessa immediately looked upward.
“Where are you?””
No answer.
Then:
“Vanessa, you should have stayed out of this.””
Her face changed.
The fear returned.
Because she knew that tone.
The tone of a man who had stopped pretending.
“You threatened me,” she whispered.
The room went silent.
I turned toward her.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“He told me if I ever exposed him, he would destroy my career.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“He always does that.””
I looked at her.
“You know him.””
She didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“Your father trusted him.””
The words echoed.
Again.
Everything came back to Adrian.
Every path.
Every secret.
Every lie.
“How did my father die?””
The question came out before I could stop it.
Evelyn’s face changed.
Pain.
Deep and old.
“Nia…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“I deserve the truth.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Evelyn slowly walked toward the old conference room.
“Come with me.””
The conference room looked untouched.
A large wooden table.
Old photographs.
Shelves filled with files.
It felt like someone had preserved a moment in time.
Evelyn opened a hidden drawer beneath the table.
Inside was a small recording device.
My heart started racing.
“What is that?””
“Your father left it.””
She placed it on the table.
“Only one person was supposed to hear it.””
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“You.””
The device was old.
The screen flickered.
Then a voice filled the room.
My father.
I had not heard his voice in twenty years.
My knees nearly gave out.
“Nia, if you are hearing this, then something happened that I hoped would never happen.””
Tears blurred my vision.
I covered my mouth.
His voice continued.
“I need you to understand something. The company was never the most important thing I created.””
A pause.
“You were.””
I closed my eyes.
The room disappeared.
For a moment, I was a little girl again.
Sitting beside him.
Listening to him explain how computers worked.
Hearing him promise he would always protect me.
Then his voice became serious.
“But there is someone I trusted who betrayed me.””
Everyone looked at me.
Even Vanessa.
My father continued.
“Adrian Cole was like a son to me. I helped him. I gave him opportunities. I believed he would protect my family.””
My breathing became heavier.
“Then I discovered he had been secretly transferring company assets.””
Evelyn looked down.
“He wasn’t trying to build a company.””
My father’s voice continued.
“He was trying to take mine.””
The recording paused.
Then:
“If Adrian ever becomes successful, remember this. His success was built on a foundation he stole.””
I looked at my phone.
Still connected to Adrian.
He was listening.
I knew it.
“Adrian?””
No answer.
I spoke louder.
“Are you still there?””
Finally:
“Yes.””
His voice sounded empty.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Just tired.
“Why?””
A long silence.
Then:
“Because I was young.””
I felt something break inside me.
“That’s your answer?””
“I made one mistake.””
“One?””
His voice became emotional.
“Nia, you don’t understand.””
“No.””
I stepped closer to the phone.
“I don’t understand.””
“You think I wanted this?””
A bitter laugh escaped him.
“I was nobody.””
My hands shook.
“My father gave you a chance.””
“I know.””
“He trusted you.””
“I know.””
“And you betrayed him.””
Silence.
Then Adrian said:
“I loved you.””
The sentence was almost worse than an insult.
Because it was the kind of thing people said when they wanted forgiveness without earning it.
“You loved me?””
My voice became quiet.
“You knew who I was.””
“Yes.””
“You married me because of my inheritance.””
“No.””
“Then why?””
Another silence.
And then he said the one thing I never expected.
“Because I thought if I became good enough, I could finally deserve you.””
I stopped.
For one second, I didn’t know what to feel.
Anger.
Sadness.
Confusion.
Then I remembered the gala.
The microphone.
Vanessa.
His smile.
The way he looked at me like I was nothing.
“You stopped trying.””
He didn’t answer.
Because it was true.
The recording continued.
My father’s voice returned.
“Nia, there is one more thing you need to know.””
Everyone became still.
The next sentence changed everything.
“Adrian did not act alone.””
Evelyn’s face turned pale.
Vanessa looked confused.
My heart stopped.
My father continued:
“There was someone inside my family helping him.””
The recording ended.
Nobody breathed.
Then the device automatically played one final hidden file.
A new voice appeared.
A woman’s voice.
My mother.
“Adrian, if you want Nia to inherit anything, you need to make sure she never discovers the second agreement.””
I froze.
My mother.
Talking to Adrian.
Before my father died.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
“No…”
The audio continued.
Adrian’s younger voice answered:
“What if she finds out?””
My mother replied:
“Then we make sure she blames the wrong person.””
The recording stopped.
I couldn’t move.
My mother.
The woman who raised me.
The woman who told me she loved me.
Had been part of the lie.
A message appeared on my phone.
From the unknown number.
This time, it wasn’t a sentence.
It was a file.
A legal document.
The title appeared on the screen.
*SECOND TRUST AGREEMENT — BENEFICIARY CHANGE REQUEST*
And beneath it was the signature that made my blood run cold.
Not Adrian’s.
Not my mother’s.
Mine.
May you like
Signed ten years ago.
On the exact day I married him.
