Chapter 8: The Truth Adrian Buried
The silence after Adrian’s confession felt heavier than any scream.
*Because I was the reason your father was in danger.*
The words stayed between us.
I looked at Adrian.
Really looked at him.
Not the CEO.
Not the husband who betrayed me.
Not the man everyone in the world thought they knew.
I saw someone carrying a secret so heavy it had changed the way he lived.
But secrets did not erase damage.
They only explained it.
And sometimes explanations hurt more.
“What does that mean?””
My voice was barely above a whisper.
Adrian didn’t answer immediately.
He looked at the black screen where the stranger had appeared.
Then he looked at Evelyn.
Then Richard.
Everyone in the room knew something.
Everyone except me.
Again.
“I was the entry point,” Adrian said.
I frowned.
“Entry point?””
He nodded slowly.
“Your father’s enemies didn’t find him because of his company.””
He looked at me.
“They found him because of me.””
Fifteen years earlier.
Adrian had been twenty-six.
Ambitious.
Brilliant.
And desperate.
That was the part nobody wanted to admit.
People always remembered success.
They forgot desperation.
Adrian had grown up watching wealthy people walk into rooms and get everything they wanted.
He had watched people like my father create opportunities while people like him fought for a chance.
When my father offered him a position, Adrian saw it as more than a job.
He saw it as a doorway.
A way out.
But he also saw something else.
A weakness.
My father trusted people.
Adrian knew that.
And someone else knew it too.
“They approached me,” Adrian said.
“Who?””
“The group your father was investigating.””
The name still wasn’t spoken.
Like saying it would give them power.
“What did they want?””
Adrian looked down.
“Information.””
I felt sick.
“You gave it to them.””
His silence answered.
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
“You betrayed him.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
“No excuses?””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I betrayed him.””
The room became quiet.
“Why?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because I thought I was smarter than them.””
A bitter smile crossed his face.
“I thought I could take their money, give them fake information, and protect your father at the same time.””
Richard stepped forward.
“That’s not the full story.””
Adrian looked at him.
Richard’s expression hardened.
“You didn’t understand who you were dealing with.””
“No,” Adrian admitted.
“I didn’t.””
He looked at me.
“And because of that, they discovered your father knew too much.””
I walked away from him.
I needed distance.
Because standing close to Adrian made everything worse.
The anger.
The memories.
The love I hated still feeling.
“You should have told me.””
“I know.””
“Every day.””
“I know.””
“Every year.””
“I know.””
I turned.
“Do you know what it feels like to find out your entire marriage was built on secrets?””
His face changed.
Pain.
Real pain.
“I know what it feels like to live with that.””
“That’s not the same.””
“No.””
He looked at the floor.
“It isn’t.””
The answer disarmed me.
He wasn’t defending himself.
He wasn’t asking forgiveness.
He was accepting the damage.
And somehow, that made it harder.
The stranger appeared again on the main screen.
Everyone turned.
His face was calm.
Almost bored.
“You’re wasting time.””
Adrian immediately moved toward the screen.
“Who are you?””
The man smiled.
“You know exactly who I am.””
Adrian froze.
My eyes moved between them.
“You know him?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
The stranger laughed.
“That’s what he does best.””
He looked at me.
“He creates confusion.””
“Who are you?”” I demanded.
The man leaned closer.
“My name is Marcus Vale.””
Richard went pale.
Evelyn whispered:
“No.””
I noticed.
“You know him too.””
Nobody spoke.
Marcus smiled.
“Your father knew everyone eventually.””
The screen changed.
Documents appeared.
Photos.
Financial records.
Old messages.
Then one image appeared.
My father.
Standing beside Marcus.
I stepped closer.
“What is this?””
Marcus smiled.
“The beginning.””
The screen changed again.
A contract.
A partnership agreement.
My father’s signature.
Marcus’s signature.
“You see, Nia, your father was not the victim you think he was.””
My hands tightened.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying your father built an empire by making promises he couldn’t keep.””
Richard immediately shouted:
“Don’t listen to him.””
Marcus ignored him.
“He created Project Dawn because he knew he was exposed.””
I looked at Adrian.
“Is that true?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
That scared me.
“Adrian.””
He looked at me.
“There are parts of the story you don’t know.””
I laughed quietly.
“Of course there are.””
Marcus continued.
“Your father wasn’t trying to protect the world.””
The screen showed another document.
“He was trying to protect himself.””
My heart raced.
“No.””
Marcus smiled.
“Ask them.””
I looked at Evelyn.
Then Richard.
Neither spoke.
That was enough.
“Tell me.””
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
“Your father made mistakes.””
“What kind of mistakes?””
Richard answered.
“Before he became the man you knew, he made deals.””
“With who?””
Richard looked at the screen.
“With people like Marcus.””
I felt like the ground beneath me was disappearing.
My father.
The man I worshipped.
The man who taught me honesty mattered.
Had secrets too.
Maybe everyone did.
Maybe the difference was only how well they hid them.
“Why did nobody tell me?””
Evelyn whispered:
“Because your father wanted you to remember him as your father.””
Not as a businessman.
Not as a person who made mistakes.
Not as someone who hurt people.
I hated that answer.
Because part of me understood.
And part of me couldn’t forgive it.
Marcus interrupted.
“That’s why I need you, Nia.””
I looked at the screen.
“Need me for what?””
“Your father left you something.””
“I know.””
“No.””
His smile widened.
“You found the company.””
A pause.
“You found the documents.””
Another pause.
“But you haven’t found the real inheritance.””
My stomach tightened.
“What inheritance?””
Marcus leaned forward.
“The evidence.””
The room went silent.
“The evidence your father collected before he died.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“What?””
Marcus laughed.
“You didn’t know?””
For the first time, Adrian looked genuinely shocked.
Marcus continued.
“Your father hid everything in a place only Nia could access.””
I looked at the archive computer.
The words appeared:
*PROJECT DAWN FINAL PHASE*
A password request.
Then:
*BIOMETRIC CONFIRMATION REQUIRED*
The computer scanned.
My fingerprint.
My face.
Access granted.
A folder opened.
Everyone gathered around.
Inside was one file.
No title.
No description.
Just a date.
The day my father died.
I clicked it.
A video loaded.
My father appeared again.
But this time, he wasn’t alone.
Someone sat beside him.
Someone I recognized.
Someone I never expected.
My mother.
Alive.
My father looked at the camera.
“Nia, if you are watching this, then the plan worked.””
I stopped breathing.
My mother looked directly at me through the screen.
Her expression was full of sadness.
Then my father said:
“There is one person you must never trust.””
My heart pounded.
Because I already knew this was going to hurt.
He continued:
“The person who raised you.””
The video cut to my mother.
And she whispered:
“I’m sorry, Nia.””
Then the final message appeared.
*PROJECT DAWN FINAL SUBJECT: NIA CARTER*
My face went cold.
Subject.
Not owner.
Not heir.
Subject.
Adrian stepped back.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
His voice was barely audible.
“Your father didn’t create Project Dawn to protect the company.””
The room went silent.
“He created it to protect…”
A pause.
“You.””
The archive lights suddenly shut off.
A loud alarm began.
Then every screen displayed the same message.
*FINAL PHASE INITIATED.*
*IDENTITY REVEAL REQUIRED.*
A countdown appeared.
10:00.
9:59.
9:58.
Marcus’s voice came through the speakers.
“Now you’ll finally learn why everyone was willing to destroy each other for you.””
The countdown continued.
May you like
And beneath it appeared a final line.
*REVEALING NIA CARTER’S TRUE IDENTITY.*
