Chapter 7: The Daughter Who Was Never Protected

The final words echoed through the archive.

*And the worst betrayal has not happened yet.*

Nobody spoke.

The speakers went silent.

The computer screen remained black.

But the message stayed inside my head.

My father had known.

He knew people around me would fail.

He knew secrets would surface.

He knew betrayal would come.

But the question that burned through me was simple.

How much had he known?

And why did he leave me alone to discover it?

I turned toward Evelyn.

The woman who had spent the last several hours telling me she was protecting me.

The woman whose name was now connected to my father’s death.

“Start talking.””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

Everyone noticed.

Evelyn looked down.

“Nia…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to say my name like you’re worried about me.””

Her eyes filled.

“I am worried about you.””

“You had twenty years to worry about me.””

Silence.

“You had twenty years to tell me the truth.””

She looked away.

Maya moved beside me.

“Nia, maybe we should hear her out.””

I looked at her.

“I’ve been hearing everyone out my entire life.””

My voice cracked.

“And somehow, I’m always the last person to know what’s happening.””

Richard stood near the archive entrance.

For once, he didn’t interrupt.

Maybe because he knew I deserved answers.

Maybe because he knew he had his own secrets to explain.

I looked at him.

“And you.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“You knew Adrian before I met him.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my father.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my mother was hiding things.””

“Yes.””

I laughed quietly.

“Is there anyone in this room who didn’t know something about my life?””

Nobody answered.

That was the answer.

Evelyn finally sat down.

She looked older than she had before.

Not because of her age.

Because of the weight of everything she had carried.

“I didn’t kill your father.””

The words came quickly.

I stared at her.

“I didn’t ask that.””

“But you were thinking it.””

She was right.

I hated that she was right.

“Then why is your name on the report?””

She took a deep breath.

“Because I was there.””

The room became still.

“You were there the night he died?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I couldn’t.””

“Why?””

Her eyes met mine.

“Because your father made me promise.””

I froze.

“My father?””

She nodded.

“He knew the truth would destroy you if you learned it too young.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does when you know what happened.””

She looked at the old recording device.

“Your father wasn’t killed because someone wanted his company.””

A pause.

“He was killed because someone wanted what he discovered.””

“What did he discover?””

Evelyn looked at Richard.

Then at me.

“The company wasn’t just a company.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Carter Security created technology that protected financial systems around the world.””

I nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“No.””

She leaned forward.

“You don’t.””

Her voice lowered.

“Your father created something that could expose financial crimes. Hidden accounts. Illegal transfers. Corrupt networks.””

I understood.

A company that could find secrets.

A company built around revealing things people wanted hidden.

“That’s why people wanted it.””

“Yes.””

“And Adrian?””

Richard answered this time.

“Adrian knew.””

I looked at him.

“Knew what?””

“That your father had discovered something dangerous.””

“What?””

Richard hesitated.

Then:

“A network of executives and investors using corporations to hide billions.””

The room went silent.

“This wasn’t about one company.””

Richard looked at me.

“It was about power.””

My phone vibrated.

Everyone looked at it.

A message.

Unknown number.

Again.

I opened it.

This time, there was a video.

No words.

Just a file.

I pressed play.

The screen showed Adrian.

Not the Adrian from the gala.

Not the CEO.

He looked younger.

Maybe fifteen years ago.

He was sitting across from my father.

My father looked exhausted.

Adrian looked scared.

The audio began.

“Your father is going to expose them.””

Adrian’s voice.

Young.

Nervous.

My heart tightened.

My father answered:

“If I don’t, they will keep destroying innocent people.””

Adrian looked down.

“What about Nia?””

My father became quiet.

“She can never know.””

The video froze.

Then Adrian said something that made my blood run cold.

“Then we need to make sure she hates me.””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

I stared at the blank screen.

“What does that mean?””

No one answered.

I looked at Richard.

“You knew.””

He didn’t deny it.

“I knew part of it.””

“Part?””

Richard looked ashamed.

“Your father and Adrian created a plan.””

“What plan?””

“To keep you alive.””

I laughed.

A sharp, broken sound.

“By destroying my life?””

Richard didn’t respond.

Because he knew there was no good answer.

Evelyn whispered:

“Adrian was never supposed to become your enemy.””

I looked at her.

“Then why did he?””

Her eyes closed.

“Because the plan failed.””

I left the archive room.

I couldn’t breathe.

Too many secrets.

Too many versions of reality.

My entire marriage.

My father’s death.

My mother.

Adrian.

Everything I thought I understood had become something else.

I walked through the old building until I found a quiet office.

The walls were covered with photographs.

My father.

The company.

The people who built it.

And one photograph stopped me.

It was taken twenty years ago.

My father stood in the middle.

Adrian stood beside him.

But on the other side…

was me.

A younger version of myself.

Maybe fifteen years old.

I didn’t remember the photo.

I touched the frame.

Why was I there?

Behind the photograph was writing.

A note.

My father’s handwriting.

*Nia, if you ever find this, remember one thing. The person who hurts you most may be the person who saved you.*

I closed my eyes.

Adrian.

The person who humiliated me.

The person who betrayed me.

The person who might have been protecting me.

I hated that possibility.

Because it complicated everything.

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

I turned.

Adrian stood there.

Alone.

No guards.

No confidence.

No mask.

Just him.

For the first time in years, he looked like the man from our first apartment.

Tired.

Lost.

“Nia.””

I didn’t move.

“How did you get here?””

“The same way I always did.””

His voice was quiet.

“Your father trusted me.””

I looked at him.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then explain.””

He stopped a few feet away.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

“Many times.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

His eyes dropped.

“Because every time I looked at you, I remembered what I had to do.””

I shook my head.

“You keep talking like you were forced.””

“I was.””

“By who?””

He looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw real fear.

Not fear of losing the company.

Not fear of losing money.

Fear of someone else.

“They’re coming.””

The room went cold.

“Who?””

Adrian stepped closer.

“The people your father was investigating.””

I stared at him.

“You mean the people who wanted the company?””

“No.””

His voice dropped.

“The people who wanted you.””

I froze.

“What?””

Adrian looked toward the hallway.

“They know Project Dawn has been activated.””

My phone vibrated.

A new notification.

Not from the unknown number.

From the company system.

A security alert.

*UNAUTHORIZED CONTROL TRANSFER DETECTED.*

Then another message appeared.

*CEO REMOVAL PROCESS INTERRUPTED.*

I looked at Adrian.

“You stopped it.””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You stopped me from removing you.””

His silence confirmed it.

Anger returned.

“You’re still protecting yourself.””

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“I’m protecting the only person who can stop them.””

“Who?””

His eyes met mine.

And his answer made my blood run cold.

“You.””

Before I could respond, every screen in the building turned on.

A live video appeared.

A man in a dark suit sat in a room somewhere.

I had never seen him before.

But Adrian recognized him.

His face changed instantly.

“No.””

The man smiled.

“Hello, Adrian.””

Then he looked directly into the camera.

Directly at me.

“Nia Carter.””

A pause.

“You finally found your father’s inheritance.””

He leaned closer.

“Now I need you to find out what he stole from us.””

The screen changed.

A document appeared.

The title:

*PROJECT DAWN — ORIGINAL PURPOSE*

And beneath it was a sentence:

*Created to expose the people who control the world.*

Then the man smiled.

“But first…”

A pause.

“Ask Adrian why he was the one who helped your father hide the evidence.””

The screen went black.

May you like

And Adrian whispered:

“Because I was the reason your father was in danger.””
