Chapter 6: The Man Who Owned the Missing Years
The man standing in the doorway looked like a ghost from someone else’s memory.
Older.
Gray-haired.
But unmistakably alive.
Evelyn stepped backward.
Her face wasn’t just shocked.
It was terrified.
“Richard.””
The man smiled slightly.
“So you remember.””
I looked between them.
“Who is he?””
Nobody answered.
That frightened me more than the stranger himself.
Because everyone in this room had spent years hiding something from me.
And now another person had arrived carrying another piece of my life.
Richard walked slowly into the archive room.
He didn’t look like someone breaking into a hidden facility.
He looked like someone returning home.
“You’ve grown up,” he said.
I stared at him.
“Do I know you?””
His expression softened.
“You knew me before you knew Adrian.””
The words made my stomach tighten.
“What does that mean?””
Richard placed the folder on the table.
“It means your father trusted the wrong people.””
Evelyn immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Richard looked at her.
“You still protect him?””
“You don’t get to speak about loyalty.””
A strange tension filled the room.
Not between strangers.
Between people who had been fighting the same war for decades.
I looked at Maya.
She was watching everyone carefully.
She knew what I knew.
Nobody was telling the whole truth.
“Someone explain.””
My voice cut through the room.
Everyone became silent.
“I’m done standing in rooms where people discuss my life like I’m not there.””
Richard studied me.
Then he nodded.
“Your father would be proud.””
I hated that sentence.
Everyone used my father’s memory like a weapon.
“You don’t know my father.””
A shadow crossed his face.
“I knew him better than anyone.””
“Then why are you alive?””
The question surprised him.
Good.
I wanted answers.
Not sympathy.
Richard looked down.
“Because your father saved my life.””
I crossed my arms.
“And then?””
“And then I betrayed him.””
The honesty caught me off guard.
Most people spent years building lies.
Richard destroyed his in one sentence.
“What did you do?””
He opened the folder.
Inside were financial records.
Old contracts.
Photographs.
And one document with Adrian’s name.
“Before Adrian ever worked for your father, I did.””
I looked at Evelyn.
She didn’t react.
Which meant she already knew.
Richard continued.
“Your father built Carter Security with three things. Intelligence. Trust. And people.””
He touched the document.
“I was one of those people.””
“What happened?””
“I became ambitious.””
A bitter smile appeared.
“Ambition is a dangerous thing when you convince yourself you deserve more than you earned.””
The words sounded familiar.
Because they described Adrian perfectly.
Maybe that was the problem.
Maybe every person who betrayed my father followed the same path.
First they admired him.
Then they envied him.
Then they convinced themselves they deserved what belonged to him.
“What does Adrian have to do with you?””
Richard looked at the screen showing the old recording.
“Everything.””
The archive lights dimmed slightly.
The security system adjusted.
The building was still active.
Still watching.
Still protecting secrets.
Richard sat at the table.
“Twenty years ago, Adrian didn’t come to your father because he wanted a job.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He came because he wanted access.””
My hands tightened.
“No.””
Richard looked at me.
“You need to understand something, Nia. Adrian was intelligent. Extremely intelligent.””
“I know.””
“No.””
His voice became serious.
“You don’t.””
The room went quiet.
“He didn’t accidentally become successful. He studied your father. He studied his business. He studied you.””
I felt sick.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Richard looked at the trust documents.
“Because your father’s greatest asset wasn’t his company.””
A pause.
“It was his daughter.””
I looked away.
I hated hearing myself described like property.
But I understood what he meant.
My father had built everything to protect me.
And people saw that protection as an opportunity.
Richard continued.
“Adrian knew your father would never give control to someone who only wanted money.””
“So he pretended to care.””
“Yes.””
My heart hurt.
Even after everything, hearing it aloud felt different.
Because there was a part of me that still remembered the man Adrian used to be.
Or the man I thought he was.
Richard noticed my expression.
“You loved him.””
I didn’t answer.
“You still do.””
I looked at him sharply.
“That’s not your concern.””
“No.””
His voice softened.
“But it matters.””
“Why?””
“Because Adrian’s biggest mistake was believing love made you weak.””
He leaned forward.
“He forgot love is also the reason people fight harder.””
The archive computer suddenly beeped.
A new alert appeared.
*EXTERNAL ACCESS ATTEMPT DETECTED.*
Everyone looked up.
Maya moved closer to me.
“Someone is trying to get in.””
Richard stood.
“How?””
Evelyn looked toward the security panels.
“Nobody should have access.””
A second alert appeared.
*AUTHORIZED USER IDENTIFIED.*
My stomach dropped.
“Who?””
The screen displayed a name.
*ADRIAN COLE*
Nobody spoke.
Maya looked at me.
“He’s here.””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
“What?””
“He’s not trying to enter.””
He pointed at the screen.
“He’s trying to unlock something.””
“What?””
Richard looked at the hidden files.
“The final archive.””
I stared at him.
“I thought we were in the archive.””
“No.””
His face turned serious.
“This is only the first layer.””
The computer unlocked another section.
A folder appeared.
*PROJECT DAWN — NIA CARTER ACCESS ONLY*
My name.
Again.
Everything always came back to me.
I approached the computer.
“What is Project Dawn?””
Richard didn’t answer.
“Richard.””
He looked at Evelyn.
Then at me.
“Your father’s last plan.””
I opened the folder.
Inside was a video.
Created twenty years ago.
The date was three days before my father died.
I pressed play.
My father appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But smiling.
“Nia.””
My eyes immediately filled.
His voice.
Again.
“By the time you see this, you may believe many people betrayed you.””
A pause.
“You may hate them.””
I looked at Adrian’s name on the screen.
He continued.
“But before you decide who deserves your anger, you need to know the truth.””
The video changed.
A second person entered the frame.
Adrian.
Young.
Standing beside him.
My breath caught.
My father looked at him.
“Adrian has agreed to help me protect you.””
I froze.
No.
That didn’t make sense.
My father continued:
“He knows the danger better than anyone.””
Young Adrian looked directly at the camera.
And said:
“Nia, if you’re watching this, I failed.””
I stopped breathing.
Richard looked away.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
The recording continued.
“I need you to know something.””
Adrian’s younger voice shook.
“I never wanted your company.””
A pause.
“I wanted to save you.””
The video cut.
Then another file opened automatically.
A document.
A police report.
A date.
The night my father died.
And one name under suspects.
Not Adrian.
Not Richard.
Not my mother.
Someone else.
Someone I knew.
Someone who had been standing beside me my entire life.
The name appeared.
*Evelyn Carter.*
I turned slowly.
The woman who claimed to protect me looked away.
My voice barely came out.
“Why is your name on my father’s death report?””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
Because for the first time since I met her…
she looked guilty.
Then the archive door locked.
The computer displayed one final message.
*PROJECT DAWN PHASE TWO: ACTIVATED*
And beneath it:
*Only the true Carter heir may continue.*
The screen went black.
Then a voice came through the speakers.
My father’s voice.
But the message was new.
“If you are hearing this, Nia, it means the people closest to you have already failed.””
May you like
A pause.
“And the worst betrayal has not happened yet.””
