Chapter 3: The Boy Who Knew Too Much

The door opened before anyone could stop it.

Ethan Cole stood in the doorway.

But he didn’t look like the boy from the schoolyard anymore.

The arrogant smile was gone.

The confidence was gone.

For the first time since Zora had known him, Ethan looked uncertain.

His eyes moved around the office.

First to Adrian.

Then to Evelyn.

Then to the old letter sitting on the desk.

Finally, they landed on Zora.

“I guess I’m too late,” he said quietly.

Nobody answered.

Zora stared at him.

A few hours ago, he had been laughing while she struggled to breathe because he had pulled her necklace too hard.

Now he was standing in her father’s office, acting like he belonged there.

Her anger returned instantly.

“You have a strange idea of timing.””

Ethan looked down.

“I know.””

“You embarrassed me in front of everyone.””

“I know.””

“You tried to take something my mother gave me.””

His jaw tightened.

“I know.””

Zora stepped closer.

“Then why are you here?””

Ethan looked at Adrian.

“Because my father sent me.””

The room changed.

Adrian’s expression became cold.

“Your father sent you here?””

Ethan nodded.

“He knows about the letter.””

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“How?””

Ethan looked uncomfortable.

“Because he’s been looking for it for years.””

Zora watched him carefully.

“You expect us to believe that?””

“No.””

His answer surprised her.

Ethan looked at her.

“I don’t expect you to believe anything I say.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Adrian walked toward him.

“Why would Graham Cole send you?””

Ethan swallowed.

“Because he wanted to know if you found the documents.””

Zora’s eyes narrowed.

“What documents?””

Ethan looked at her.

“The ones your mother hid.””

The same words.

The same mystery.

Everyone seemed to know the rules of a game Zora had never been told she was playing.

She shook her head.

“This is ridiculous.””

She pointed between Ethan and her father.

“My entire life, I thought people ignored me because I was invisible.””

Her voice grew stronger.

“But apparently everyone was watching me.””

Nobody interrupted.

Because nobody could deny it.

Ethan looked away.

“I didn’t know.””

Zora laughed once.

A painful sound.

“You didn’t know?””

“No.””

He ran a hand through his hair.

“I knew my father hated the Bennett family. I knew there was some old argument between our families.””

He looked at the necklace.

“But I didn’t know about you.””

Zora frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then he said something she never expected.

“My father never told me your name.””

The room went still.

“He knew who I was?””

Ethan nodded slowly.

“He knew.””

Zora felt her stomach drop.

“For how long?””

“Years.””

The answer was barely a whisper.

Her eyes moved to Adrian.

“You knew they knew?””

Adrian looked away.

That was enough.

The anger she felt wasn’t explosive.

It was worse.

It was quiet.

“You let me walk through those halls every day.””

Her voice shook.

“Knowing there were people watching me?””

“I was protecting you.””

“Stop saying that.””

The words came out sharper than she intended.

“Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me.””

She touched the necklace.

“But nobody protected me from feeling like I didn’t matter.””

Adrian looked like he wanted to answer.

But no words came.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Zora.””

She looked at her.

“You need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Your mother didn’t hide your identity because she was ashamed of you.””

Evelyn glanced at Ethan.

“She hid it because she was afraid someone would use it against you.””

Zora looked at Ethan.

“And now?””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“Now my father knows.””

A heavy silence followed.

The driver moved toward the window.

“Sir.””

Adrian looked over.

“What?””

“There’s a vehicle outside.””

Everyone froze.

“What kind?”” Adrian asked.

The driver checked carefully.

“Black sedan.””

Evelyn immediately stood straighter.

“Graham.””

Zora looked between them.

“Ethan’s father?””

Nobody answered.

Because they didn’t need to.

Adrian picked up the letter.

“Ethan, you need to leave.””

Ethan shook his head.

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because he knows I’m here.””

The room became silent.

Zora stared at him.

“What?””

Ethan looked at the floor.

“When he sent me here, he didn’t send me alone.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“What did you do?””

“I didn’t know.””

Ethan looked frustrated.

“I swear, I didn’t know.””

The office door suddenly shook.

Not opened.

Just enough to make everyone look.

A knock followed.

Calm.

Controlled.

Almost polite.

“Adrian.””

The voice outside was older.

Confident.

A voice that sounded like it had spent years winning.

Graham Cole.

Zora watched her father.

The fear was back.

Not panic.

Not weakness.

Fear from someone who knew exactly what kind of person stood outside.

“Open the door,” Graham called.

Nobody moved.

Then he laughed softly.

“You know I will come in eventually.””

Zora looked at Ethan.

“You knew this would happen.””

His face tightened.

“No.””

“Then why are you helping us?””

Ethan didn’t answer immediately.

When he finally spoke, his voice was lower.

“Because I found something.””

“What?””

He reached into his jacket.

Zora immediately stepped back.

The driver moved forward.

“It’s okay,” Ethan said.

He slowly pulled out a folded document.

“I found this in my father’s office.””

Adrian stared.

“What is that?””

Ethan handed it over.

Adrian unfolded it.

His face changed.

Zora noticed immediately.

“What?””

Her father didn’t respond.

“Dad.””

He looked at her.

“It’s a copy of the original agreement.””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Let me see.””

She read the paper.

Then she went pale.

“No.””

Zora looked between them.

“What does it say?””

Nobody answered.

She took the document herself.

Her eyes moved across the page.

At first, the words meant nothing.

Legal terms.

Names.

Dates.

Then she saw it.

The signature.

Her mother’s.

And underneath it…

Graham Cole’s.

But there was something else.

A handwritten note at the bottom.

Something added years later.

Something that made her hands shake.

“What is this?””

Adrian looked at the note.

“It wasn’t supposed to be there.””

Zora read the words aloud.

“‘If anything happens to me, Zora must never be told that Adrian Bennett is not her biological father.’”

The world stopped.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Zora looked up slowly.

“What?””

Her father closed his eyes.

Ethan looked shocked.

Even Evelyn seemed unable to speak.

The door shook again.

This time harder.

Graham’s voice came from outside.

“Adrian.””

A pause.

“Open this door.””

Zora’s fingers loosened.

The paper fell slightly.

Her entire life rearranged itself in one sentence.

Her father.

The man who raised her.

The man she loved.

The man she trusted.

Maybe he wasn’t her father by blood.

She looked at Adrian.

And whispered:

May you like

“Who is my real father?””

For the first time, Adrian Bennett had no answer.
