Chapter 4: The Truth Buried Beneath Westbridge

The question stayed in the room.

“Who is my real father?””

Zora heard her own voice.

But it didn’t sound like hers.

It sounded like someone else.

Someone standing far away, watching her life fall apart.

Adrian Bennett stared at her.

For years, he had been the person who always knew what to say.

When she had nightmares as a child, he knew how to calm her.

When she came home crying after her first day at a new school, he knew how to make her laugh.

When she asked why other children had mothers and she only had memories, he always had an answer.

But now?

Nothing.

No explanation.

No comforting words.

Just silence.

And that silence hurt more than any truth could have.

“Dad.””

The word came out softer than she expected.

Adrian looked at her.

His eyes were filled with something she had never seen before.

Regret.

“Zora…”

She stepped back.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

“Please don’t say you did it to protect me.””

His expression broke slightly.

Because he knew exactly what she was going to say.

“You don’t get to protect me from my own life.””

A heavy knock came from the office door.

Everyone turned.

Graham Cole was still outside.

Waiting.

Listening.

The driver moved closer.

“Sir, we need to decide now.””

Adrian didn’t look away from Zora.

“No.””

The driver hesitated.

“Sir?””

“No more hiding.””

The words surprised everyone.

Adrian walked toward the desk.

He picked up the old letter.

Then the photograph.

Then the agreement Ethan had brought.

He placed everything together.

“Zora deserves the truth.””

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

“It’s taken you long enough.””

Adrian ignored the comment.

He looked at Zora.

“Your mother’s name was Clara Bennett.””

Zora nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You know the name everyone remembers.””

He placed the photograph down.

“You don’t know the woman she really was.””

Zora said nothing.

“She was brilliant.””

A faint smile appeared on his face.

“She could walk into a room full of people twice her age and make them listen.””

For a moment, Zora saw something she rarely saw.

Her father remembering.

Not grieving.

Remembering.

“She was also stubborn,” Adrian continued.

Zora almost smiled.

“That sounds familiar.””

Adrian looked at her.

“It is.””

The small moment disappeared quickly.

“Clara discovered something about Westbridge.””

He tapped the agreement.

“When this school was created, it wasn’t just a school.””

Zora frowned.

“What was it?””

“A trust.””

Evelyn nodded.

“A family trust.””

Adrian continued.

“The Bennett family owned the land. The Cole family provided the funding. Together, they built Westbridge.””

Zora looked at Ethan.

“So why are our families enemies?””

Ethan looked uncomfortable.

“Because my father believes your family took everything.””

Adrian’s face hardened.

“Because your father changed the agreement.””

Ethan looked at him.

“What?””

Graham’s son looked genuinely shocked.

Adrian continued.

“Your father tried to rewrite ownership documents. He wanted complete control.””

Ethan shook his head.

“My father told me the opposite.””

“Of course he did.””

The words came from Evelyn.

“He spent years creating his own version of history.””

Zora looked at the document again.

“And my mother found out?””

Adrian nodded.

“She found evidence.””

“What evidence?””

He looked at the letter.

“The original documents.””

Zora’s eyes widened.

“The ones that prove ownership?””

“Yes.””

“Where are they?””

Nobody answered.

That was the problem.

The documents were still missing.

The reason everyone was searching.

The reason Graham Cole had come.

The reason her mother disappeared.

A knock interrupted them again.

This time louder.

“Adrian!””

Graham’s voice was no longer patient.

“I know you have the documents.””

Zora looked at Ethan.

“Your father thinks they’re here?””

Ethan nodded.

“He believes the Bennetts hid them.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Did he tell you why?””

Ethan shook his head.

“No.””

“Because he knows if those documents are found, he loses everything.””

The office fell quiet.

Then Ethan said something unexpected.

“My father is afraid of your mother.””

Everyone looked at him.

Zora frowned.

“What?””

Ethan swallowed.

“He never says her name.””

“Why?””

“Because every time someone mentions Clara Bennett, he gets angry.””

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“That’s because Clara knew the truth.””

Zora looked at her.

“What truth?””

Evelyn glanced at Adrian.

“You tell her.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

Then he spoke.

“Your mother was the rightful owner of Westbridge.””

Zora stared.

“What?””

“The original agreement named her as the successor.””

“But why?””

“Because both families agreed that the next generation would inherit the school.””

He looked at her.

“You.””

Zora shook her head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Your mother believed Westbridge should belong to someone who cared about the students, not someone who saw it as a business.””

Zora thought about the schoolyard.

The students.

The teachers.

The library.

The younger kids she helped.

Suddenly, everything felt connected.

“You knew.””

Adrian nodded.

“You knew I was the heir.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me attend school like everyone else.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His answer came immediately.

“Because Clara wanted that.””

Zora looked at him.

“She wanted me to be normal.””

“She wanted you to know what kind of person you were without the weight of a name.””

That hurt.

Because a part of Zora understood.

Her mother hadn’t hidden her because she didn’t love her.

She had hidden her because she did.

But another part of Zora was still angry.

Because love could still hurt.

The office lights flickered.

Everyone stopped.

The driver looked toward the hallway.

“Power issue?””

“No,” Adrian said.

His expression changed.

“Not here.””

The door handle moved.

Again.

But this time, someone wasn’t knocking.

Someone was trying to open it.

The driver immediately stepped in front of Zora.

“Stay behind me.””

Ethan moved too.

Zora noticed.

“Why are you helping me?””

He looked at her.

Because despite everything, he still looked like the same boy from the schoolyard.

A boy who had made a terrible mistake.

But maybe not a terrible person.

“Because I was wrong about you.””

The door lock clicked.

Once.

Twice.

Someone outside was forcing it.

Adrian grabbed the documents.

“Ethan.””

He looked over.

“If your father gets those papers, what happens?””

Ethan’s face turned serious.

“He owns Westbridge.””

“And Zora?””

Ethan looked at her.

“He’ll make sure she disappears from the story.””

The words hit hard.

Before anyone could respond, the door burst open.

Two men entered.

Behind them stood Graham Cole.

He was older than Zora expected.

Gray hair.

Perfect suit.

Calm eyes.

The kind of person who never needed to raise his voice.

Because people already listened.

His eyes moved around the room.

Then stopped on Zora.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Finally, he smiled.

“Clara’s daughter.””

Zora felt a chill.

“You know who I am.””

Graham looked at the necklace around her neck.

“I’ve always known.””

The room froze.

Zora stared.

“Then why did you let me believe I was nobody?””

Graham’s smile disappeared.

“Because your mother made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

He stepped closer.

“Trusting the wrong people.””

Adrian moved forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Graham ignored him.

His eyes stayed on Zora.

“Your mother left you something.””

Zora tightened her grip on the necklace.

“What?””

Graham smiled faintly.

“The truth.””

A pause.

“And the truth is…”

He looked at Adrian.

“…your father has been lying to you since the day you were born.””

Zora looked between them.

Her heart pounding.

Because she knew one thing.

Only one of them could be telling the truth.

And the next words would decide who she could trust.

Graham reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

One Zora recognized immediately.

May you like

Because written on the front were three words.

*For my daughter.*
