Chapter 8: The Recording That Changed Everything

Nobody touched their phone.

Nobody wanted to.

The title on the screen felt like a threat.

*THE NIGHT CLARA DISAPPEARED.*

And underneath:

*Recorded by Adrian Bennett.*

Zora looked at her father.

The room seemed to shrink around them.

“You recorded it?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

That was all she needed.

Her chest tightened.

“Dad.””

His eyes closed.

“Zora…”

“No.””

She took a step back.

“Not again.””

The disappointment in her voice hurt him more than anger would have.

“Please understand—”

“I’m tired of understanding.””

Her voice shook.

“I have spent my entire life understanding everyone else.””

She looked at Graham.

“His family.””

Then at Evelyn.

“Her secrets.””

Then back at Adrian.

“Your choices.””

Her fingers tightened around her phone.

“But nobody ever tried to understand me.””

Nobody spoke.

The driver looked at Adrian.

“Sir, should we play it?””

Adrian stared at the screen.

Then slowly nodded.

“Yes.””

Ethan pressed the file.

The video loaded.

The first few seconds showed darkness.

Then the image appeared.

A small room.

An old office.

Dusty shelves.

A broken lamp in the corner.

Zora immediately recognized the place.

“The old administration building.””

Adrian nodded.

“That’s where I met Clara.””

The camera angle was strange.

Like someone had hidden it.

A clock appeared in the corner.

The timestamp showed twelve years earlier.

Then Clara walked into the room.

Young.

Alive.

Angry.

Zora stopped breathing.

Her mother looked exactly like the memory she carried.

But this time, she wasn’t smiling.

She was fighting.

A younger Adrian entered seconds later.

The sight was painful.

Seeing him younger.

Seeing them together.

Seeing a life before everything fell apart.

Clara turned.

“You came.””

Adrian’s younger voice answered.

“Of course I came.””

“You don’t sound happy.””

“I’m confused.””

Clara looked at him.

“You should be angry at me.””

“Why?””

“Because I found something.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“What?””

Clara reached into her bag.

She pulled out a folder.

“The original agreement.””

The room went silent.

Even Graham leaned closer.

On the video, Adrian looked shocked.

“You found it?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“Somewhere Graham never thought to look.””

Zora watched carefully.

Her mother looked afraid.

Not nervous.

Afraid.

“What did you find?”” Adrian asked.

Clara opened the folder.

“Proof that the Cole family has been changing the records for years.””

Adrian shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Clara’s voice was firm.

“It’s exactly what happened.””

She pulled out documents.

“Financial transfers.””

“Fake ownership reports.””

“Hidden contracts.””

The younger Adrian looked through them.

His face changed.

“What are you going to do?””

Clara looked at him.

“I’m going to expose him.””

The video paused briefly.

Then continued.

Adrian’s younger voice sounded worried.

“You know what happens if you do that.””

“Yes.””

“Graham won’t forgive you.””

Clara smiled sadly.

“I’m not doing this because it’s safe.””

She touched the folder.

“I’m doing it because someone has to.””

Zora felt tears forming.

Because she finally understood her mother.

Clara wasn’t someone who ran away.

She was someone who stood in front of danger.

Then the video changed.

The door opened.

Both Clara and Adrian turned.

A shadow appeared.

The camera couldn’t capture the person’s face.

But Zora saw Adrian’s reaction.

Fear.

“Who is that?”” Ethan whispered.

Nobody answered.

The person stepped closer.

A voice filled the room.

“Give me the documents.””

Graham.

Everyone recognized it.

Zora looked at Graham.

His face was pale.

The video continued.

Clara stood up.

“No.””

Graham’s voice became colder.

“You don’t understand what you’re risking.””

“I understand perfectly.””

“You’re going to destroy both families.””

“No.””

Clara shook her head.

“I’m going to stop you from destroying them.””

The person moved closer.

Adrian stepped between them.

“Graham, stop.””

A long silence.

Then Graham said something that made Zora’s blood run cold.

“You still don’t know, do you?””

Adrian frowned.

“Know what?””

Graham laughed quietly.

“Clara never told you.””

The video froze for a moment.

Then continued.

“What?””

Graham looked toward Clara.

“She never told you who Zora’s biological father is.””

The room went silent.

Zora grabbed the edge of the desk.

Everyone looked at the screen.

Clara’s expression changed.

Not surprise.

Fear.

Adrian looked at her.

“What is he talking about?””

Clara didn’t answer.

The younger Adrian stepped back.

“Clara?””

The silence said everything.

Zora felt like she couldn’t breathe.

Even after all the secrets.

Even after all the revelations.

This was different.

Because this was the moment her life changed.

On the screen, Adrian whispered:

“Is it true?””

Clara looked at him.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

The same words.

Again.

Always protection.

Always secrets.

Adrian’s voice broke.

“Who is he?””

The camera moved slightly.

Then Graham spoke.

“He’s closer than you think.””

Everyone in the room turned.

Slowly.

Toward Graham.

Zora stared.

“No.””

Graham looked away.

The video continued.

Clara looked furious.

“Don’t do this.””

Graham’s voice became softer.

“You should have told him.””

Adrian looked between them.

“What is happening?””

Clara whispered:

“Adrian…”

The video cut.

Static filled the screen.

Everyone froze.

“Is that it?”” Ethan asked.

“No,” the driver said.

“There’s more.””

He checked the file.

A second clip appeared.

The title:

*AFTER THE ARGUMENT.*

Nobody spoke.

Zora looked at Adrian.

“Do we watch it?””

He didn’t answer.

She already knew.

“Yes.””

The second video began.

This time, the camera showed the hallway outside the office.

The argument had ended.

Clara walked out first.

She was holding the folder.

Then Adrian followed.

They were speaking quietly.

The audio was unclear.

Then Graham appeared.

He entered the hallway.

The three of them stood there.

Zora watched.

Because she knew this was the moment.

The moment her mother disappeared.

Graham reached for the folder.

Clara pulled it away.

Then something happened.

Something nobody expected.

Adrian stepped between them.

Protecting Clara.

Protecting the documents.

Protecting the truth.

Graham looked angry.

Then he said:

“You have no idea what you’ve done, Adrian.””

The video showed Adrian replying.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

Graham smiled.

A cold smile.

“Then you’ll lose everything.””

The camera shook.

A loud sound came from somewhere.

Then the screen went black.

For several seconds, there was nothing.

Then the audio returned.

Only audio.

Clara’s voice.

Faint.

Terrified.

“Zora…”

Everyone froze.

Her mother’s voice continued.

“If you’re hearing this…”

A pause.

“Please forgive me.””

Zora covered her mouth.

“I tried.””

Another pause.

“I tried to keep you safe.””

The audio crackled.

Then came the final sentence.

The sentence that made Adrian collapse into his chair.

“The person who betrayed me…”

Static.

Then:

“…was not Graham.””

The room went silent.

Zora stared.

“Then who?””

The recording ended.

No answer.

No explanation.

Only silence.

Then every light in the office turned off.

A second later, the emergency lights came on.

The driver immediately moved.

“Everyone stay together.””

Ethan looked toward the door.

“What happened?””

Adrian stood slowly.

His face had lost all color.

“Someone accessed the building system.””

Zora looked at him.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

Then a voice came through the office speakers.

A voice everyone recognized.

But one person reacted differently.

Adrian.

Because he knew exactly who it was.

The voice said:

“Zora.””

She froze.

“Come to the records room.””

A pause.

“And come alone.””

The speaker clicked.

The voice disappeared.

Zora looked at Adrian.

“Who was that?””

He didn’t respond.

She stepped closer.

“Dad.””

His eyes filled with fear.

May you like

Because the person who had just spoken…

Was supposed to be dead.
