Chapter 6: The Message Clara Left Behind
Nobody moved.
Nobody even breathed.
The image on Ethan’s phone flickered slightly, but the woman on the screen remained clear enough.
Clara Bennett.
Zora had spent twelve years trying to remember her mother’s face.
Not the photographs.
Not the faded images in old albums.
The real face.
The way she smiled.
The way she looked when she was about to say something important.
And now she was here.
Speaking directly to her.
“If you are watching this…”
Clara’s eyes moved toward the camera.
“…then Graham Cole has found my daughter.””
Zora felt her fingers go cold.
She didn’t realize she had stepped closer until Ethan lowered the phone slightly.
“No,” Zora whispered.
Ethan looked at her.
“What?””
“Keep playing.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“But don’t stop.””
He nodded.
The room became silent again.
On the screen, Clara took a deep breath.
“I wish I could have been there to tell you this myself.””
Her voice cracked.
“But if you’re seeing this, then I failed.””
Zora covered her mouth.
“No.””
The word escaped before she could stop it.
She wasn’t talking to anyone in the room.
She was talking to the woman on the screen.
Clara continued.
“Before anything else, I need you to know that I loved you every second I was away.””
Zora closed her eyes.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
Not because she was weak.
Because those were the words she had waited her entire life to hear.
“I know you will wonder why I left.””
The video paused for a second.
Clara looked away from the camera.
Like she was gathering the courage to say something she had been carrying alone.
“I left because someone I trusted betrayed our family.””
Everyone in the room looked at Graham.
His face was unreadable.
But his hands were clenched.
Clara continued.
“And I need you to understand something about Adrian.””
Zora looked at her father.
The man who had raised her.
The man who had hidden things from her.
“He was not the man who hurt me.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
A painful expression crossed his face.
“He was the man who protected you.””
Zora looked down.
The anger inside her didn’t disappear.
But it changed.
Because the truth was more complicated than she wanted.
Nobody in this room was completely innocent.
But maybe some people were guilty of hiding things because they were afraid.
Not because they wanted to hurt her.
The video continued.
“I know there will be questions about your biological father.””
Zora froze.
Graham’s expression shifted.
“There will be people who tell you that blood is everything.””
Clara looked directly into the camera.
“It is not.””
Zora’s heart tightened.
“Family is the person who stays when things become difficult.””
Her mother smiled sadly.
“Adrian stayed.””
The room was completely still.
Then Clara said the words nobody expected.
“But the person who shares your blood is not the enemy either.””
Zora frowned.
Everyone looked confused.
Even Adrian.
“What does that mean?”” Zora whispered.
The video continued.
“Your biological father made terrible choices.””
Graham’s jaw tightened.
“But he was manipulated by something bigger than greed.””
The room changed.
Zora looked at Graham.
“What?””
Clara’s voice became softer.
“The truth about Westbridge is not just about ownership.””
She looked away.
“It is about a promise.””
The screen flickered.
Then Clara continued.
“When our families created Westbridge, they agreed the school would belong to the students.””
Zora listened carefully.
“Not the Bennetts.””
“Not the Coles.””
“Not anyone who wanted power.””
Her mother’s eyes became serious.
“The school was built to give people opportunities they would never have otherwise.””
Zora thought about the library.
The younger students.
The scholarship programs.
The teachers who stayed late because they cared.
She understood.
That was why her mother loved the school.
Not because of the buildings.
Because of the people inside.
Clara continued.
“Years later, someone tried to change that.””
Graham looked away.
“They wanted Westbridge to become something it was never meant to be.””
Zora looked at him.
“You.””
Graham finally spoke.
“That video is edited.””
Everyone turned.
He stepped forward.
“You have no idea what happened.””
Ethan looked at him.
“Then why are you scared?””
The question landed.
Hard.
Graham’s eyes moved to his son.
“You think you understand the world now?””
“No.””
Ethan shook his head.
“I think I finally stopped believing everything you told me.””
For the first time, Zora saw the damage between them.
Not just an enemy and a victim.
A father and a son.
A relationship breaking apart.
The video continued.
Clara’s expression changed.
“There is one thing I never told Zora.””
Zora stared.
“What?””
Her mother looked into the camera.
“Your necklace contains the final key.””
Everyone looked at Zora.
Her hand immediately went to the silver pendant.
“The key to what?”” she whispered.
Clara continued.
“The documents proving the original agreement are hidden somewhere only Zora can access.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Only her?””
Clara nodded on the screen.
“Because the agreement was written for the next generation.””
Zora stared at the necklace.
All these years.
Everyone had thought it was just jewelry.
A memory.
But it was something else.
A message.
A promise.
A responsibility.
Then Clara said something that made Zora’s blood run cold.
“However, Zora must be careful.””
The room became tense.
“Because the person who finds the documents first will control Westbridge.””
Zora frowned.
“Why?””
Her mother looked terrified.
“Because the documents contain more than ownership.””
A pause.
“They contain the names of everyone who helped hide the truth.””
The video suddenly glitched.
Everyone leaned closer.
Clara’s voice became distorted.
“If Graham finds them—”
Static.
The screen froze.
Then restarted.
Ethan checked the phone.
“What happened?””
The video jumped forward.
Clara was still there.
But the next words were different.
“If Adrian finds them…”
Zora’s heart stopped.
Everyone looked at Adrian.
Her father stepped back.
“No.””
The video continued.
“If Adrian finds them, he will have to make the choice he avoided twelve years ago.””
Zora stared.
“What choice?””
Her mother looked directly at the camera.
“To tell Zora who she really is.””
The screen went black.
Silence.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody knew what to say.
Then the phone buzzed.
Ethan looked down.
His face changed.
“What?””
Zora noticed.
“What is it?””
He turned the screen around.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*You should have never shown her the video.*
A second message arrived.
Then a third.
Ethan read it aloud.
“Leave Westbridge before midnight…”
His voice stopped.
Zora looked at him.
“What?””
He swallowed.
The final message appeared.
*Or everyone will learn what Clara Bennett did before she disappeared.*
The room went cold.
Evelyn looked at Adrian.
“What did Clara do?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
Zora stared at him.
“Dad.””
His silence was immediate.
And that silence told her something.
There was still one secret.
One secret bigger than the necklace.
Bigger than the letter.
Bigger than Westbridge.
Zora stepped closer.
“What happened before my mother disappeared?””
Adrian looked at her.
His eyes filled with pain.
Then he whispered:
“Your mother was blamed for a crime she didn’t commit.””
May you like
A pause.
“And I was the reason nobody believed her.””
