Chapter 2: The Video They Never Expected
The pool deck had never felt so quiet.
Naomi stood frozen beside Lane Four, listening to the faint hum of the lights above her. A few minutes earlier, everyone had been watching her like she was the problem.
Now nobody knew where to look.
Callie’s confidence had cracked.
Tyler kept glancing toward the exit.
Mason’s usual smug expression was gone completely.
Coach Reynolds held the phone in his hand, the screen still showing the paused security footage.
“The person who planted the envelope made one mistake,” he repeated.
Naomi swallowed.
“What mistake?””
Coach Reynolds looked at the three students standing across from him.
“They forgot the camera wasn’t only facing the locker area.””
Callie’s face went pale.
For the first time since Naomi had known her, she looked scared.
Not embarrassed.
Not angry.
Scared.
“Coach, you’re making this a bigger deal than it is,” Callie said quickly.
Coach Reynolds didn’t respond.
He simply pressed play.
Everyone watched the small screen.
The video showed the hallway outside the locker rooms.
The date appeared in the corner.
Three weeks earlier.
The day of the fundraiser.
Naomi remembered every detail of that day.
The excitement.
The decorations.
The tables covered with donation boxes.
The entire swim team had spent hours organizing everything. The fundraiser was supposed to help pay for new equipment and travel costs for upcoming competitions.
Naomi had been in charge of collecting receipts.
She had been proud of that responsibility.
Until the money disappeared.
The video showed Naomi walking into the locker room, carrying her bag.
Then the screen changed.
A few minutes later, Callie appeared.
Tyler followed behind her.
Mason looked around before entering.
Naomi’s hands tightened.
She had suspected them.
But suspicion was different from proof.
Proof was a weapon.
And now Coach Reynolds had it.
The three students watched silently as the footage continued.
Callie walked directly to Naomi’s locker.
Tyler stood nearby, blocking the hallway.
Mason pulled something from his pocket.
An envelope.
The same envelope that had nearly ruined Naomi’s life.
Naomi felt her stomach drop.
Even though she knew what was coming, seeing it happen made everything feel real.
Callie opened Naomi’s locker.
Mason handed her the envelope.
She placed it inside.
Then she smiled.
A cold, careless smile.
The kind of smile someone wore when they believed they had already won.
Callie suddenly stepped toward Coach Reynolds.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
“That video doesn’t prove anything.””
Coach Reynolds stared at her.
“It shows you placing stolen money inside another student’s bag.””
“No,” Callie said quickly.
“It shows me putting an envelope there. You don’t know what was inside.””
Naomi looked at her.
“You knew exactly what was inside.””
Callie turned.
For a moment, they just stared at each other.
Naomi remembered all the times she had stayed quiet.
All the times she had wondered if maybe she was the reason people disliked her.
Maybe she was too serious.
Maybe she was too different.
Maybe she should have tried harder to fit in.
But now she understood something.
Some people didn’t hate you because you did something wrong.
Sometimes they hated you because they couldn’t control you.
Tyler stepped forward.
“Coach, she’s twisting everything.””
Coach Reynolds raised an eyebrow.
“Who is?””
Tyler stopped.
“The footage shows all three of you.””
Mason looked at Callie.
“Tell him.””
Callie snapped her head toward him.
“Tell him what?””
“That it wasn’t supposed to go this far.””
The words slipped out before he could stop them.
Everyone went silent.
Callie’s eyes widened.
“Mason.””
But it was too late.
Coach Reynolds stepped closer.
“What wasn’t supposed to go this far?””
Mason looked nervous.
“I didn’t mean—”
“You were involved,” Naomi said quietly.
Mason looked at her.
She wasn’t angry.
That somehow made it worse.
“You knew.””
He looked away.
Callie crossed her arms.
“Don’t act innocent, Mason. You wanted her gone too.””
Naomi felt a sharp pain in her chest.
There it was.
The truth.
Not just a prank.
Not just bullying.
A plan.
A deliberate attempt to destroy her.
Coach Reynolds shook his head.
“I’m calling the principal.””
Callie’s expression changed instantly.
“No.””
The word came out almost like a whisper.
Coach Reynolds looked at her.
“No?””
Callie forced herself to stand taller.
“You don’t understand.””
“I understand enough.””
“No, you don’t.””
Her voice cracked slightly.
“My entire future is tied to this team.””
Naomi almost laughed.
Almost.
Because for months, Callie had acted like she was untouchable.
Like rules didn’t apply to her.
Like everyone else existed only to make her look better.
Now, standing beside the pool with wet hair and a ruined reputation, she finally looked human.
But Naomi knew better than anyone.
Feeling afraid didn’t always mean someone had changed.
Sometimes it only meant they had been caught.
Coach Reynolds turned toward Naomi.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words surprised her.
Not because she didn’t deserve an apology.
Because she had stopped expecting one.
“I should have investigated sooner,” he continued.
“When the money went missing, I should have looked deeper.””
Naomi looked down.
“It’s okay.””
But it wasn’t.
She knew that.
Her teammates knew that.
Everyone knew that.
A few seconds later, Coach Reynolds walked toward the office.
“I’ll contact the principal and your parents. Nobody leaves until this is handled.””
Callie watched him walk away.
Then she turned to Naomi.
The fear disappeared.
Something colder replaced it.
“You think you won?””
Naomi looked at her.
“No.””
Callie smiled slightly.
“Good.””
Naomi frowned.
“Why?””
“Because you still don’t know everything.””
The words sent a chill through Naomi.
Tyler looked at Callie.
“What are you doing?””
Callie ignored him.
She stepped closer to Naomi.
“You really think I planned this alone?””
Naomi said nothing.
Callie lowered her voice.
“You were so focused on me that you never noticed who was actually helping.””
Naomi felt her heartbeat change.
“Who?””
Callie smiled.
For the first time all afternoon, she looked confident again.
“I think you’ll find out soon enough.””
Before Naomi could answer, Coach Reynolds returned from the office.
But something was different.
His face had changed.
He was holding another phone.
Not his.
A student’s phone.
Everyone looked at him.
“Whose is that?”” Naomi asked.
Coach Reynolds didn’t answer immediately.
He looked directly at her.
Then he said:
“This was found hidden behind the equipment storage room.””
Naomi stared.
“Why are you showing me?””
Coach Reynolds hesitated.
Because whatever was on that phone clearly bothered him.
“I think you need to see the last message sent from it.””
Callie looked away.
Tyler went completely still.
Mason whispered:
“No way.””
Naomi slowly stepped forward.
Coach Reynolds unlocked the screen.
A message appeared.
One name was displayed at the top.
A name Naomi knew.
A name that made her feel like the floor beneath her had disappeared.
May you like
Because the person who had helped Callie destroy her wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone who had been standing beside Naomi the entire time.
