Chapter 6: The Person Nobody Suspected
Nobody moved.
The words echoed around the pool deck.
*The person who betrayed your father was standing beside him the entire time.*
Naomi stared at Daniel Morgan.
Then at Callie.
Then at Emma.
Her mind raced through every possibility.
But every path led to the same terrifying question.
Who?
Daniel stepped farther into the room.
Coach Reynolds immediately moved between him and the students.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I know.””
“Then leave.””
“I can’t.””
His voice was calm.
Too calm for someone who had just revealed a secret that could destroy multiple families.
Naomi held up the photograph.
“Explain this.””
Daniel looked at the picture.
The edges were worn.
The colors had faded.
But the people in it were clear.
Her father stood on one side.
Emma’s father stood on the other.
And Daniel stood between them.
“We were trying to expose something bigger than any of us understood.””
Naomi’s fingers tightened around the photograph.
“My father trusted you?””
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.””
“Then where were you?””
The question came out sharper than she expected.
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
And that bothered her.
Because people who told the truth usually didn’t need time to find it.
“I made a mistake.””
Naomi laughed quietly.
“A mistake?””
Her voice cracked.
“My father disappeared.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
The entire pool deck went silent.
“You don’t know what it was like.””
Naomi stepped closer.
“You don’t know what it feels like to be twelve years old and wonder if your own father decided you weren’t worth coming back to.””
Daniel looked away.
And for a moment, Naomi saw something.
Regret.
Real regret.
“I know I can’t change what happened.””
“Then tell me what happened.””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“Your father discovered that money was being moved through fake charity accounts. He thought he could expose it by going public.””
Coach Reynolds nodded.
“That explains the fundraiser.””
Daniel looked at him.
“The fundraiser was one of many.””
Naomi frowned.
“Then why target me?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Because someone wanted to send a message.””
A chill moved through her.
“By framing me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because your father hid the final piece of evidence before he disappeared.””
Naomi stared.
“What evidence?””
Daniel looked at her.
“That’s what everyone has been searching for.””
The pool lights flickered.
Nobody spoke.
Then Callie suddenly laughed.
Everyone turned.
“This is insane.””
Daniel looked at her.
Callie shook her head.
“You’re all actually believing him?””
Naomi watched her carefully.
Callie was scared.
But she was trying to hide it.
Again.
“You disappeared for years,” Callie said.
“You expect us to trust you now?””
Daniel looked at his niece.
“I don’t expect you to trust me.””
Callie’s face tightened.
“Good.””
“But I expect you to remember.””
The confidence disappeared from her face.
“What?””
Daniel stepped closer.
“You were there.””
Callie went completely still.
Naomi looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Callie’s voice became defensive.
“Nothing.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You were younger. You didn’t understand what you saw.””
Callie looked at him.
“Stop talking.””
Naomi’s heart started beating faster.
“What did she see?””
Nobody answered.
Then Emma whispered:
“Callie knew.””
Everyone turned.
Callie looked furious.
“Emma.””
“No.””
Emma stepped forward.
“I’m done protecting everyone.””
Naomi looked at her.
“Protecting who?””
Emma’s eyes filled with tears.
“Everyone.””
She looked at Callie.
“Your family.””
Then at Daniel.
“And mine.””
Naomi felt overwhelmed.
Too many secrets.
Too many people who had known the truth while she lived inside a lie.
“Emma,” Naomi said quietly.
“How much do you know?””
Emma swallowed.
“I know that the night your father disappeared, Callie’s father met with him.””
Naomi froze.
“What?””
Callie immediately shook her head.
“That’s not true.””
Emma continued.
“I saw the car.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You were there?””
Emma nodded.
“I followed my dad because I was worried.””
She looked at Naomi.
“I saw your father get into a car.””
Naomi whispered:
“Whose car?””
Emma looked at Callie.
“His.””
Callie stepped back.
“No.””
Naomi turned toward her.
“Your father?””
Callie’s eyes filled with anger.
“You don’t know anything about my father.””
“Then tell me.””
Callie opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because sometimes silence was the closest thing to an answer.
Daniel spoke quietly.
“Callie’s father wasn’t just involved.””
Everyone looked at him.
“He was the person your father was trying to expose.””
Naomi felt sick.
All this time.
The person whose family everyone admired.
The person whose name was attached to donations and community events.
Was the same person her father had been investigating.
Coach Reynolds looked at Daniel.
“Then why did Callie help frame Naomi?””
Daniel’s eyes moved to Callie.
“That’s what I want to know.””
Callie looked away.
“I didn’t know everything.””
Naomi stared.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Callie’s expression changed.
Because for the first time, she wasn’t angry.
She looked exhausted.
“Because I was trying to fix it.””
Everyone looked surprised.
Naomi almost laughed.
“Fix it?””
Callie nodded.
“I found out my father was hiding things.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“What things?””
Callie hesitated.
“Documents.””
Naomi frowned.
“What documents?””
Callie looked at her.
“The ones your father found.””
The room went silent.
Naomi stepped closer.
“You had them?””
“No.””
“Then who did?””
Callie looked toward the hallway.
And everyone followed her eyes.
The empty hallway.
The dark entrance.
The place where someone had been standing earlier.
Callie whispered:
“Emma’s father.””
Emma froze.
“What?””
Callie continued.
“After my father disappeared, I found out someone had taken the documents.””
Daniel stared.
“Your father didn’t disappear.””
Callie looked at him.
“What?””
“He went into hiding.””
The words hit harder than expected.
Naomi looked confused.
“You mean he’s alive?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
And that silence was terrifying.
Callie’s face changed.
“You know where he is?””
Daniel looked down.
“I know where he was.””
Naomi felt like every answer created three more questions.
Then Coach Reynolds’ phone buzzed.
Again.
Everyone flinched.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What is it?”” Naomi asked.
He slowly turned the phone around.
A message.
From the same unknown number.
*Stop looking for the evidence.*
A second message appeared.
*Or you’ll lose someone else.*
Naomi felt cold.
Then a third message appeared.
One word.
A name.
*Emma.*
Emma gasped.
Her phone suddenly rang.
Everyone looked at it.
She stared at the screen.
Her face turned white.
Naomi saw the name calling.
And she knew something was wrong.
Because the person calling Emma was someone who should not have been able to call anyone.
Someone who had been missing for seven years.
Emma whispered:
“My father…”
The phone continued ringing.
Nobody moved.
Then Daniel said quietly:
“Don’t answer.””
Emma looked at him.
“Why?””
Daniel’s face became serious.
“Because if he’s calling now…”
May you like
A pause.
“He wants us to know he’s alive.””
