Chapter 5: The Voice From The Past
The pool deck disappeared.
At least, that was how it felt.
Naomi no longer saw the cracked tiles beneath her feet. She no longer heard the hum of the lights or the distant sounds of students leaving the school.
All she heard was him.
Her father.
A voice she had replayed in her memory thousands of times.
A voice she had almost forgotten.
Almost.
The old phone speaker crackled.
Static filled the silence.
Then his voice returned.
“If you’re hearing this… it means Callie Morgan’s family found out the truth.””
Naomi covered her mouth.
Her knees nearly gave out.
Coach Reynolds immediately reached for a chair.
“Naomi, sit down.””
But she couldn’t.
Not yet.
Not while the answer she had spent seven years searching for was finally standing in front of her.
The recording continued.
“I don’t know who will find this phone. I don’t know if I’ll have a chance to explain everything.””
A pause.
A shaky breath.
Her father sounded afraid.
Naomi had never heard him afraid before.
“But if Naomi ever hears this…”
The sound of his voice saying her name broke something inside her.
“She needs to know one thing.””
Naomi closed her eyes.
“I never left her.””
A tear slipped down her cheek.
A single sentence.
Seven years of pain.
Seven years of wondering if she had been abandoned.
And now, from somewhere buried in the past, her father was telling her the truth.
“I need you to understand something, sweetheart. The people who look the most trustworthy are not always the ones protecting you.””
Everyone looked toward Callie.
She immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Nobody moved.
The recording continued.
“The Morgan family built their reputation on helping people. Donations. Community projects. Scholarships.””
A pause.
“But I discovered where some of that money was really coming from.””
Coach Reynolds’ expression changed.
He looked at Naomi.
“Fundraiser money.””
Naomi nodded slowly.
Her father’s voice continued.
“They weren’t stealing from just one place. They were moving money through different organizations. Schools.
Charities. Events.””
Naomi felt cold.
The fundraiser wasn’t random.
It had never been random.
It was part of something much bigger.
“I found evidence,” her father said.
“Documents. Records. Names.””
The recording became quieter.
“I thought bringing the truth forward would be enough.””
A pause.
“I was wrong.””
Naomi looked at Emma.
Emma’s face was filled with regret.
She had known something.
Not everything.
But something.
Her father continued.
“If anything happens to me, the evidence is hidden somewhere safe.””
Everyone leaned closer.
“Someone I trusted helped me protect it.””
The recording suddenly distorted.
Static swallowed the next few seconds.
Naomi held her breath.
Then:
“Naomi…”
His voice softened.
“If you’re listening to this, I need you to trust your instincts.””
A long pause.
“Someone close to you already knows where it is.””
The message ended.
The phone went silent.
Nobody spoke.
The silence afterward felt heavier than the recording itself.
Naomi stared at the device.
“That’s it?””
Coach Reynolds nodded.
“That’s all there was.””
“No.””
Naomi shook her head.
“There has to be more.””
She reached for the phone.
“There has to be another file.””
Coach Reynolds stopped her gently.
“The police are checking it.””
Naomi looked at him.
“My father knew someone close to me was involved.””
The words felt impossible.
She looked around the pool.
At Emma.
At Callie.
At everyone.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Callie laughed.
A small, bitter laugh.
“You’re all looking at me.””
Naomi turned.
Callie’s face was different now.
The arrogance was gone.
But something else remained.
Anger.
“You really think my family is the only one with secrets?””
Emma stiffened.
Naomi noticed.
“What does that mean?””
Callie looked at Emma.
“Ask her.””
Emma’s face changed.
“Callie.””
“No.””
Callie stepped closer.
“You want the truth? Fine.””
Coach Reynolds warned:
“Be careful.””
But Callie didn’t stop.
“Emma isn’t just some innocent friend who got scared.””
Naomi looked at Emma.
“Then what is she?””
Emma whispered:
“Callie, stop.””
Callie smiled.
“Tell her.””
Naomi’s heart pounded.
“Tell me what?””
Emma looked away.
Callie answered.
“Your father trusted Emma’s family.””
Naomi frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Callie folded her arms.
“It means the person who helped hide the evidence wasn’t my family.””
The room went silent.
“It was hers.””
Naomi stared.
“No.””
Emma looked like she wanted to disappear.
“Naomi…”
“No.””
Naomi shook her head.
“You said your father was afraid of them.””
“He was.””
“Then why would your family help him?””
Emma’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because they didn’t start this.””
Naomi waited.
Emma took a breath.
“My father helped your dad.””
The words stunned everyone.
Callie’s expression changed.
“What?””
Emma nodded.
“He helped him collect the evidence.””
Coach Reynolds stepped forward.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””
Emma looked at Naomi.
“Because my father disappeared too.””
Nobody spoke.
The room changed.
Two missing fathers.
One secret.
One powerful family standing in the middle.
Naomi whispered:
“What happened to your father?””
Emma looked down.
“He was found two months after yours.””
Naomi froze.
“What?””
“Everyone thought it was an accident.””
“But?””
Emma looked at the phone.
“But I never believed that.””
A cold feeling moved through Naomi.
The pieces were forming.
Slowly.
Painfully.
But they weren’t complete.
Coach Reynolds looked between them.
“So both your fathers were investigating the same thing?””
Emma nodded.
“Yes.””
“And someone wanted them silent.””
Emma looked at Callie.
Callie immediately snapped:
“Don’t look at me.””
Emma’s voice was quiet.
“I’m not.””
Everyone turned.
Emma looked past Callie.
Toward the entrance of the pool.
Naomi followed her eyes.
The door was still open.
Someone was standing there.
Someone who had been listening.
A man in a dark jacket.
Naomi didn’t recognize him.
But Coach Reynolds did.
His face went pale.
“You.””
The man didn’t move.
Naomi looked at him.
“Who is that?””
Nobody answered.
The man slowly stepped onto the pool deck.
His expression was calm.
Too calm.
“I was hoping I wouldn’t have to get involved.””
Coach Reynolds stepped in front of the students.
“You need to leave.””
The man ignored him.
His eyes moved to Naomi.
And then he said something that made her blood run cold.
“I knew your father.””
Naomi couldn’t breathe.
“Who are you?””
The man reached into his pocket.
Everyone tensed.
But he didn’t pull out a weapon.
He pulled out an old photograph.
He walked forward and handed it to Naomi.
Her fingers shook as she took it.
The picture showed three people standing together.
Her father.
Emma’s father.
And a third person.
Someone Naomi had never seen before.
Someone who looked exactly like the man standing in front of her.
Naomi looked up.
“Who are you?””
The man’s face hardened.
“My name is Daniel Morgan.””
Callie froze.
Because she knew that name.
Everyone did.
Daniel Morgan.
Callie’s uncle.
The man who disappeared from the Morgan family years ago.
The man everyone thought was dead.
He looked at Naomi.
And whispered:
“Your father didn’t disappear because he was exposed.””
A pause.
“He disappeared because he found out who was really controlling the money.””
Naomi tightened her grip on the photograph.
“Who?””
Daniel looked directly at Callie.
Then at Emma.
Then back at Naomi.
May you like
And said:
“The person who betrayed your father was standing beside him the entire time.””
