Chapter 8: The Hidden Truth Inside The School

The voice disappeared.

But the fear it left behind remained.

For a few seconds, nobody even looked at the intercom.

Everyone stared upward at the speaker mounted near the ceiling.

The same speaker that had announced practice schedules.

Competition reminders.

School events.

A device nobody ever noticed.

Until now.

Until someone used it to threaten Naomi.

Coach Reynolds moved first.

He grabbed his phone and stepped toward the office.

“I’m calling security.””

But Naomi didn’t move.

She was still staring at the speaker.

Because the voice had sounded familiar.

Not because she knew exactly who it was.

Because she had heard it before.

A calm voice.

A controlled voice.

A voice that always sounded like it had the answer.

Emma noticed her expression.

“You know who it was.””

Naomi shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“But?””

Naomi looked at her.

“But I’ve heard that voice.””

The pool doors suddenly opened.

A security officer rushed inside.

“What happened?””

Coach Reynolds pointed toward the intercom.

“Someone just made a threat through the school system.””

The officer immediately looked toward the control room.

“Who has access to the announcements?””

Coach Reynolds hesitated.

“A few administrators. Some teachers.””

“And students?””

“Only with permission.””

The officer nodded.

“Then we check the logs.””

Naomi finally moved.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

The officer frowned.

“What?””

Naomi looked at the empty hallway.

“If someone wanted to scare me, they wouldn’t have done it this way.””

Coach Reynolds looked confused.

“What do you mean?””

“They wanted us to know they could reach us.””

She looked at the speakers.

“They’re not hiding.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“He wants you to chase him.””

Naomi turned.

“He?””

Daniel looked away.

“You heard the voice.””

“You know who it is.””

Silence.

That was all Naomi needed.

“You know.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Naomi stepped closer.

“Tell me.””

Emma looked between them.

“Daniel.””

He closed his eyes.

Then finally said:

“It was Richard Morgan.””

Callie froze.

“My father?””

Nobody moved.

Naomi felt the room tilt.

Richard Morgan.

The man whose name appeared everywhere.

The businessman everyone admired.

The man who donated to schools.

The man who smiled for cameras and shook hands with politicians.

The man who had been hiding behind a perfect image.

“He’s alive?”” Callie whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.””

Callie’s face changed.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

“You knew?””

Daniel nodded.

“I found out months ago.””

“You didn’t tell me?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

Callie laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.””

She looked at Naomi.

“Everyone is always protecting someone.””

The words were painful because they were true.

Everyone in the room had hidden something.

Everyone had decided what Naomi was allowed to know.

And she was tired of being the last person to learn the truth about her own life.

“Where is he?”” Naomi asked.

Daniel looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

“You’re lying.””

“No.””

His voice hardened.

“I know where he was hiding.””

A pause.

“But he moved.””

Emma looked at him.

“Because he knew we found the phone.””

Daniel nodded.

Naomi crossed her arms.

“So he has been watching us.””

“Yes.””

“For how long?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Naomi’s expression changed.

“How long?””

Daniel looked away.

“Years.””

The answer hit harder than anything else.

Years.

Not days.

Not weeks.

Years.

Naomi remembered every moment she felt alone.

Every birthday without her father.

Every school event where she wished he could see her.

Every night she wondered if he had forgotten her.

And he had been alive.

Watching.

Somewhere.

Coach Reynolds returned from the office.

His face was tense.

“The security system logs were deleted.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

“The announcement record. The camera access. Everything from the last ten minutes.””

The officer frowned.

“Someone with advanced access did this.””

Naomi looked at the security cameras.

“Or someone who knew how to hide their tracks.””

A thought suddenly hit her.

She turned toward the lockers.

“The footage.””

Coach Reynolds looked at her.

“What?””

“The footage from today.””

The video showing Callie.

The video showing the planted envelope.

The video that exposed everything.

“What about it?””

Naomi looked at Daniel.

“If Richard Morgan knew we found the evidence…”

She swallowed.

“Wouldn’t he try to erase it?””

Everyone became silent.

They rushed to the coach’s office.

The computer screen displayed the security system.

The folder containing the recordings.

Coach Reynolds clicked.

Empty.

The footage was gone.

All of it.

Except one file.

One video remained.

Created five minutes earlier.

Everyone stared.

The title was simple.

*FOR NAOMI.*

Nobody spoke.

Coach Reynolds looked at the officer.

“Should we open it?””

Naomi answered before anyone else could.

“Yes.””

The file played.

At first, the screen showed darkness.

Then a man stepped into view.

Richard Morgan.

Older than the photographs.

Tired.

But still recognizable.

Callie whispered:

“Dad…”

Richard looked directly into the camera.

“Naomi.””

The sound of her name made everyone tense.

“I know you have questions.””

Naomi stared.

“Questions?””

Her voice was barely audible.

“You ruined my life.””

The recording continued.

“I know what you believe.””

Richard paused.

“You believe I destroyed your father.””

Daniel looked furious.

Richard continued.

“You believe I stole money. You believe I framed innocent people.””

A small smile appeared.

“But the truth is always more complicated.””

Naomi clenched her fists.

Even now, he was trying to control the story.

“I didn’t make your father disappear.””

The room became silent.

“I saved him.””

Nobody moved.

“What?””

Richard looked into the camera.

“Your father was about to expose people who would have destroyed everyone involved.””

Daniel whispered:

“He’s lying.””

But Naomi kept watching.

Richard continued.

“The evidence your father found wasn’t about me.””

Callie frowned.

“What?””

“It was about someone much closer.””

The screen flickered.

Then Richard said:

“Someone you trust.””

Naomi felt her stomach drop.

Again.

That phrase.

Someone she trusted.

Someone close.

Richard leaned toward the camera.

“You have been searching for the wrong person.””

The video paused.

Then continued.

“Your father didn’t leave because he was afraid of me.””

A pause.

“He left because he discovered the person helping him was the one who betrayed him.””

Everyone looked at Emma.

Then Daniel.

Then Callie.

The same circle.

The same mystery.

Richard’s voice lowered.

“And Naomi…”

The screen flickered.

“I think you already know who it was.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Callie suddenly whispered:

“No.””

Naomi turned.

Callie was staring at something behind them.

Not the screen.

Not the phone.

The doorway.

Everyone followed her eyes.

Someone was standing there.

A person who should not have been inside the building.

A person who had access to the school.

A person who had been missing from Naomi’s life for seven years.

Naomi stopped breathing.

“Dad?””

The man standing in the doorway looked older.

His hair was different.

His face carried years of pain.

But she knew those eyes.

She would have recognized them anywhere.

Her father.

Alive.

He looked at her with tears in his eyes.

And the first thing he said was not an apology.

Not an explanation.

May you like

It was a warning.

“Naomi, don’t trust anyone in this room.””
