Chapter 4: The Son Who Was Never Hers
Elena had imagined finding her lost son a thousand different ways.
In every dream, he was older than the baby she remembered.
He had her smile.
Richard’s eyes.
Maybe a scar from childhood.
Maybe a favorite song.
Maybe a story about a life she had missed.
She imagined running toward him.
Holding him.
Apologizing for all the birthdays she wasn’t there.
All the nights she didn’t read him a bedtime story.
All the moments stolen from both of them.
But she never imagined standing in front of two young men and realizing she had spent eighteen years loving the wrong child.
Daniel Ward stood beneath the hotel entrance lights, frozen.
The confident young man who had walked into the ballroom moments earlier was gone.
Now he looked like a child who had just heard the world was not what he thought it was.
Elena stared at him.
Her son.
The boy she had raised.
The boy whose first steps she recorded.
Whose first day of school she cried over.
Whose birthday cakes she made every year, even when she had business meetings across the country.
The boy who called her “Mom” for eighteen years.
But now another boy stood beside her.
A boy carrying the necklace from her past.
A boy with the birthmark from the photograph.
A boy who had her blood.
Her mind couldn’t hold both truths at once.
“Daniel…”
Her voice broke.
Daniel looked at Richard.
“Dad?””
The single word changed everything.
Richard immediately stepped forward.
“Daniel, go inside.””
Daniel didn’t move.
“Why?””
His eyes moved between the adults.
“Why is everyone looking at me like that?””
Nobody answered.
That silence frightened him more than any accusation could have.
“Elena?””
She flinched.
Not because he used her name.
Because she suddenly noticed he had never called her anything else.
Not recently.
Not after he became older.
Somewhere along the way, “Mom” had slowly disappeared.
She had ignored it.
She had told herself teenagers changed.
Now she wondered if some part of him had always known.
Sarah stepped closer.
“Daniel…”
He looked at her.
“Who are you?””
Sarah’s expression tightened.
“I’m sorry.””
“That’s not an answer.””
His voice rose.
“Why is everyone acting like I’m some kind of stranger?””
Richard moved between them.
“Daniel, trust me.””
Daniel laughed once.
A painful, confused sound.
“Trust you?””
He looked around.
“At this point, you’re telling me to trust you?””
Richard’s face hardened.
“Enough.””
Elena noticed the change.
The same thing happened every time Richard lost control.
His kindness disappeared.
The perfect husband disappeared.
The real man appeared.
“Richard,” she said quietly.
He looked at her.
“Move.””
A strange silence followed.
Because for the first time, Elena had given him an order.
And he knew it.
Richard stepped back.
Daniel looked at Elena.
“Mom… what’s happening?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
How could she explain eighteen years of lies in one sentence?
How could she tell him the woman standing nearby had given birth to him?
How could she say that the necklace in her hand had traveled through time to expose the truth?
Lucas watched Daniel carefully.
Unlike everyone else, he didn’t look angry.
He looked hurt.
Elena noticed.
“You knew about him?””
Lucas looked down.
“My mom told me.””
“Told you what?””
“That there was another boy.””
Daniel stared at him.
“What?””
Lucas swallowed.
“She said Richard gave you a life that should have been mine.””
The words hit Daniel like a physical blow.
“No.””
He looked at Richard.
“No, that’s not possible.””
Richard stayed silent.
Daniel’s breathing became faster.
“Dad?””
Still nothing.
“Dad, tell them.””
Richard looked at him.
And that was the moment Elena saw something heartbreaking.
Daniel wasn’t just afraid of losing a lie.
He was afraid of losing the only father he had ever known.
“Tell them this is wrong,” Daniel whispered.
Richard’s silence became an answer.
Daniel stepped backward.
“No.””
Elena wanted to comfort him.
Every instinct told her to run to him.
But her feet stayed still.
Because another instinct was screaming louder.
The mother inside her.
The mother who had been waiting eighteen years.
She looked at Lucas.
The boy who had crossed a city carrying a necklace because his mother was too afraid to enter.
The boy who had spent his entire life without knowing why.
She wanted to reach for him.
But she didn’t know how.
Would he accept her?
Could he?
She had missed everything.
His first word.
His first step.
His childhood.
His fears.
His dreams.
Daniel’s voice interrupted her thoughts.
“So what am I?””
Everyone turned.
He looked at Richard.
“What am I?””
Richard’s face softened slightly.
“You’re my son.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“I mean what am I to her?””
He pointed at Elena.
The question destroyed her.
Because she didn’t have an answer.
“You are…”
She stopped.
Her voice failed.
Daniel nodded slowly.
“That’s what I thought.””
He turned away.
“Daniel, wait.””
He stopped.
Elena wanted to say something meaningful.
Something that could fix the damage.
But there was no sentence powerful enough.
No apology large enough.
“I love you,” she finally whispered.
Daniel looked back.
And his expression broke her heart.
Because he believed her.
That was the worst part.
He believed she loved him.
He just didn’t know what that love meant anymore.
“I know,” he said quietly.
Then he looked at Lucas.
“And I guess you’re the reason.””
Lucas immediately shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You got everything.””
Lucas looked confused.
“I didn’t get anything.””
The words were simple.
But they carried years of pain.
Daniel looked at him.
For a moment, they were not enemies.
They were two young men who had both been victims of the same lie.
Then a loud sound came from inside the ballroom.
A phone ringing.
Everyone turned.
Richard reached into his pocket.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
Elena noticed.
“Who is it?””
Richard ignored her.
The phone continued ringing.
Finally, he answered.
“Hello?””
A few seconds passed.
Then his expression became pale.
“What?””
Everyone watched.
Richard turned away.
“No. That’s impossible.””
Elena stepped closer.
“What happened?””
Richard ended the call.
He looked at her.
For once, he looked like a man with no plan.
No control.
No escape.
“The hospital records were found.””
Sarah went still.
“What?””
Richard looked at her.
“They found the original file.””
Elena’s heartbeat quickened.
“What original file?””
Richard didn’t answer.
He looked toward Lucas.
Then Daniel.
Then Elena.
“The records proving what happened that night.””
Sarah whispered:
“Where?””
Richard’s face tightened.
“At St. Catherine’s.””
Elena stared.
“Who found them?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Richard slowly said:
“Your father’s old attorney.””
Elena felt cold.
“My father’s attorney died years ago.””
Richard nodded.
“He did.””
A pause.
“Before he died, he left instructions.””
Sarah’s hands shook.
“What instructions?””
Richard looked at Elena.
And she knew from his expression that the answer was going to change everything again.
“He said the records should only be opened if…”
Richard stopped.
“If what?””
His eyes moved toward Daniel.
“Only if both sons were found.””
The rain outside suddenly sounded distant.
Both sons.
Elena looked at Lucas.
Then Daniel.
Two boys.
Two lives.
One terrible secret.
But there was something else.
Something in Richard’s face that scared her.
Because finding the records wasn’t the end of the story.
It was the beginning of the part Richard had spent eighteen years trying to hide.
Elena stepped closer.
“What else is in that file?””
Richard looked at her.
And whispered:
“The reason your father chose which baby would stay with you.””
A silence fell.
Then Sarah’s phone buzzed.
She looked at the screen.
Her face drained of color.
“What?””
Elena grabbed her arm.
“What is it?””
Sarah turned the phone around.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
May you like
Only one sentence.
*If Elena learns the truth about the second baby, she will lose both of them.*
