Chapter 6: The Memory Elena Lost
The word followed Elena like a shadow.
*You.*
Thomas Hale’s voice echoed in her mind.
The person who made the first move was you.
For a moment, she couldn’t understand the sentence.
It didn’t connect.
It couldn’t.
She looked at Lucas.
Then Daniel.
Then Richard.
Her husband looked terrified.
Not surprised.
Not confused.
Terrified.
And that frightened her more than anything.
“What did you say?”” Elena whispered.
Thomas lowered his eyes.
“I said the decision that started everything came from you.””
Elena shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“No, I would never do that.””
“I know what you believe.””
“Not believe.””
She stepped forward.
“I know myself.””
Thomas nodded.
“That is why this will be difficult.””
Richard moved closer.
“Elena, you need to sit down.””
She turned toward him.
“Don’t.””
The word was sharp.
Richard stopped.
For eighteen years, he had been the person she reached for when she was afraid.
Now he was the person she feared.
Thomas opened the file again.
“The night your son was born, there was an emergency.””
Elena looked at the papers.
“I remember.””
She remembered the pain.
The panic.
The doctors rushing around.
The fear in everyone’s eyes.
But there was a blank space.
A moment she had never been able to remember.
“What emergency?””
Thomas hesitated.
“Your condition became unstable after delivery.””
Sarah looked down.
“You almost died.””
Elena’s face changed.
Nobody had ever told her that.
“Almost?””
Sarah nodded.
“You lost a lot of blood.””
Elena touched her stomach unconsciously.
She remembered waking up.
The hospital room.
Richard beside her.
The doctor telling her the baby didn’t make it.
But there was something missing.
Something between those moments.
Thomas continued.
“Before you lost consciousness, you gave instructions.””
Elena stared.
“What instructions?””
Thomas looked at Richard.
Richard closed his eyes.
“No.””
Elena turned.
“What does he know?””
Thomas answered.
“Richard was there.””
Her heartbeat increased.
“Of course he was.””
But suddenly, she wondered.
Was he?
Was he the only person there?
“What did I say?””
Thomas removed a small envelope.
“This was recorded in your father’s private notes.””
Elena took it.
Her fingers trembled as she opened it.
Inside was a handwritten page.
The handwriting was her father’s.
Again.
She hated how often she had seen that handwriting tonight.
The words blurred at first.
Then became clear.
*Elena was unconscious after surgery, but before losing awareness, she made one request.*
She kept reading.
*She said if anything happened to her, the baby must be protected from Richard.*
Elena stopped.
Her eyes widened.
“No.””
Richard looked at her.
“Elena…”
She continued reading.
*She believed Richard was hiding financial problems and feared he would use their child to secure his future.*
The paper shook.
“I never…”
Her voice disappeared.
Thomas watched her carefully.
“You did.””
“No.””
“You did not remember.””
Elena looked up.
“Why?””
Thomas sighed.
“Because your father made a decision.””
The answer made her cold.
“What decision?””
“He believed the trauma would destroy you.””
Sarah whispered:
“He used your memory loss to hide the truth.””
Elena stared at them.
“My memory loss?””
Thomas nodded.
“The medication, the blood loss, the trauma. You experienced a period of confusion after the birth.””
Elena touched her temple.
She suddenly remembered fragments.
A bright hospital light.
A baby crying.
Her father’s voice.
Richard arguing with someone.
Then darkness.
“I don’t remember.””
“I know.””
Thomas placed another document on the table.
“Your father ordered a temporary separation.””
Elena looked at him.
“Separation?””
“Between you and the baby.””
Her breath caught.
“For what reason?””
Thomas looked at Richard.
Richard finally spoke.
“Because you were afraid.””
Elena turned.
“You knew?””
Richard’s face was filled with guilt.
“I knew what you said.””
“Then why did you let me believe he died?””
Richard looked away.
Because the answer was worse than any lie.
Finally, he said:
“Because after everything happened…”
He stopped.
Elena waited.
“After everything happened, I realized your father was right about one thing.””
Her expression hardened.
“What thing?””
Richard swallowed.
“That I could lose you.””
The honesty was horrifying.
Not because it was unexpected.
Because it was selfish.
“You were afraid I would leave you.””
Richard nodded.
“And then?””
Elena’s voice became colder.
“And then you decided my grief was better than losing me?””
Richard didn’t answer.
She laughed softly.
A broken sound.
“You didn’t save our family.””
She looked at Lucas.
“You destroyed it.””
Daniel had been silent for several minutes.
Now he spoke.
“So what happened to me?””
Everyone looked at him.
His face was pale.
“But if I wasn’t her baby…”
He looked at Elena.
“Why did she raise me?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Thomas took a breath.
“Because when the records were changed, everyone believed the wrong child had been placed with Elena.””
Daniel stared.
“But Richard knew?””
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
“And he didn’t tell anyone?””
“No.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
The sound was painful.
“So my whole life…”
He looked at Elena.
“She loved me because she thought I was someone else.””
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I don’t know what’s true anymore.””
She stepped toward him.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
The word wasn’t angry.
It was afraid.
“I need time.””
Elena stopped.
Because she understood.
He wasn’t rejecting her.
He was grieving.
Just like she had eighteen years ago.
Lucas watched quietly.
Then he spoke.
“Daniel.””
Everyone turned.
The two young men looked at each other.
Lucas’s voice was soft.
“I don’t know what this makes us.””
Daniel looked at him.
“But I know one thing.””
“What?””
Lucas swallowed.
“None of this was our choice.””
The simplicity of the sentence broke something inside Elena.
Because it was true.
Two boys had spent their lives carrying the consequences of decisions made by adults.
She looked at Lucas.
Her son.
The word still felt impossible.
Then she looked at Daniel.
Her son in every way except blood.
The world had taken one child from her.
Then given her another.
Only to tell her both stories were lies.
A sudden noise interrupted them.
A phone rang.
Everyone turned.
This time, it was Elena’s phone.
She didn’t recognize the number.
She almost ignored it.
Then she saw the location.
St. Catherine’s Hospital.
Her hand froze.
“Hello?””
No one spoke at first.
Then an elderly woman’s voice came through.
“Is this Elena Ward?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Dr. Margaret Lewis.””
Elena felt a chill.
The name sounded familiar.
“Why are you calling me?””
The woman hesitated.
“Because I was the doctor who delivered your baby eighteen years ago.””
Elena closed her eyes.
Another ghost from the past.
“I thought you were retired.””
“I am.””
“Then why now?””
The woman’s voice became shaky.
“Because I found something.””
Elena looked at Thomas.
Then Sarah.
“What?””
A long silence.
Then the doctor whispered:
“I found the original birth record.””
Elena’s heart stopped.
“That’s impossible.””
“I thought so too.””
The woman breathed heavily.
“But there is something written on the record that changes everything.””
Elena gripped the phone.
“What does it say?””
The doctor’s answer came quietly.
“It says there were not two babies.””
Everyone went still.
Elena looked at Lucas.
Then Daniel.
The doctor continued:
“There was a third name listed.””
The rain outside seemed to stop.
“A third baby?””
The doctor whispered:
“Yes.””
Elena’s blood ran cold.
“And Elena…”
May you like
Her voice trembled.
“The record says your father took all three children.””
