Chapter 7: The Child No One Remembered

Elena forgot how to breathe.

The words from the phone remained frozen in the air.

*Your father took all three children.*

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not Richard.

Not Sarah.

Not Thomas.

Not even the rain seemed to exist anymore.

Elena slowly lowered the phone from her ear.

The screen was still lit.

The call was still connected.

“Dr. Lewis…”

Her voice sounded distant.

“What did you say?””

The elderly doctor took a shaky breath.

“I said the original record lists three infants.””

Elena looked at Thomas.

Then Sarah.

Then the two young men standing in front of her.

Three.

The number felt impossible.

“I had one baby.””

The doctor’s voice softened.

“That is what everyone believed.””

Elena closed her eyes.

“No.””

A memory flashed.

A hospital hallway.

A nurse running.

A voice saying something she couldn’t understand.

Then another sound.

A baby crying.

Not one cry.

More than one.

She opened her eyes.

“What happened to the third child?””

Silence.

The doctor hesitated.

And that hesitation terrified Elena.

“Dr. Lewis.””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“The record was incomplete.””

Elena’s hand tightened around the phone.

“How can a baby disappear from a hospital record?””

The doctor didn’t answer immediately.

Then she whispered:

“Because someone wanted that baby erased.””

The call ended moments later.

Elena stood beneath the hotel awning, surrounded by people who had each held a piece of the truth while she lived inside a lie.

She looked at Richard.

“Three.””

He said nothing.

“Three babies.””

His silence was enough.

Elena stepped closer.

“You knew.””

Richard looked exhausted.

“I knew there was a possibility.””

“A possibility?””

Her voice rose.

“You knew there might be another child out there.””

Richard looked away.

“And you did nothing?””

His face tightened.

“I tried.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You hid.””

Richard didn’t deny it.

That hurt more.

Lucas looked between them.

“So there’s another person?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel’s expression changed.

Another child.

Another missing piece.

Another person whose entire identity might have been stolen.

“How many secrets did you keep?”” Daniel asked Richard.

Richard looked at him.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Daniel laughed.

“You keep saying that.””

His eyes filled with anger.

“But every time you say it, someone else gets hurt.””

Richard looked down.

Because there was nothing he could say.

Thomas closed the file.

“We need to leave.””

Elena turned.

“Why?””

“Because if the third record has been found, then someone else knows.””

Sarah immediately understood.

Her face went pale.

“You think they’ll come after us?””

Thomas looked toward the street.

“I think they already know.””

As if his words had summoned it, a black sedan slowly passed the hotel entrance.

The same vehicle circled once.

Then disappeared into the rain.

Elena noticed.

“Who was that?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

And that frightened her.

“Thomas.””

He looked at her.

“There are people who spent eighteen years making sure this truth stayed buried.””

Elena stared.

“Are you saying they’re still protecting the secret?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Thomas looked at Lucas.

Then Daniel.

“Because one of those children was not just connected to your family.””

Elena frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas opened the file again.

Inside was a document Elena hadn’t seen before.

Not a medical record.

A financial report.

She scanned it.

Then stopped.

“This is my father’s company.””

Thomas nodded.

“Your father discovered something before the birth.””

“What?””

“He discovered that Richard was not the only person involved.””

Elena looked at Richard.

“Who else?””

Richard’s face changed.

A name appeared in his expression before anyone spoke.

Thomas noticed.

“You know.””

Richard said nothing.

“Tell her.””

Still nothing.

Elena grabbed Richard’s arm.

“Tell me.””

His eyes met hers.

And for the first time, she saw genuine fear.

“Your father had a partner.””

“Who?””

Richard swallowed.

“Someone inside the hospital.””

Sarah went still.

“No.””

Elena looked at her.

“You know who.””

Sarah’s lips trembled.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Sarah whispered:

“Dr. Adrian Cross.””

The name meant something.

Elena didn’t know why.

Then she remembered.

A photograph.

An old newspaper article.

A young doctor standing beside her father at a charity event.

The man her father called a genius.

The man everyone trusted.

“He delivered babies at St. Catherine’s.””

Sarah nodded.

“He controlled the maternity records.””

Thomas added:

“And he was the person who signed the final transfer.””

Elena felt sick.

“Where is he now?””

Nobody answered.

That was the answer.

“Dead?””

Thomas shook his head.

“Missing.””

A cold silence followed.

“How long?””

“Eighteen years.””

The exact amount of time.

Elena looked at the photograph again.

Her younger self.

The baby.

The life stolen.

Then another thought came.

“If Dr. Cross helped my father…”

She looked at Thomas.

“Why would he take three babies?””

Thomas hesitated.

“Because one of them was valuable.””

Elena’s eyes narrowed.

“Valuable?””

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

“Your father believed one child could change the future of your family.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It will.””

He handed her another document.

This one was sealed.

Elena opened it.

Inside was a DNA report.

But not like the others.

This one compared three samples.

Her name.

Lucas.

A third unknown person.

Her hands trembled.

“What is this?””

Thomas said quietly:

“The test your father secretly ordered before he died.””

Elena read the first line.

Then the second.

Then the conclusion.

Her face changed.

“Impossible.””

Sarah stepped closer.

“What?””

Elena couldn’t speak.

She handed the paper to Sarah.

Sarah read it.

Her expression collapsed.

“What does it mean?””

Thomas answered.

“It means the third child was not random.””

Elena looked at him.

“Then who was it?””

Thomas took a deep breath.

“The third baby was related to both families.””

Daniel frowned.

“What families?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Yours.””

Then he looked at Elena.

“And Richard’s.””

Nobody spoke.

The meaning slowly became clear.

A child connected to both sides.

A child who could inherit something.

Something bigger than money.

Elena looked at Richard.

“What did my father find?””

Richard didn’t answer.

She stepped closer.

“What was so important that three children had to be hidden?””

Richard closed his eyes.

When he finally spoke, his voice was almost a whisper.

“Your father discovered the inheritance wasn’t what everyone thought.””

Elena frowned.

“What inheritance?””

Richard looked at her.

“The company.””

She stared.

“My company?””

“No.””

His voice shook.

“Your grandfather’s original trust.””

Thomas nodded.

“Your grandfather created a condition.””

Elena looked confused.

“What condition?””

Thomas opened the final page.

“The controlling shares would not belong to the eldest child.””

A pause.

“They would belong to the child who carried a specific genetic marker.””

The words sounded unreal.

Elena stared.

“A genetic marker?””

Richard nodded.

“Your father believed the third baby had it.””

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at Lucas.

Lucas looked at Elena.

And suddenly, the entire nightmare had a new shape.

This was never only about a marriage.

Never only about revenge.

Never only about a stolen child.

It was about power.

About an inheritance.

About a secret someone had killed to protect.

Then Elena’s phone buzzed again.

Everyone turned.

A new message appeared.

Unknown number.

This time, there were only six words.

*Stop searching for the third child.*

Elena stared.

Then another message appeared.

*Or he will disappear again.*

Her blood went cold.

Because beneath the message was a photograph.

A recent photograph.

A young man standing outside a train station.

Someone Elena had never met.

Someone who looked strangely familiar.

May you like

And beneath the picture was a name.

*Noah Cross.*
