Chapter 5: The Secret Behind the Second Baby

The message on Sarah’s phone remained glowing in the darkness.

A single sentence.

A warning.

A threat.

*If Elena learns the truth about the second baby, she will lose both of them.*

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The rain continued falling.

The hotel lights continued shining.

The music inside the ballroom continued playing softly, completely unaware that a family had just been torn apart beneath the entrance.

Elena stared at the message.

“Who sent this?””

Sarah shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Richard looked away.

That tiny movement told Elena everything.

“You know.””

Richard’s eyes returned to hers.

“No.””

“Don’t lie to me again.””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm that came after years of pain finally turned into something stronger.

“You saw that message and you knew exactly what it meant.””

Richard said nothing.

Elena stepped closer.

“Who sent it?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then why do you look afraid?””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“Because you don’t understand what you’re dealing with.””

Elena almost smiled.

“I’ve heard that sentence all night.””

She held up the old photograph.

“First you told me I didn’t understand my own marriage.””

She looked at the file.

“Then I didn’t understand my father.””

Her eyes moved to Lucas and Daniel.

“And now I don’t understand my own children.””

Richard looked at both boys.

A strange sadness crossed his face.

But Elena no longer trusted his emotions.

Not anymore.

“What happened that night?”” she asked.

Richard stayed silent.

“Tell me the truth.””

He looked around.

The guests.

The cameras.

The people watching.

Then he lowered his voice.

“Not here.””

Elena shook her head.

“No.””

“Please.””

The word surprised her.

Richard rarely begged.

“I need to explain.””

“You had eighteen years.””

His face changed.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

Her voice cracked.

“You don’t know what eighteen years feels like.””

Richard looked down.

And for one brief moment, Elena saw the man she thought she married.

Then it disappeared.

“I made choices.””

“No.””

She stepped back.

“You made decisions.””

Richard looked at her.

“You think I don’t regret it?””

Elena stared.

“Regret is what you feel when you accidentally break something.””

She pointed toward Lucas.

“You didn’t break something.””

Her finger moved toward Daniel.

“You built a life on top of it.””

Daniel stood silently near the entrance.

He looked smaller than he had minutes earlier.

The confidence was gone.

The certainty.

Everything he knew about himself had been taken away.

Elena looked at him.

Her heart ached.

Then she looked at Lucas.

A boy who had lived his entire life without her.

Two sons.

Two victims.

And one question she couldn’t escape.

Why?

Why would anyone do this?

A car horn suddenly sounded outside.

Everyone turned.

A black vehicle had stopped near the hotel entrance.

A man stepped out.

He carried a leather briefcase.

Sarah’s face changed.

“No.””

Elena looked at her.

“What?””

Sarah whispered:

“That’s him.””

“Who?””

Sarah’s hands started shaking.

“The attorney.””

The man walked toward them slowly.

He was in his late sixties, wearing a dark coat and carrying himself with the confidence of someone who had spent decades protecting secrets.

He stopped beneath the awning.

“Mrs. Ward.””

Elena stared.

“Who are you?””

The man opened the briefcase.

“My name is Thomas Hale.””

The name meant nothing.

Until he added:

“I represented your father.””

Elena felt her stomach tighten.

“You have the records?””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Thomas.””

The attorney looked at him.

“Richard.””

The way they said each other’s names told Elena they knew each other well.

Too well.

“You knew,” Elena whispered.

Thomas looked at her.

“I knew pieces.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Thomas sighed.

“Your father was a complicated man.””

Elena laughed quietly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

She looked at the file.

“People call monsters complicated when they don’t want to say what they are.””

Nobody responded.

Thomas opened the briefcase.

Inside was a thick envelope.

“The original documents.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“How did you get these?””

Thomas looked at her.

“Your former employer kept copies.””

Sarah froze.

“Who?””

Thomas looked toward Richard.

Elena followed his eyes.

A cold feeling moved through her.

“No.””

Richard’s expression darkened.

“Thomas, don’t.””

The attorney ignored him.

“The person who kept these records hidden was Richard Ward.””

Daniel looked at his father.

Again.

Another crack in the foundation.

Richard shook his head.

“That’s not true.””

Thomas looked at him.

“You hired me to destroy the evidence.””

The silence that followed was absolute.

Daniel whispered:

“Dad…”

Richard closed his eyes.

“Elena, listen.””

“No.””

She looked at Thomas.

“Open the file.””

Richard moved quickly.

“No.””

Security immediately noticed.

But Elena raised her hand.

Nobody moved.

“Open it.””

Thomas nodded.

He removed the papers carefully.

The first page was a medical report.

The second was a transfer record.

The third was a handwritten note.

Elena scanned the pages.

Her face became pale.

“What is this?””

Thomas answered quietly.

“The truth.””

She looked at him.

“I need more than that.””

Thomas took a breath.

“Your father arranged the transfer.””

Elena’s eyes narrowed.

“We know that.””

“No.””

Thomas shook his head.

“You know part of it.””

He looked at Lucas.

“Your father did not choose which baby would be taken.””

Elena went still.

“What?””

Thomas continued.

“Because there were never two unrelated babies.””

Everyone became silent.

Daniel frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

Thomas looked at him.

“You were born first.””

Daniel froze.

Lucas looked confused.

Elena’s heart began racing.

“What are you saying?””

Thomas looked at the papers.

“On the night Elena gave birth, there was a complication.””

Elena felt dizzy.

“What complication?””

“The hospital records were changed.””

Sarah covered her mouth.

“No…”

Thomas nodded.

“Your son was not the only baby born that night.””

Elena looked between Lucas and Daniel.

“What?””

Thomas continued.

“Your father discovered something the doctors didn’t realize immediately.””

“What?””

Thomas looked at Elena.

“The babies were switched.””

The words hit like thunder.

Nobody breathed.

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Lucas stared.

“What?””

Elena couldn’t move.

She couldn’t speak.

Thomas continued carefully.

“Your father believed Richard had arranged the situation. He believed Richard was planning to use the child connected to Elena’s wealth as a way to secure his future.””

Richard’s voice turned angry.

“That’s a lie.””

Thomas ignored him.

“But when your father investigated, he found something else.””

Elena whispered:

“What?””

Thomas looked at both young men.

“The baby Richard wanted to keep…”

He paused.

“…was not the baby Elena gave birth to.””

Daniel stepped backward.

“No.””

Thomas looked at him with sadness.

“The child raised as Daniel Ward was placed into Elena’s arms through a mistake that Richard later chose to hide.””

The world seemed to tilt.

Elena looked at Daniel.

Then Lucas.

Two boys.

One truth.

Her memories.

Her love.

Her grief.

Everything suddenly became impossible to separate.

Daniel’s voice trembled.

“So I’m not…”

He couldn’t finish.

Elena immediately stepped toward him.

“Daniel.””

But he backed away.

“No.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Don’t.””

The pain in his voice was worse than anger.

Because he wasn’t accusing her.

He was trying to understand who he was.

Lucas looked at Elena.

“Then who am I?””

No one answered.

Thomas opened the final document.

“This is why your father’s attorney kept the records.””

He placed the paper on the table.

“The DNA confirmation.””

Elena looked down.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

A single line.

A sentence that would decide everything.

She read it once.

Then again.

Her hands started shaking.

Because the results revealed something nobody expected.

Lucas was not just her biological son.

Daniel was not just a child caught in a lie.

The truth was far more complicated.

Elena looked up slowly.

And whispered:

“Richard…”

Everyone turned.

She looked at her husband.

“You knew the babies were switched.””

Richard said nothing.

“You knew…”

Her voice broke.

“And you still chose.””

Richard’s face changed.

For the first time, he had no excuse.

No explanation.

No carefully prepared story.

Only silence.

Then Thomas spoke quietly.

“There’s one more thing you need to know.””

Elena looked at him.

“What?””

Thomas glanced at Daniel.

Then Lucas.

Then the hotel doors behind them.

“The person who ordered the original switch…”

He paused.

“It wasn’t Richard.””

Elena felt cold.

“Then who?””

Thomas lowered his voice.

“The person who made the first move…”

May you like

He looked directly at Elena.

“Was you.””
