Chapter 8: The Boy Who Was Erased

Elena stared at the photograph until the world around her disappeared.

The young man standing outside the train station looked ordinary.

That was what frightened her most.

He wasn’t hiding.

He wasn’t surrounded by danger.

He was just standing there with a backpack over one shoulder, looking down at his phone.

A normal young man.

A person who had no idea his name had just entered a story built on eighteen years of lies.

*Noah Cross.*

The name felt like a warning.

Not because Elena knew him.

Because she didn’t.

And yet something about his face made her heart ache.

The shape of his eyes.

The way he held his head.

A strange familiarity she couldn’t explain.

“Who sent this?”” Daniel asked.

Nobody answered.

He looked at Richard.

“Dad?””

Richard’s face had gone completely pale.

Daniel noticed.

“You know him.””

Richard looked away.

That was all Elena needed to see.

“You know Noah.””

Richard’s silence was heavier than any confession.

Elena stepped closer.

“How?””

Richard swallowed.

“I knew his name.””

“Not good enough.””

“Elena—”

“How?””

The hotel entrance had become painfully quiet.

Everyone was watching.

But Elena no longer cared.

She had spent eighteen years protecting Richard’s image.

She had defended him to friends.

Family.

The world.

Now she wanted the truth more than she wanted dignity.

Richard lowered his voice.

“Because Noah was part of the investigation.””

Sarah frowned.

“What investigation?””

Richard looked at Thomas.

The attorney’s expression changed.

“You knew?””

Richard looked at him.

“Yes.””

Thomas’s face hardened.

“You told me he disappeared.””

“He did.””

“No.””

Thomas stepped closer.

“You told me Dr. Cross had taken the third child.””

Richard looked away.

“Because that was what we believed.””

Elena felt a cold wave move through her.

“What happened to Noah?””

Nobody answered.

“Tell me.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“I don’t know.””

She stared.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“It’s the truth.””

“You’ve spent all night telling me truths that turned out to be lies.””

Richard looked at Lucas.

Then Daniel.

Then Elena.

“I knew there was a third child.””

His voice became quieter.

“But I didn’t know where he went.””

Sarah whispered:

“How could you not know?””

Richard looked at her.

“Because Adrian Cross disappeared with him.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

Thomas looked at Richard.

“That’s not what happened.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“What?””

Thomas opened the file.

“The original transfer records.””

He pulled out a document.

“I found this years ago.””

Elena stared.

“Years ago?””

Thomas nodded.

“I was investigating your father’s estate.””

“And you never told me?””

Thomas looked ashamed.

“I was afraid.””

Elena almost laughed.

“Everyone was afraid.””

Thomas accepted the criticism.

He deserved it.

“What does it say?””

Thomas looked at the paper.

“It says Noah was never taken by Dr. Cross.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“Then who took him?””

Thomas looked at Richard.

“Someone working with Richard.””

Silence.

Daniel looked at his father.

Again.

“No.””

Richard shook his head.

“I didn’t know.””

“You keep saying that.””

Daniel’s voice broke.

“But somehow every secret leads back to you.””

Richard looked devastated.

But Elena no longer knew whether it was guilt or regret.

Thomas continued.

“The third child was removed from the hospital before the official transfer.””

Elena frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Noah was gone before anyone knew there was a problem.””

Sarah looked confused.

“Then how did Richard know?””

Thomas answered:

“Because someone told him.””

Everyone turned.

“Who?””

Thomas hesitated.

Then he said:

“Your father.””

Elena went still.

“My father?””

Thomas nodded.

“Your father knew Noah existed.””

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was obvious.

Her father had not protected her.

He had controlled her.

Again.

Elena looked at the sky.

For years, she had mourned her father.

She had missed him.

She had remembered his kindness.

Now every memory had a shadow.

“Where is Noah now?””

Thomas looked at the photograph.

“That’s what we need to find out.””

A sudden movement came from Lucas.

He stepped forward.

“I know where he is.””

Everyone turned.

Elena looked at him.

“What?””

Lucas hesitated.

“My mother told me.””

Sarah’s face changed.

“Lucas.””

“I’m sorry.””

He looked at Elena.

“But she said if we ever found you, I needed to tell you everything.””

Sarah closed her eyes.

She knew the secret was finally escaping.

“Where is he?””

Lucas looked down.

“He lives in a small town outside the city.””

Daniel stared.

“You know him?””

Lucas nodded.

“Not personally.””

“Then how?””

“My mom found him years ago.””

Sarah looked at Elena.

“I searched after I left the hospital.””

Elena’s expression softened slightly.

“You searched?””

Sarah nodded.

“I couldn’t undo what I did.””

Her voice broke.

“But I needed to know if he was alive.””

“What did you find?””

Sarah looked at Lucas.

“I found a child with no birth certificate.””

Elena felt cold.

“No birth certificate?””

Sarah shook her head.

“He had a different name.””

“What name?””

Sarah whispered:

“Noah Cross.””

The same name.

The same child.

Elena looked at the photograph again.

“He was raised by Dr. Cross?””

Sarah nodded.

“But not as his son.””

“Then as what?””

Sarah looked away.

“As proof.””

Elena frowned.

“Proof of what?””

Sarah’s voice became quiet.

“Proof that your father’s plan worked.””

The words made no sense.

“What plan?””

Sarah looked at Thomas.

Then Richard.

Then Elena.

“Your father didn’t want the inheritance to go to the child with the genetic marker.””

Elena stared.

“Then what did he want?””

Sarah answered:

“He wanted to create a child who could never claim it.””

The silence was immediate.

Daniel whispered:

“What?””

Sarah continued.

“Dr. Cross was paid to erase Noah’s identity.””

Elena felt sick.

“He wasn’t hidden because he was valuable.””

Sarah shook her head.

“He was hidden because he was dangerous.””

“Dangerous?””

Thomas nodded.

“Because if Noah was found, the entire inheritance would be challenged.””

Elena looked at Lucas.

Then Daniel.

Then the photograph.

Three children.

Three stolen lives.

All because of money.

All because of people who believed they had the right to decide someone else’s future.

A loud crash suddenly came from inside the ballroom.

Everyone turned.

The glass doors had shattered.

Guests screamed.

Security rushed forward.

A man wearing a dark jacket stepped through the broken entrance.

His face was hidden by the rain.

But he wasn’t looking at Elena.

He was looking at Noah’s photograph in her hand.

Thomas immediately recognized him.

“No.””

Elena looked at him.

“Who is that?””

Thomas’s face turned pale.

“He shouldn’t be here.””

The man walked closer.

Security moved toward him.

But before they reached him, he shouted:

“Where is Noah?””

Everyone froze.

Elena tightened her grip on the photograph.

The stranger looked directly at her.

“You found the file.””

His voice was calm.

Almost tired.

Thomas whispered:

“Adrian Cross.””

The name spread through the entrance like a shockwave.

The doctor who disappeared.

The man connected to the missing child.

The man who knew the truth.

Elena stepped forward.

“You took him.””

Adrian looked at her.

For a moment, sadness crossed his face.

Then something else.

Regret.

“I didn’t take him.””

Elena’s eyes narrowed.

“Then what did you do?””

Adrian looked around at the faces.

Lucas.

Daniel.

Richard.

Thomas.

Then finally Elena.

“I spent eighteen years protecting Noah from the people who wanted him erased.””

Nobody spoke.

Elena’s voice became colder.

“Then why are you here?””

Adrian looked toward the rain outside.

Because his next words changed everything.

“Because Noah found out who his real parents are.””

Elena’s heart stopped.

“And?””

Adrian looked at her.

“He’s coming here.””

A moment passed.

Then Elena’s phone buzzed.

Another unknown message.

This time, there was no warning.

No threat.

Only a location.

May you like

And three words.

*I remember everything.*
