Chapter 3: The Name in the Photograph
Adrian stared at the message until the words blurred.
*Now ask your father why Richard Vane is still alive.*
He looked at Samuel.
The old man's face had gone white.
“You know him,” Adrian said.
Samuel slowly shook his head.
“No.””
“That's a lie.””
“I know the name.””
“You said he disappeared.””
“I thought he had.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“You're telling me the man who kidnapped me is still alive?””
Samuel looked toward the transmitter in Marcus's hand.
“I don't know.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“Mr. Cole, we need to leave.””
Adrian didn't move.
“Not without answers.””
“Those answers won't help if we're dead.””
Samuel suddenly grabbed Adrian's wrist.
“Listen to him.””
Adrian looked down at the trembling fingers wrapped around his sleeve.
Samuel whispered, “You don't understand what you're standing inside.””
Adrian pulled his hand free.
“Then explain it.””
Samuel's breathing became uneven.
“Richard Vane wasn't just one man.””
“What does that mean?””
“He worked for people who never put their names on anything.””
Adrian frowned.
“Investors?””
“Politicians. Bankers. Corporate owners. Men who could make a police report disappear with one phone call.””
Marcus looked sharply at Samuel.
“You're saying this was organized?””
Samuel nodded.
“It wasn't about money.””
Adrian glanced at the photograph inside the compass.
His mother.
The unknown man beside her.
His uncle.
And the message:
*HE KNOWS WHO YOU ARE.*
“What was my uncle's name?””
Samuel hesitated.
“Jonathan.””
“Jonathan what?””
“Hart.””
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
“And where is he?””
Samuel looked toward the floor.
“I haven't seen him in nineteen years.””
“Why?””
“Because he went looking for Richard Vane.””
“And?””
“He found him.””
Adrian's stomach tightened.
“What happened?””
Samuel swallowed.
“Jonathan called me.””
“When?””
“The night before you turned nine.””
Adrian stared at him.
“You remember my birthday?””
“A father remembers.””
The words landed harder than Adrian expected.
Samuel continued.
“Jonathan said he had found the man who took you.””
“What did he say?””
“He told me not to come.””
“Why?””
“He said someone was watching his house.””
Adrian glanced at Marcus.
“Did you go?””
Samuel nodded.
“I arrived too late.””
“What did you find?””
“The front door was open.””
A long pause.
“Jonathan was gone.””
“Blood?””
“Yes.””
“A lot?””
Samuel shook his head.
“Just enough to make me think he was hurt.””
“Was he ever found?””
“No.””
Adrian looked back at the photograph.
“And you believe he's alive?””
“I don't know.””
“You just said he knows who I am.””
Samuel went silent.
“Who wrote that?”” Adrian demanded.
Samuel looked at the compass.
“Jonathan.””
Adrian's heart skipped.
“You've had that photograph for twenty years.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you show me?””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Every time I found you.””
Adrian stared at him.
“You found me before tonight?””
Samuel's eyes filled with tears.
“I saw you six years ago.””
Adrian froze.
“Where?””
“Outside your headquarters.””
He remembered.
Six years earlier, before he had become a household name, a homeless man had been removed from the sidewalk outside Cole Holdings.
Adrian had barely noticed.
“You were there.””
Samuel nodded.
“I waited outside for three days.””
Adrian's voice dropped.
“Why didn't you approach me?””
“I was afraid.””
“Of me?””
“Of what would happen to you.””
A bitter laugh escaped Adrian.
“Someone should have told me that my life was a lie.””
“I thought knowing would get you killed.””
Adrian's expression hardened.
“So instead, you watched me from a sidewalk?””
“I watched you grow.””
Samuel wiped his eyes.
“You walked out of that building wearing a black suit. Your hair was neatly combed. People called you Mr. Cole.””
His mouth trembled.
“I wanted to call you Daniel.””
Adrian turned away.
For some reason, that hurt more than the kidnapping story.
Marcus interrupted.
“We have to move.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Why?””
Marcus lifted the transmitter.
“This isn't a passive tracker.””
“What is it?””
“Two-way.””
Samuel's eyes widened.
“They can hear us?””
Marcus nodded.
“And possibly communicate with the device.””
Adrian looked toward the ceiling.
“Then they've heard everything.””
“Yes.””
A heavy silence settled over the room.
Then the lights went out.
Darkness swallowed them.
Someone screamed in the restaurant.
A glass shattered.
Marcus drew his weapon.
“Stay down!””
Adrian heard chairs scraping outside.
Footsteps.
Fast.
Then a gunshot.
The private room door burst open.
Marcus shoved Adrian against the wall.
“Don't move!””
Another shot cracked through the restaurant.
Adrian heard Claire cry out.
“Marcus!””
“I've got her!””
Someone ran past the doorway.
A shadow.
Adrian moved before he could think.
“Don't!””
Samuel caught him.
“It's what they want!””
Adrian stopped.
A second later, emergency lights flickered on.
Red.
Dim.
Unsteady.
Smoke drifted through the dining room.
Marcus appeared in the doorway.
“Everyone's alive.””
Adrian exhaled.
“Where's Claire?””
“Crouched behind the bar.””
“And the attacker?””
“Gone.””
Marcus looked down.
Near the entrance lay a black leather glove.
He picked it up.
“There.””
A folded note had been tucked inside.
Adrian took it.
There were only six words.
*Ask what happened to your father.*
Samuel stepped closer.
“I told you.””
“You said my father survived.””
“Yes.””
“You never said his name.””
Samuel looked at him.
“Daniel…”
“Don't call me that.””
Samuel flinched.
Adrian held up the note.
“My father. His name.””
Samuel's lips parted.
Before he could answer, a voice came from behind Adrian.
“His name was Daniel Cole.””
Everyone turned.
Claire stood in the doorway.
Her face was pale.
Adrian stared at her.
“What did you say?””
Claire's hands were shaking.
“I said his name was Daniel Cole.””
Samuel's face collapsed.
“No.””
Adrian stepped toward Claire.
“Why would you know that?””
She looked at Samuel.
Then at Adrian.
“I found something in the company archives.””
“What?””
“An old insurance file.””
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
“Whose?””
“Yours.””
He went still.
“My insurance file?””
“It was created before your adoptive parents officially took custody of you.””
Claire swallowed.
“There was a life insurance policy attached to a child named Daniel Cole.””
Adrian stared at her.
“How much?””
“Fifty million dollars.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“That's impossible.””
Claire shook her head.
“The policy was paid out.””
“To whom?””
Claire's eyes met Adrian's.
“To Richard Vane.””
Samuel stumbled backward.
“No.””
Adrian caught him before he fell.
“Look at me.””
Samuel could barely speak.
“That's why.””
“Why what?””
“That's why they took you.””
Adrian gripped his shoulders.
“Why?””
“Because you weren't just a child.””
Samuel's eyes filled with terror.
“You were the beneficiary.””
Adrian released him.
“Beneficiary of what?””
Samuel pointed to the compass.
“Your mother didn't just hide a ledger.””
He took a shaky breath.
“She hid the ownership papers.””
“For what?””
Samuel looked directly into Adrian's eyes.
“For the company that made Richard Vane rich.””
Adrian's mouth went dry.
“What company?””
Samuel whispered the name.
“Cole Meridian.””
Adrian knew it immediately.
It was the company his adoptive father had supposedly founded from nothing.
The company that had eventually become the foundation of Adrian's billion-dollar empire.
The company whose first major acquisition had been made twenty years ago.
Three weeks after Daniel Hart disappeared.
Adrian stepped backward.
“No.””
Claire slowly opened the file she was holding.
“There is one more thing.””
She removed a yellowed document.
A birth certificate.
She placed it on the table.
Adrian stared at the name.
*Child: Daniel Samuel Hart.*
*Father: Samuel Hart.*
*Mother: Elena Hart.*
He read it twice.
Then a third time.
His eyes burned.
Samuel whispered, “I never changed your name.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Someone else did.””
Samuel nodded.
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
Adrian's phone vibrated.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
This time there was no text.
Only a photograph.
Adrian opened it.
His blood turned cold.
The image showed a small cemetery covered in snow.
A single grave stood in the center.
The name was visible.
*ELENA HART*
Below it was a date.
November 14.
Adrian stared.
Then he noticed someone standing behind the grave.
An older man in a dark coat.
The photograph had been taken from far away.
But Adrian recognized him instantly.
The crooked line beneath the left eye.
The same face from the old family photograph.
His uncle.
Jonathan.
Another message appeared.
*Your father was not the man you thought.*
May you like
A second followed.
*And your uncle wants to meet you tonight.*
