Chapter 7: The House Beneath the Ashes

Adrian read the message three times.

*Come alone, or your father dies.*

The words felt impossible.

His father.

Alive.

After twenty years of believing he was gone.

After building an entire identity around a story that might have been manufactured.

Adrian looked at Jonathan.

“You knew.””

Jonathan didn't answer.

That was enough.

“You knew he was alive.””

“I suspected.””

“You suspected?””

Adrian stepped forward.

“My father has been alive for twenty years, and you suspected?””

Jonathan looked away.

“I searched for him.””

“And?””

“I found pieces.””

“What pieces?””

“Letters. Financial records. Locations.””

“Locations?””

Jonathan nodded.

“But every trail ended.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

The old man’s face tightened.

“Because every person who got close to the truth disappeared.””

Adrian pointed at his phone.

“And now my father sends me a video?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't he contact me before?””

Jonathan had no answer.

That bothered Adrian more than anything.

Everyone had explanations.

Everyone had reasons.

Everyone had secrets.

But nobody had answers.

Marcus looked at the phone.

“The message says come alone.””

Adrian looked at him.

“You think I’m going?””

Marcus gave him a flat look.

“Yes.””

Adrian almost smiled.

“You know me too well.””

“I know enough to know you won't ignore a threat against your father.””

Jonathan stepped forward.

“You cannot go there.””

Adrian looked at him.

“You don't get to tell me what I can do.””

“Daniel—”

“Stop.””

Jonathan stopped.

Adrian's voice lowered.

“My whole life, people have made choices for me.””

He looked at the compass.

“Who I was.””

He looked at Jonathan.

“What I remembered.””

He looked at the city beyond the cemetery.

“What I became.””

His eyes hardened.

“I’m done letting people decide my story.””

Marcus nodded slightly.

“Then we prepare.””

Adrian looked at him.

“No.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

“I go alone.””

“Absolutely not.””

“Marcus.””

“No.””

The security chief stepped closer.

“You can be angry. You can be confused. You can hate every person in this cemetery. But you are not walking into a trap by yourself.””

Adrian looked at him.

“You heard the message.””

“Yes.””

“My father dies if I don't.””

“And you believe that?””

Adrian hesitated.

Marcus noticed.

“Good.””

“What?””

“You hesitated.””

Adrian looked away.

“Because I don't know who to trust.””

Marcus nodded.

“Exactly.””

Jonathan spoke quietly.

“Your father wouldn't want you to go alone.””

Adrian turned.

“You don't know what my father wants.””

“I do.””

“How?””

Jonathan looked at the compass.

“Because I knew him before you did.””

Adrian said nothing.

Jonathan continued.

“Ethan spent his entire life protecting you.””

“Then why did he leave me?””

The question came out before Adrian could stop it.

Jonathan's face softened.

“He didn't.””

“Then why wasn't he there?””

“Because he thought being gone was the only way to keep you alive.””

Adrian looked at him.

“And you believe that?””

Jonathan nodded.

“I watched him choose pain over losing you.””

A long silence followed.

Then Adrian turned away.

“Where is the house?””

Jonathan looked surprised.

“You're still going.””

“Yes.””

“Then I’m coming.””

“No.””

“Daniel—”

“I said no.””

Jonathan stopped.

Adrian looked at him.

“If you betrayed me, I’ll find out.””

Jonathan accepted that.

“And if I didn't?””

Adrian's expression didn't change.

“Then I'll find that out too.””

The Hart property was hidden beyond an abandoned logging road.

No signs.

No buildings.

Nothing that suggested a family had once lived there.

Only trees.

And silence.

Adrian stood outside the vehicle, staring at the empty land.

“This is it?””

Jonathan nodded.

“Yes.””

“There’s nothing here.””

“That’s what they wanted people to think.””

Adrian walked forward.

The ground was covered with weeds.

But then he saw something.

A small stone.

Half-buried.

With initials carved into it.

A.H.

Adrian touched it.

His fingers froze.

Another memory.

A child laughing.

A woman chasing him through grass.

A man lifting him onto his shoulders.

His father.

He stepped back.

“I know this place.””

Jonathan watched carefully.

“You're remembering.””

“No.””

Adrian looked around.

“I’m feeling something.””

Jonathan nodded.

“That’s where it starts.””

They walked deeper into the property.

After several minutes, Jonathan stopped beside a large tree.

“Here.””

Adrian looked around.

“Here?””

Jonathan knelt and brushed away dirt.

A metal ring appeared beneath the soil.

Adrian stared.

“A door?””

Jonathan pulled it upward.

A hidden staircase descended into darkness.

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“You knew this was here.””

Jonathan nodded.

“And you never told anyone?””

“No.””

“Why?””

Jonathan looked down.

“Because I was afraid of what we would find.””

Adrian looked into the darkness.

“What’s underneath?””

Jonathan answered quietly.

“The truth.””

The underground room was preserved perfectly.

Not abandoned.

Not destroyed.

Preserved.

A small wooden desk.

Old shelves.

A child's bed.

Photographs on the wall.

Adrian stopped breathing.

His childhood.

All of it.

A blue bicycle.

A stuffed bear.

A drawing of a family.

His handwriting.

He stepped closer.

The drawing showed three people.

A mother.

A father.

A little boy.

Above them were words written in crooked letters.

*THE HART FAMILY*

Adrian touched the paper.

A memory hit him.

His father sitting beside him.

“Write your name.””

The boy frowned.

“I don't know how.””

His father laughed.

“Yes, you do.””

The boy grabbed the pencil.

Drew carefully.

Daniel.

Adrian opened his eyes.

A tear fell before he realized it.

Marcus looked away.

Giving him privacy.

Jonathan whispered:

“You remember.””

Adrian didn't answer.

He walked toward the desk.

There was a locked wooden box.

On top was a message.

Written in his mother's handwriting.

His hands shook.

He knew that handwriting.

Even after twenty years.

*For Daniel. Open only when you know who you are.*

Adrian stared.

“What does that mean?””

Jonathan looked at him.

“Maybe your mother knew you would need proof.””

Adrian opened the box.

Inside was a small recorder.

And a sealed envelope.

He pressed play.

Static.

Then a woman's voice.

His mother's voice.

Adrian froze.

“Daniel…”

His knees almost gave out.

The voice was older than his memories.

But it was her.

“I don't know when you will hear this.””

A shaky breath.

“If you are listening, then something happened.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Your father and I wanted to protect you.””

A pause.

“But protecting you meant lying to you.””

Jonathan looked down.

The recording continued.

“There are people who will tell you different stories.””

Adrian looked at Jonathan.

“Some will say your father betrayed you.””

A pause.

“Some will say your uncle did.””

Another pause.

“But the truth is harder.””

The recording crackled.

“The person who destroyed our family was someone we trusted.””

Adrian leaned closer.

His mother's voice became softer.

“The person who raised you.””

Silence.

Marcus looked at Adrian.

Adrian's face went pale.

Victor.

His adoptive father.

The recording continued.

“I need you to understand something, Daniel.””

A faint sound.

Like she was crying.

“Victor didn't take you because he hated you.””

Adrian's breath caught.

“He took you because he loved what you represented.””

The room became silent.

“Power.””

“Money.””

“Control.””

The recording stopped.

Then restarted.

A final sentence.

A whisper.

“And because he was not the man who raised you alone.””

Adrian frowned.

“What?””

The recording clicked.

His mother's final words played.

“Daniel, if you found this room…”

A pause.

“Then Richard Vane already knows.””

The lights suddenly went out.

Everyone froze.

Marcus reached for his weapon.

A sound echoed from the entrance.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Someone was walking down the hidden stairs.

Adrian turned.

A man's voice came from the darkness.

“You were always smarter than Victor expected.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The figure entered the dim light.

Older.

Scar across his face.

Holding a photograph.

Adrian recognized him.

Not from the past.

From the video.

His father.

Ethan Cole.

Alive.

The man looked at him with tears in his eyes.

“My son.””

Adrian couldn't speak.

Ethan looked at Jonathan.

Then back at Adrian.

“I’m sorry it took twenty years.””

Adrian finally found his voice.

“Why?””

Ethan lowered his head.

“Because the man who raised you wasn't just trying to steal your inheritance.””

He looked toward the entrance.

His expression turned fearful.

“He was trying to make sure you never discovered who your real family was.””

A sound came from above.

A door closing.

Ethan's face changed.

“They found us.””

Marcus looked up.

“How many?””

Ethan whispered:

“Enough.””

Then the hidden room door locked from the outside.

And a voice came through the metal.

A voice Adrian knew.

A voice he had trusted his entire life.

“Adrian.””

His blood turned cold.

“Open the door.””

May you like

Victor Cole spoke again.

“Your father and I need to have a conversation.””
