Chapter 9: The Last Secret of the Compass
Adrian stared at Claire.
For a moment, nobody moved.
The woman who had stood beside him for six years.
The person who knew every meeting on his calendar.
Every business decision.
Every weakness he tried to hide.
The person he trusted when everyone else wanted something from him.
She stood in the tunnel holding a small flashlight.
And she looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Not yet.
But terrified.
Adrian raised the photograph.
“You.””
Claire swallowed.
“Adrian…”
“No.””
His voice echoed against the stone walls.
“You don't get to say my name like everything is normal.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Who is she?””
Adrian didn't look away from Claire.
“My assistant.””
Ethan's expression changed.
“The one who works for Cole Meridian?””
“Yes.””
Claire looked at Ethan.
“You're alive.””
The words were strange.
Almost like she had known he wasn't supposed to be.
Adrian noticed.
“You knew.””
Claire closed her eyes.
That was the answer.
Again.
Another person who knew.
Another person who watched him live inside a lie.
“How long?””
Claire looked at him.
“Adrian…”
“How long did you know?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Three years.””
The silence was brutal.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Three years?””
Claire nodded.
“I found out three years ago.””
Adrian laughed quietly.
“Three years.””
He looked around the underground room.
“My father was alive.””
“My childhood was stolen.””
“My family was destroyed.””
“And you knew.””
Claire wiped her face.
“I knew pieces.””
“Pieces?””
“Yes.””
“What pieces?””
She looked at the black ledger.
“The pieces that Victor Cole spent twenty years trying to erase.””
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
“You worked for Victor.””
“No.””
“Then why were you inside my company?””
Claire hesitated.
“Because I was trying to protect you.””
Adrian shook his head.
“Everyone says that.””
His voice became colder.
“Everyone.””
Claire stepped forward.
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds like another person telling me they lied for my own good.””
“I lied because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of what would happen if you remembered.””
Adrian stared.
“What does that mean?””
Claire looked at Ethan.
Then at Jonathan.
Then back at Adrian.
“Your mother didn't just hide the ledger.””
Adrian touched the compass.
“She hid something else.””
“Yes.””
“What?””
Claire took a breath.
“The truth about November 14.””
The tunnel became silent.
Ethan looked at her.
“What are you doing here?””
Claire looked at him.
“Finishing what Elena started.””
Adrian noticed the way Ethan reacted.
Not anger.
Recognition.
“You know her.””
Claire nodded.
“She knew my father.””
Everyone froze.
Adrian looked at her.
“Your father?””
Claire reached into her coat and pulled out an old envelope.
She handed it to Adrian.
The paper was worn.
The handwriting was familiar.
His mother's.
Adrian's hands shook.
“Where did you get this?””
“My father kept it.””
“Who was your father?””
Claire looked down.
“Thomas Vale.””
Jonathan went pale.
“No.””
Adrian looked at him.
“You know that name?””
Jonathan nodded slowly.
“He was one of us.””
“One of who?””
“Your father’s closest friends.””
Claire nodded.
“He helped Ethan investigate Victor.””
Adrian opened the envelope.
Inside was a single letter.
His mother's handwriting.
But the message wasn't addressed to him.
It was addressed to Thomas.
*If something happens to me, do not trust anyone inside Cole Meridian. Not Victor. Not Richard. Not even the person who claims to be protecting Daniel.*
Adrian stopped.
The words burned.
Not even the person who claims to be protecting Daniel.
He looked up.
“Who was she talking about?””
Nobody answered.
His eyes moved to Ethan.
Then Jonathan.
Then Claire.
“Who?””
Claire spoke quietly.
“She never wrote the name.””
Adrian looked back at the letter.
“She knew.””
“Yes.””
“She knew someone close to her betrayed her.””
“Yes.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Adrian.””
But Adrian raised a hand.
“No.””
He looked at Claire.
“What happened the night I disappeared?””
Claire's expression changed.
“Your mother sent me to find you.””
Adrian froze.
“What?””
“My father was already dead.””
Claire looked at the letter.
“He died trying to protect evidence.””
“When?””
“Two days before your disappearance.””
Adrian stared.
“How old were you?””
“Sixteen.””
The answer shocked him.
“You were a teenager.””
“Yes.””
“And my mother trusted you?””
“She trusted my father.””
Claire looked at the compass.
“And she trusted me enough to carry on his work.””
Adrian looked down.
“What work?””
“The truth.””
The tunnel lights flickered.
A distant sound echoed.
A vehicle above them.
Everyone looked up.
Marcus moved instantly.
“We need to leave.””
But Adrian didn't move.
“Not until I know.””
Ethan looked at him.
“Know what?””
“Why me?””
Nobody answered.
Adrian held up the compass.
“Why did everyone destroy their lives over this?””
Claire stepped closer.
“Because you weren't just the heir.””
“What was I?””
She looked at him.
“The witness.””
Adrian frowned.
“I was eight.””
“Yes.””
“You think I saw something?””
Claire nodded.
“You did.””
The memory came again.
The night.
The rain.
His mother crying.
His father shouting.
A man's voice.
A door opening.
A ring.
A heavy gold ring striking a table.
Adrian grabbed his head.
“I saw someone.””
Everyone went still.
“What?”” Ethan whispered.
“I saw someone.””
Adrian's breathing became uneven.
“Not Victor.””
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
He closed his eyes.
The memory pushed forward.
A room.
A desk.
A man standing.
The gold ring.
A voice.
The boy doesn't remember anything.
Another voice.
He will.
Adrian opened his eyes.
“He was afraid of me remembering.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Adrian looked at the compass.
“The man with the ring.””
Jonathan whispered:
“Alexander Crowe.””
Silence.
Adrian looked at him.
“You knew?””
Jonathan looked broken.
“I suspected.””
“Again.””
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“You always suspect.””
Jonathan accepted the anger.
“You're right.””
A sound interrupted them.
A metallic click.
Everyone turned.
The hidden entrance above opened.
A shadow appeared.
Then a voice.
“I'm impressed.””
Alexander Crowe stepped into the chamber.
Calm.
Untouched.
Like he belonged there.
Marcus raised his weapon.
Crowe smiled.
“Still predictable.””
Adrian stared.
“How did you find us?””
Crowe looked at Claire.
Adrian turned.
Claire's face changed.
Not guilt.
Pain.
Crowe continued:
“She didn't betray you.””
Everyone looked at him.
“She was trying to protect you.””
Adrian frowned.
“Then why is she here?””
“Because she knew you needed the truth.””
Crowe stepped down.
“Unfortunately, so did I.””
Ethan moved in front of Adrian.
Crowe laughed softly.
“Still playing the hero.””
“You don't get to speak about him.””
Crowe ignored him.
He looked at Adrian.
“You want answers.””
Adrian stared.
“Yes.””
“Then ask your father why he lied.””
Ethan's face tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
Crowe smiled.
“Ask him why he told you Victor betrayed you.””
Nobody moved.
Adrian looked at Ethan.
“What does he mean?””
Ethan stayed silent.
Crowe continued.
“Ask him why he never told you the full truth about your mother’s death.””
Adrian's heart sank.
“Dad.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
“I didn't want you to know.””
“Know what?””
Ethan looked at him.
The pain in his face was unmistakable.
“Your mother didn't die because of Richard Vane.””
Adrian froze.
“What?””
“She died because…”
Ethan's voice broke.
“Because she saved me.””
The chamber went silent.
Crowe smiled faintly.
“And now we finally reach the truth.””
Adrian looked at Ethan.
“What are you saying?””
Ethan whispered:
“The person who killed your mother wasn't Victor.””
A pause.
“It wasn't Richard.””
Another pause.
Adrian felt his heartbeat slow.
“Then who?””
Ethan looked directly at him.
And said the one name Adrian never expected.
“Your grandfather.””
Nobody spoke.
The compass around Adrian's neck suddenly clicked open by itself.
A tiny hidden compartment appeared.
Inside was a final piece of paper.
One sentence.
Written by Elena.
Adrian picked it up.
His hands trembled.
*Daniel, if you discover this message, it means your father finally told you the truth.*
He turned the paper over.
May you like
Only one more line remained.
*But remember this: Ethan Cole is not your biological father.*
