Chapter 6: The Night Everything Changed

The black sedan disappeared beyond the cemetery gates.

But Alexander Crowe's words remained.

*Your uncle didn't lose you twenty years ago.*

*He gave you away.*

Adrian stood frozen beside his mother's grave.

The rain began again.

Slowly at first.

Then heavier.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Marcus broke the silence.

“Adrian.””

He didn't answer.

His eyes remained on Jonathan.

The old man looked smaller than he had minutes ago.

Not like a dangerous man.

Not like someone hiding a secret.

Like someone who had been waiting twenty years for this moment and still wasn't ready.

“Tell me he’s lying.””

Jonathan closed his eyes.

“Daniel…”

“Tell me.””

The old man opened his eyes.

“I wish I could.””

Adrian felt something inside him crack.

“You wish you could?””

Jonathan looked away.

“That’s your answer?””

“No.””

“Then give me the truth.””

Jonathan slowly nodded.

“You deserve that.””

Marcus watched carefully.

Adrian folded his arms.

“Start with my father.””

Jonathan looked at Elena’s grave.

“The night Ethan died…”

His voice became quiet.

“I wasn't there when it happened.””

Adrian's expression hardened.

“Crowe said you were.””

“He lied.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew I would look guilty.””

“And are you?””

Jonathan looked directly at him.

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

Too quickly.

Adrian noticed.

“You're sure.””

“Yes.””

“Then where were you?””

Jonathan hesitated.

That hesitation hurt more than the answer.

“Jonathan.””

The old man swallowed.

“I was following Victor.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew he was planning something.””

“What?””

“A takeover.””

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“That's all?””

“No.””

Jonathan looked at him.

“He wasn't trying to take the company.””

He paused.

“He was trying to take you.””

The rain fell harder.

Adrian felt his hands tighten.

“Explain.””

“Your father discovered that Victor had been moving money through hidden accounts.””

“The ledger.””

“Yes.””

“He confronted him?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Jonathan looked down.

“Ethan called me that night.””

Adrian went still.

“He called you?””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

Jonathan's voice trembled.

“He said, ‘If anything happens to me, protect Daniel.’”

Adrian stared.

“What time?””

“11:43 p.m.””

“Where was he?””

“At the office.””

“Then why wasn't he saved?””

Jonathan looked away.

“Because I never made it there.””

“Why?””

The old man closed his eyes.

“Because someone stopped me.””

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Jonathan looked at him.

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

Adrian shook his head.

“You know things. You just don't tell me.””

Jonathan accepted the accusation.

Maybe because it was true.

“Someone attacked my car before I reached the office.””

“Who?””

“I only saw one person.””

“Who?””

Jonathan looked at him.

“Richard Vane.””

Adrian's breathing slowed.

“Then why did Crowe say you were involved?””

“Because Richard wanted me blamed.””

“For what?””

“For Ethan’s death.””

Adrian looked toward Marcus.

“Can we verify any of this?””

Marcus shook his head slightly.

“Not from here.””

Adrian turned back.

“What happened after?””

Jonathan took a deep breath.

“I went to the office the next morning.””

“And?””

“Ethan was gone.””

“Dead?””

Jonathan nodded.

“His body wasn't found for three days.””

Adrian frowned.

“Why?””

“Because Victor made sure the story was different.””

“What story?””

“That Ethan ran away.””

Adrian froze.

“My father abandoned me?””

“Yes.””

“That’s what they told me.””

Jonathan nodded.

“They wanted you to believe he left.””

“Why?””

“Because a child who hates his father doesn't search for him.””

Adrian felt a cold wave pass through him.

They hadn't only taken him.

They had shaped him.

Controlled what he believed.

Controlled what he remembered.

“Where was my mother?””

Jonathan looked toward the grave.

“She knew Ethan was in danger.””

“Did she know he died?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't she leave?””

“Because she believed she could expose them.””

“The ledger.””

“Yes.””

Adrian looked down at the compass.

“My mother hid evidence inside this.””

“Yes.””

“But you said she gave it to me.””

“She did.””

“Before she died?””

“Yes.””

“Why don't I remember?””

Jonathan's face softened.

“Because she erased it.””

Adrian stared.

“What?””

“She didn't erase your memory.””

“Then what?””

“She made sure you couldn't access it.””

“How?””

Jonathan reached toward the compass.

“Your mother was smart.””

Adrian almost smiled.

“That sounds like something everyone says after someone dies.””

“No.””

Jonathan shook his head.

“She knew Victor would try to get inside your head.””

“What does that mean?””

“She taught you a code.””

Adrian frowned.

“A code?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

“For the ledger.””

Adrian stared at the compass.

“My own memory is the key.””

Jonathan nodded.

“Your mother hid the instructions inside a childhood memory.””

Adrian looked frustrated.

“And I can't remember it.””

“You can.””

“No, I can't.””

“You can.””

Jonathan stepped closer.

“Think about the night she gave you the compass.””

Adrian looked away.

“I told you.””

“I don't remember.””

“Yes, you do.””

Jonathan's voice became gentle.

“You remember the feeling.””

Adrian said nothing.

“You remember her hands.””

A flicker.

“You remember the smell of rain.””

Another flicker.

“You remember her crying.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

The cemetery disappeared.

For a second, he wasn't forty years old.

He was eight.

A small room.

A broken window.

His mother kneeling in front of him.

Her hands shaking.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

A child's voice.

“Why are you crying, Mommy?””

“Because I need you to be brave.””

“I am brave.””

“I know.””

She smiled.

But she was terrified.

She placed the compass around his neck.

“Never give this to anyone.””

“Not even Daddy?””

His mother's face changed.

Especially not him.

The memory shattered.

Adrian opened his eyes.

His breathing was heavy.

“What?””

Jonathan stared.

“You remembered.””

Adrian touched the compass.

“She told me not to give it to my father.””

Jonathan went silent.

“Why?””

The old man's face changed.

“That wasn't what I expected.””

Adrian looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Jonathan didn't answer.

“Jonathan.””

The old man looked at him.

“Your mother trusted Ethan.””

“Then why?””

“I don't know.””

Adrian laughed quietly.

“You really don't?””

“No.””

Jonathan looked troubled.

“She must have discovered something.””

“About my father?””

“Maybe.””

“Or about you?””

Jonathan didn't respond.

That silence was enough.

Marcus stepped between them.

“Adrian.””

“What?””

“We need to leave.””

Adrian ignored him.

“Why didn't my mother trust you?””

Jonathan looked broken.

“Because I failed her.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the only one I have.””

Adrian turned away.

His phone buzzed.

Everyone froze.

Unknown number.

A video file.

He opened it.

The screen showed a room.

An old room.

A wooden chair.

A man sitting in darkness.

Adrian leaned closer.

The camera moved.

The man's face appeared.

Older.

Weak.

But recognizable.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Because he knew that face.

Not from photographs.

From memory.

A voice from his childhood.

A hand holding his.

A man saying:

I will always find you, Daniel.

His father.

Ethan Cole.

Alive.

The video began.

Ethan looked directly into the camera.

“Adrian.””

Adrian stepped backward.

The world stopped.

His father continued.

“If you are watching this, then they failed to keep you away from the truth.””

Adrian couldn't move.

Ethan looked exhausted.

Afraid.

“But there is something you need to know before you trust anyone.””

The video flickered.

Then Ethan spoke the words that changed everything.

“Your uncle Jonathan is not the man who betrayed you.””

Jonathan looked up.

Hope flashed across his face.

Then Ethan continued.

“The person who betrayed you is the one person you would never suspect.””

The screen went black.

A final message appeared.

*The next recording is hidden where you were born.*

Adrian stared.

Marcus looked at him.

“Where were you born?””

Adrian slowly turned toward Jonathan.

The old man looked terrified.

Because he already knew the answer.

“The Hart house.””

Adrian frowned.

“The house that burned down?””

Jonathan nodded.

“No.””

His voice barely existed.

“The house never burned.””

Adrian felt the ground shift beneath him.

“Then what happened to it?””

Jonathan looked at the compass.

And whispered:

“They made sure nobody would ever find what was underneath it.””

A new message appeared on Adrian's phone.

One sentence.

May you like

From the same unknown number.

*Come alone, or your father dies.*
