Chapter 8: The Father Behind the Lie

For twenty years, Adrian had heard that voice every morning.

Good morning, son.

You did well today.

I'm proud of you.

Words that had shaped him.

Words that had built him.

Words that now felt like weapons.

Victor Cole stood on the other side of the hidden door.

The man who taught Adrian how to tie his first tie.

The man who sat beside him after nightmares.

The man who told him his biological parents were gone.

The man who built an empire on a lie.

Adrian stared at the door.

Nobody spoke.

Then Victor knocked.

Three slow knocks.

The same way he used to knock on Adrian's bedroom door when he was a child.

A familiar sound.

A painful sound.

“Adrian.””

Victor's voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

“Open the door.””

Adrian looked at Ethan.

His biological father stood silently.

Waiting.

Not telling him what to do.

For the first time in his life, Adrian noticed that.

Ethan didn't demand.

Didn't manipulate.

Didn't pressure.

He simply waited.

Victor spoke again.

“I know you're confused.””

Adrian laughed quietly.

“Confused?””

His voice shook.

“You lied to me for twenty years.””

A pause.

Then Victor answered.

“I protected you.””

Ethan's expression darkened.

Adrian noticed.

“Protected me from what?””

Silence.

Victor didn't answer immediately.

That was the first crack.

The first time Adrian heard hesitation in his voice.

“Adrian.””

“No.””

Adrian stepped closer to the door.

“You don't get to call me that like nothing happened.””

Victor sighed.

“I know what this looks like.””

“It looks like you stole my life.””

“That is not what happened.””

“Then explain.””

Another silence.

Finally, Victor said:

“Open the door.””

“No.””

“Son.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

That word.

Son.

It had always meant safety.

Now it felt like a chain.

“You are not my father.””

The words came out softly.

But they hurt more than anger.

Victor went quiet.

Then:

“I know.””

Everyone froze.

Adrian looked at the door.

“What did you say?””

Victor's voice became lower.

“I know I am not your biological father.””

Ethan looked away.

Marcus stared at Adrian.

Adrian felt the room shift.

“You admit it?””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

Victor answered immediately.

“Because someone had to raise you.””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Ethan.

“Someone did.””

Victor's voice sharpened slightly.

“You don't know what he did.””

Ethan stepped closer to the door.

“Don't.””

Victor laughed.

A cold sound.

“Still protecting him?””

Adrian looked at Ethan.

“What does he mean?””

Ethan said nothing.

That scared Adrian more than anything.

“Everyone keeps hiding things from me.””

He looked between them.

“My whole life has been secrets.””

His voice rose.

“I want the truth.””

The room went silent.

Then Ethan spoke.

“Your mother was right.””

Adrian looked at him.

“About what?””

“About everyone having a version of the truth.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“Victor’s version.””

He looked toward the door.

“Mine.””

Then he looked at Adrian.

“And the truth itself.””

Victor interrupted.

“Don't listen to him.””

Adrian turned toward the door.

“Why?””

“Because he left you.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

The words hit.

Adrian noticed.

Victor continued.

“He disappeared when you needed him.””

Adrian looked at Ethan.

“Did you?””

Ethan didn't answer immediately.

Finally:

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised him.

Adrian's face hardened.

“Why?””

Ethan looked down.

“Because I was trying to save you.””

“By abandoning me?””

“By keeping you alive.””

Adrian shook his head.

“You all say that.””

He pointed toward the door.

“You say you protected me.””

He pointed toward Ethan.

“You say you sacrificed yourself.””

He looked at Jonathan.

“You say you failed.””

His voice broke slightly.

“But nobody ever asked what I wanted.””

Nobody responded.

Because they knew he was right.

Then the door handle moved.

Victor was trying to open it.

Marcus immediately checked the lock.

“They sealed it.””

“How long?”” Adrian asked.

“Not long.””

“How do we get out?””

Marcus looked around.

“Another exit?””

Ethan nodded.

“Behind the shelves.””

Adrian turned.

“You knew about this?””

“Yes.””

“And you brought me here?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Ethan looked at him.

“Because it was the only place Victor couldn't control.””

Adrian walked toward the shelves.

Behind them was another door.

Older.

Wooden.

Locked.

Ethan pulled a small key from his pocket.

Adrian stared.

“Where did you get that?””

“Your mother gave it to me.””

“When?””

“Before she died.””

Adrian stopped.

“You were with her?””

Ethan looked down.

“Yes.””

“On November 14?””

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Adrian stepped closer.

“My mother died that night.””

“Yes.””

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did everyone say you were dead?””

Ethan looked at him.

“Because I was supposed to be.””

The answer was terrifying.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan unlocked the door.

“It means Richard Vane tried to kill both of us.””

The door opened.

A narrow tunnel stretched into darkness.

But Adrian didn't move.

“Wait.””

Ethan looked back.

“What?””

“I need to know.””

“Know what?””

“The night she died.””

Ethan's expression changed.

Pain.

Deep and old.

“She didn't die because of the accident.””

Adrian froze.

“What?””

“It wasn't an accident.””

Jonathan lowered his head.

He already knew.

Adrian looked at him.

“You knew?””

Jonathan whispered:

“I suspected.””

Adrian turned back to Ethan.

“Who killed her?””

Ethan looked toward the locked door.

Then back at his son.

“Richard Vane.””

The name echoed.

“And Victor?””

Ethan's silence answered.

Adrian's chest tightened.

“No.””

Ethan didn't look away.

“Victor didn't pull the trigger.””

“But he knew.””

“Yes.””

The room felt colder.

“Why?””

Ethan's voice cracked.

“Because Victor believed your mother was going to expose everything.””

Adrian stared.

“And you?””

“I tried to stop him.””

“Then why didn't you save her?””

Ethan looked away.

Because the answer hurt.

“Because I chose you.””

Adrian stopped.

Ethan continued.

“I had one chance.””

His voice broke.

“Your mother was trapped.””

A pause.

“You were outside.””

Adrian's breathing changed.

“You chose me.””

“Yes.””

“You left her.””

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.””

The truth hurt.

But it was different.

It wasn't a lie.

It was a wound.

A real one.

Adrian looked away.

He didn't know whether to hate him.

He didn't know whether to forgive him.

He only knew he had spent twenty years mourning a man who had been alive.

And now he was standing in front of him.

A stranger.

His father.

A stranger.

A loud crash came from behind the hidden door.

Victor.

The lock was breaking.

Marcus looked toward the sound.

“We need to move.””

Ethan nodded.

They entered the tunnel.

The passage smelled like dirt and old stone.

As they walked, Adrian noticed marks carved into the walls.

Letters.

Numbers.

Dates.

“What are these?””

Ethan looked.

“Your mother’s system.””

“For what?””

“She recorded everything.””

Adrian touched one marking.

A small triangle.

“What does this mean?””

Ethan stopped.

His face changed.

“That wasn't hers.””

Adrian looked at him.

“What?””

Ethan pointed.

The symbol had been carved deeper.

Recently.

Someone had added something.

Below it were three words.

*HE IS LYING.*

Marcus looked around.

“Who wrote that?””

Nobody answered.

Then Adrian heard something.

A sound behind them.

Footsteps.

Someone was following.

Ethan turned.

“Run.””

They moved faster.

The tunnel opened into a small underground chamber.

At the center was a metal box.

Adrian stared.

“What is that?””

Ethan walked toward it.

“The reason everyone wanted you.””

He opened it.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

A small black ledger.

Adrian reached for it.

Then stopped.

Because on top of the ledger was a photograph.

A recent one.

Not twenty years old.

Recent.

It showed Adrian.

Standing outside Cole Meridian headquarters.

And beside him—

Someone he knew.

Someone he trusted.

Claire.

His assistant.

Adrian stared.

“No.””

Ethan looked at him.

“What?””

Adrian picked up the photograph.

“When was this taken?””

Ethan checked the date.

His expression changed.

“Yesterday.””

Adrian's phone suddenly vibrated.

A message.

From Claire.

*I'm sorry you had to find out this way.*

Another message appeared.

*Your father told you I was the enemy.*

Then a third.

*He never told you what happened the night you were taken.*

Adrian stared at the screen.

The tunnel lights flickered.

And from somewhere behind them…

A woman's voice whispered:

“Adrian.””

He turned.

Claire stepped out of the darkness.

May you like

Her eyes were full of tears.

“I can explain.””
