Chapter 10 - MY MOTHER'S CONFESSION

My mother came to see me that evening.
She looked exhausted.
“I owe you the truth.”
I sat beside her.
“I already know about Lucas.”
She smiled sadly.
“I thought you did.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Your father asked me not to.”
“Why?”
“Because your grandfather was watching.”
She explained everything.
When my father discovered Lucas existed, he wanted to bring him home.
My grandfather threatened Natalie.
Then Natalie died.
My father believed she had been killed.
He sent Lucas away.
He hid him.
He protected him.
Then my father staged his own disappearance after discovering the larger conspiracy.
My mother helped him.
She became the person everyone blamed.
She allowed people to think she was greedy.
Cold.
Secretive.
Because she believed it would keep me alive.
I looked at her.
“You should have trusted me.”
“I know.”
“I could have helped.”
“You were young.”
“I wasn't a child forever.”
She cried.
“I was afraid.”
I hugged her.
“I forgive you.”
She pulled back.
“You do?”
“Yes.”
“But you don't forget.”
“No.”
She smiled through her tears.
“Your father would have been proud.”
May you like
I looked toward the window.
“I hope so.”
